As we celebrate Halloween and all the cultural chal-lenges that it represents for the faith of many, I want to share with you an excerpt from a blog by Fr. Steve Grunow entitled “It’s time for Catholics to embrace Hal-loween.” Please find the full text on wordonfire.com of which Fr. Steve is the CEO. Also, find the link on our Facebook page. Remember that Halloween is the result of the deformation of the words “All hallows eve.” QUESTION: I read somewhere that Halloween is seen as the day when the veil between heaven and earth and purgatory is thinnest, hence the presence of souls. That seems like some seriously “new agey” stuff. Is this a Catholic thing or is that where Wiccans and imaginative Hollywood types step in?

Fr. Steve: I don’t know precisely the metaphysical precedents that one would use to justify the belief that there are on specific days thicker and thinner veils be-tween the natural and supernatural realms. It seems eso-teric and speculative.

I do think that the reality that such a perspective rep-resents has great power as a narrative that explains for some folks how they think that the natural and the super-natural interact with one another. Is it true? I don’t know how one would adjudicate such a claim definitively. As such, it remains a supposition or a possibility.

The Catholic Faith describes natural and supernatu-ral realities existing in a relationship of communion or co-inherence that is called sacramental. This means that because of the Incarnation of God in Christ, natural real-ities can express supernatural realities. Physical realities can truly be bearers of divine grace.

The divine grace that is revealed in the Church’s commemoration of Halloween should be our participa-tion in what is called the Communion of Saints. This Communion of Saints means that this world is not all that there is and that those who have passed through the experience of death continue to love us, care for us and even through God’s permissive will, can interact with us. It also means that that the Christian can hope that God’s power in Christ to save and redeem extends be-yond this world to the next and as such we can hope that few of us will be lost causes. The festivities of Hallow-een should affirm that these beliefs about the Commun-ion of Saints are real and are also the deepest reality of what this world has become because of the revelation of God in Christ.

Recuerden, Halloween es el resultado de la deformación de las palabras “All hallows eve” que significa la víspera de todos los santos. Pregunta: Lei en algún lugar que Halloween es entendido como el día en que el velo entre el cielo, el infierno y el pur-gatorio es mas delgado, y por eso la presencia de las almas. Esto suena como algo de la “Nueva Era”. Eso esto algo cató-lico o solo para el estilo de la imaginación de Hollywood?

Padre Steve: No tengo conocimiento de los precedentes metafísicos que uno puede usar para justificar la creencia de que existen, en determinados días, velos delgados o gruesos entre lo natural y lo supernatural. Me parece esotérico y espe-culativo.

Creo que la realidad que esta perspectiva representa tiene gran poder como narrativa que explica para ciertas personas la forma en que piensan que lo natural y lo supernatural interac-túan. ¿Es cierto esto? No se como se puede hacer un juicio definitivo. Termina siendo una mera suposición o una posibi-lidad.

La fe católica nos dice que la realidad natural y la super-natural existen en una relación de comunión o co-inherencia que se le llama sacramental. Esto significa que a causa de la encamación de Dios en Cristo, realidades naturales expresan realidades supernaturales. Realidades físicas pueden ser ver-daderas portadoras de gracia divina.

La gracia divina que es revelada en la conmemoración de Halloween en la iglesia debe ser nuestra participación en lo que se llama la Comunión de los Santos. La Comunión de los Santos significa que este mundo no es lo único que existe y que los que han pasado a través de la experiencia de muerte continúan amándonos y preocupándose por nosotros, e inclu-so con la voluntad permisiva de Dios, pueden interactuar con nosotros. También significa que el Cristiano puede esperar que el poder de Dios para salvar y redimir en Cristo se extien-de mas allá de este mundo al siguiente de tal modo que espe-ramos que pocos de nosotros seremos causas perdidas. Las festividades de Halloween deben afirmar que las creencias acerca de la comunión de los santos son reales y también que los las realidades mas profundas de lo que este mundo se ha convertido gracias a la revelación de Dios en Cristo.

Annual Knights of Columbus Vocations Support Drive

The Knights of Columbus Council will be selling vocations raffle tickets before and after all masses on the weekends of November 7-8 and 14-15. Our goal is to sell at least100 books. All proceeds will be used to support seminarians through local and state donations.

Each year your Council provides multiple $500 stipends to third-year seminarians at Mundelein Seminary to help defray their expenses. These individuals are studying to become priests in your archdiocese. The State Council also forwards monies to various seminarians throughout the state.

Your donations are greatly appreciated and you will have a chance to win one of 20 cash prizes. Individual tickets are $1 and you can purchase a book for $15. Please be generous. Bring return address labels to expedite the process.
