Remembering those who served

By Gordon Moore

Once again Remem-brance Day will soon be upon us. A time for Canadians of all ages to remember the more than one hundred thou-sand fellow citizens who fought, bled and died protecting our freedoms along with the countless others who have served our country.

But Remembrance Day should not only be

reserved to remember those who made the ulti-mate sacrifi ce. It should also be a practical re-membrance of the living – the disabled Veterans, RCMP members, wid-ows, widowers, orphans and family members of those who served who are in need of a helping hand.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion are, as one of their core respon-sibilities, the Guardians

of Remembrance. The Poppy Campaign orga-nized by the Legion, in conjunction with Re-membrance Day, helps alleviate suffering and addresses the needs of Veterans and their fami-lies who may not have the fi nancial wherewith-al for basic necessities.

The Legion assists with purchasing medi-cal equipment, awarding bursaries for needy stu-dents, providing support services such as meals-on-wheels and drop-in centres and helping with some basic residential repairs to name but a few.

So much of the Le-gion’s work in our communities goes un-noticed. Every day this organization of more than 330,000 people makes signifi cant contri-butions, not only to en-hance the lives of Veter-ans, but also for seniors, Cadets, Scouts, Guides, as well as serving mem-bers of the Canadian Forces and RCMP and their families.

The Legion remains fi ercely proud to be

Canada’s largest Vet-erans services organi-zation. Our advocacy work on behalf of all who have served in the Canadian Forces and RCMP ensures that they receive life-long sup-port and recognition for their service to this country. Thanks to their desire to give back, the Legion was created and continues to this day to support our communi-ties in countless ways. The Royal Canadian Le-gion’s Poppy Campaign provides everyone with the opportunity for prac-tical remembrance and it is hoped that this year, with the recent con-fl icts in Afghanistan and Libya as with our aging Second World War and Korean Veterans, more Canadians will wear the Poppy than ever before.

There’s more to the Legion than you might think. We Care! Find out today how you can get involved by visit-ing your local Legion branch…because you care; because you can.

Lest We Forget,

PHOT0 SUBMITTED

Gordon Moore, Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Legion.

A time for all Canadians to remember

Lest We Forget

The news is spread far and wideAnother comrade has sadly died

A sunset vigil upon the sandAs a soldier leaves this foreign land

We stand alone, and yet as oneIn the fading light of a setting sunWe’ve all gathered to say goodbye

To our fallen comrade who’s set to y

The eulogy’s read about their lifeSometimes with words from pals or wife

We all know when the CO’s doneWhat kind of soldier they’d become

The padre then calls us all to prayThe bugler has Last Post to play

The cannon roars and belches ameWe will recall, with pride, their name

A minute’s silence stood in placeAs tears roll down the hardest face

deafening silence lls the airWith each of us in personal prayer

Reveille sounds and the parade is doneThe hero remembered, forgotten by none

They leave to start the journey backIn a co n draped in the Union Jack

Sgt Andy McFarlane, 2009.

Private Bill Nowell joined up in Edmonton with the 49th Loyal Edmonton Infantry Battalion in 1940 and was shipped over to England, North Africa, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany in Captain Asher Hamer's platoon in A-Company. Bill saw his worst fighting around Christmas 1943 at Campobasse and Ortona, along the East coast of Italy. Ortona was close-quarter house to house fighting where you had to use your boots and bayonets on the Germans. The Germans paratroopers had Ortona mined and booby-trapped with snipers hidden everywhere, dropping grenades down on the Canadians advancing in the open streets. The German mines took out three Sherman tanks in the first hour—the infantry was on it’s own. The Loyal Eddies weren’t dumb enough to go down the one remaining street the Germans had left invitingly open. Instead they ended up blasting their way through the walls on one end of a row of houses, fighting to the top floor, and blasting through each separating wall, working their way along the rows of houses, one at a time, chucking in grenades as they went. A lot of Eddies got killed but they captured the town. (Today in Ortona there's a graveyard memorial there marked with a Sherman Tank. There's a lot of Loyal Eddies in it). Bill made it through the war with a few scars, some shrapnel in the neck, and food poisoning from the awful army food. He brought his bride Nora back from England in 1946 and lived in Cranbrook until his heart attack in 1993. The photo shows Bill and his buddy Glen Hyland taken in Rome in 1944.

Dear Papa,I wanted to send you a letter to express to you how grateful I am to have you in my life. I never new until now how much of a hero you are and always will be. I always had questions but the video you shared with us could not have said it more. You don't have to say more than two words for us to understand what you went through and I just wanted to thank you for all of our freedom. People don't often talk about it any more and my generation has no clue what you went through for your family and our country. I want to promise you my kids will know and remember. None of us can comprehend the heartbreak and pride that will never leave you. I am proud to be your granddaughter and thank you for our freedom I will not let anyone forget.Kelly

Wear a poppy with pride.

In Flanders Fields In Flanders fi elds the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fl y Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fi elds.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fi elds.

Are hearing aids right for me?Discovering that you have a hearing loss and realizing that you may need to get hearing aids can be a confusing and stressful experience. Where to go, what to do, and how long will it take are all questions that can arise. However, the nega-tive impact of this experience can be minimized if the right hearing healthcare professional is involved in the process.Approximately 10% of Canadians live with a hearing loss, but most do not seek professional help or treatment. This number is roughly equivalent to the popula-tion of Toronto and Vancouver combined! Although most hearing problems are associated with age, over half of all hearing impaired persons are under the age of 65 years. Hearing difficulties can be ‘invisible’ to the person involved. Most adults lose their hearing gradually and don’t realize that it is happening or the impact it has on their daily lives or how it is experienced by family members and friends. The symptoms of hearing loss may include any or all of the following signs:• Asking people to repeat often• Being able to hear, but not understand• Not being able to follow conversations• Difficulty hearing in background noise• Feelings of depression, anxiety or isolation• Strained personal and family relationships • Undue fatigue and stress• Avoidance of social situationsThere are many barriers to treatment and reasons why people do not seek help for their hearing loss. Often there are concerns about cost or a lack of knowledge about the true benefits of hearing aid technology. For some people, the perception of a negative stigma associated with hearing loss and or the cosmetic aspect pre-vent them from wearing hearing aids. Finally, in many cases there is considerable avoidance of confronting the issue and it can take several years for the person to be ready to do something about the hearing loss.

Do I even need hearing aids? The first step in pursuing hearing aids is to have a full diagnostic hearing test by an Audiologist to determine if a hearing loss is present. This testing will indicate what kind of hearing loss is present. The most common type of hearing loss is ‘nerve deafness’ or sensorineural hearing loss which is not medically treatable. If you have this type of hearing loss, your Audiologist will discuss amplification with you in the form of hearing aids or other assistive listening devices based on both the degree of loss and your specific needs. If there is a history of noise exposure through work or military experience, then your Audiologist will initiate a WCB or Veteran’s claim. There are a several types of hearing loss that can be treated

medically, and it is important that they be treated first, before you get hearing aids. If you do not have a hearing loss, or decide that you are not ready for hearing aids yet, there is no pressure put upon you. To wear hearing aids successfully, you must first be mentally prepared.

So, I have a hearing loss and want to get hearing aids…If the testing shows that you do have a hearing loss and you want to get the pro-cess started, then your Audiologist will go over a range of options. Based on your hearing loss and more importantly, your specific hearing needs, a number of dif-ferent options will be highlighted as well as the benefits and drawbacks for each. Advanced digital technology today has provided major breakthroughs in both style and quality of sound and has improved the lives of those who wear hearing aids. From the reduction of background noise to improvements in clarity of speech, hearing aids are becoming recognized as the most viable solution to improving the quality of life for those over the age of 65. Hearing aid styles vary, and not all are created equal. ‘Open fit’ hearing aids are the most discreet and natural sounding options available and can be fit on most people successfully. Open fit hearing aids eliminate the ‘head in a barrel’ sensation and are so comfortable that most users forget they are wearing hearing aids. Appropriately fit and programmed hearing aids or assistive listening devices can make a significant difference for those living with a hearing loss. With today’s technology, wearers report a significant improvement in their ability to hear in almost every situation. The most apparent benefits of wearing hearing aids are to be able to hear family and friends again, improved relationships, and a much more positive outlook on life including greater self-confidence. A knowledgeable hearing healthcare professional, or Audiologist, can provide you with the best that technology can offer based on your specific hearing needs. Critically, not everyone presents with the same needs, so it is important to focus on the precise listening situations and tailor make the solution that is right for each individual. Come with your questions—that helps us to determine the best hearing aids for you. We also recommend that you come with a familiar voice (spouse, child, friend, etc.) to assist in a practical demonstration of current hearing aid technology. If you decide to get hearing aids, the process has just begun. It can take several weeks to get used to new hearing aids, so close contact and follow up with your Audiologist is important to ensure success. We hope that this information proves helpful to you. If you have any questions, and are interested in taking the first step towards better hearing, please call us at 877-426-0079 or visit us in the Tamarack mall in Cranbrook, or at the Rocky Moun-tain Health Centre in Fernie. Our goal is quality hearing… for life!

I am located at Camp KAIA-N, essentially on the north side of Kabul International Airport. We are a group of 11 Canadians embedded with a US Air Force unit called the 738th AEAS (Air Expedition-ary Advisory Squad-ron). I am the OIC (Officer in Charge) of Student Squadron at PeH. PeH stands for Pohantoon e Hawayee,

basically “Afghan Air Force University.” My specific job is to advise an Afghan LCol (Lieu-tenant Colonel) and his three Company Com-manders who provide support to a current student body of ap-proximately 500, and a plan to increase that number to over 1200 by the end of 2013. This is the primary training location for the Afghan

Air Force before they are posted out to opera-tional units around the country.
