Introducing the Novell® File Management Suite• The Novell File Management Suite is a solution to the

universal pain of growing data storage costs and chaos. NFMS helps organizations intelligently manage their data resources based on identity driven policies, using three major Novell technologies:1. Novell Storage Manager

> Automated storage policies that can be connected to user identity and source-specific data

2. Novell File Reporter> Comprehensive file discovery and reporting capabilities applied to users and

groups

3. Novell Dynamic File Services for Windows Servers> Auto tiering of data to less expensive storage areas, without degrading the user

experience> Support for Windows Server 2003 / 2008 and Microsoft Active Directory

File Management Suite Differentiators

• Until now, organizations have had to manage files the same but not every file has the same value to the organizations.

• Now, with Novell® File Management Suite, organizations can manage their file storage intelligently: the least important files don't need to be treated the same as the most important files

• Unique characteristics unique to Novell File Management Suite include:– Identity Foundation – Automates the management of file-based storage using

identity-based policies– Granularity – Addresses data storage challenges at the file (and not simply the block

or volume) level– Transparency – Streamlines storage practices without impacting the end user– Interoperability – Works across Linux, Windows and NetWare®, helping customers

manage the their Novell and Microsoft storage infrastructure from a single point– Scalability – capable of handling upwards of 80 million files in disparate file systems

across multiple platforms

Novell FileReporter

Novell File Reporter produces storage inventory reports that the administrator can use to initially construct and later fine-tune policies in Dynamic File Services and Storage Manager.

File Reporter policies govern life-cycle automation and compliance with regard to file system data.

Novell Dynamic File Services allows seamless tiering of storage infrastructures based on policy.

Business Benefits

• Understand your data better (aka Know Thyself)

• Enhance your existing file management with easy implementation and administration, even in mixed environments

• Automate your data storage administration in today’s regulated business environment

• Control your data by its relevance to your business

• Unlock hidden value that’s buried deep in file systems to enable collaboration

Use Case 1: Unchecked Data Proliferation

Over time, it is very typical for file systems to be ignored despite other architectural redesigns to accommodate an organization's growth. A large organization (LE) is likely to still maintain one huge volume for all its file storage. Typically an organization will add 10% of its storage capacity each year through disk purchases. The ability to eliminate that annual purchase by merely understanding the data picture better, and intelligently allocating existing hardware resources will result in immediate (year 1) savings.

Use Case 2: Security and Compliance Requirements

In distributed environments, file storage is often granted and managed based on local administration, not centralized policies. This creates problems for security and compliance officers who must demonstrate consistency and logic to meet business requirements. Being able to centrally compile, analyze, plan and execute data retention policies will be a very valuable capability for many organizations under regulatory pressure.

Use Case 3: Data Migration

When data must be migrated for hardware refreshes, software upgrades or migrations, or other reasons, there are costly and inconvenient administration challenges, such as scheduling windows within which to move the data. Employing a storage management solution that can actually migrate data in the background without requiring a scheduled maintenance window would be a huge benefit to business and IT.

Use Case 4: Rapid Headcount Turnover

Case Study 1– A regional bank with 230 offices and 5000 users

used to take up to 5 days to provision a new employee with file storage. With Novell® Storage Manager, that set up was reduced to under one day. Although turnover at the company is insignificant, employees do relocate to different branches and into new roles. NSM was able to simplify migration of user data and storage through policy-driven actions associated with the user's identity.

Use Case 4: Rapid Headcount Turnover

Case Study 2– A large Texas school system ascertained they

were spending $5 to set up a new user and $2 for every change to the system. After deploying Novell Storage Manager, the cost to deploy a new user dropped to under $1.

Use Case 4: Rapid Headcount Turnover

Case Study 3– The Data Center of today is increasingly virtualized

and intelligent, allowing for automation to drive efficiencies in hardware, power and cooling. Data Center owners are planning to utilize cloud computing for further efficiencies. A suite of policy-driven file management tools can support the intelligent data center.
