● ArcMaDe - Development of Novel Material for Arctic Oil Skimmers
● Joint need is focused into mechanical oil combating
● Brush recovery unit need to be checked against Arctic environment
and especially major oil types transported in the Arctic
● Finland has best mechanical systems available in the world – thus
confirming certain performance criteria better sales can be made
● Focus is also paid for the upgrading the Finnish brush technology to
get more international customers and manufacturing processes to
Finland

● Mechanical oil recovery is perhaps
the most advanced principle for oil
combatting in the Arctic
● Mechanical recovery fleet is using
brush type skimmer technology
● There are numerous mechanical
recovery solutions based on brush
type solutions
● Most advanced brush type
solutions are designed and made
in Finland

● Typical mechanical recovery units for
ice conditions are for example:
○ Rope Mop skimmers,
○ Arctic skimmer (Lamor Ltd)
○ Polar Bear skimmer
○ Polaris Ice skimmer
○ Lori Ice Cleaner
○ Oil Ice Separator, LOIS
○ Oil recovery bucket

● Even it seems the brush skimmer solution
is one of the most advanced type of
mechanical recovery options certain
problems exist such as:
○ Brush material vs. oil type – certain
bristles are nor valid for certain oil
types. Please, note diesel oil, light oil;
○ Even the raw material of certain
bristle type is the same, the lifting
capacity seems vary a lot for certain
type of oils ?
○ Lifting capacity for a set of oil types is
unknown and not tested scientifically;
○ Effect of ambient temperature is
unknown for lifting capacity, again
no data made based on scientific
analyses.
Length 2000 mm; diameter 1800 mm
● Optimizing brushes for:
○ Selected oil types
○ Wide temperature range
○ Arctic environment
○ Robust supply/icebreaker type platforms
● Looking solutions for:
○ Resistance for abrasion
○ Mechanical durability
○ In ice conditions
○ Protection of bristles against ice
○ Optimizing recovery results

R&D Needs – New Approach
Tasks:
● T0: Project Management
● T1: State-of-the-art in the bristle R&D
with focus in arctic conditions
● T2: Performance of commercial and in-
house products and potential to enhance
oil recovery properties of brush fibers
● T3 & T4: Laboratory and macro scale
test trials of selected commercial and in-
house bristle types with selected oil
types
● T5: Full scale testing of bristle
performance
● T6: Dissemination
