BARRY SCHWARTZ WINS 2011 EDWARD P. DAY

    CITIZENSHIP AWARD

Our Dunn Loring Woods Civic Association (DLWCA) is proud torecognize Mr. Barry Schwartz as this years recipient of the Edward P. Day Citizenship (EPD) Award for

2011. This annual award is given to a Dunn Loring Woods resident that has exemplified attributes of

leadership, model citizenship and volunteerism, contributing in a significant manner to the DLW

community. After reviewing several nominations this year, Mr. Schwartz was chosen for his outstanding

service to Dunn Loring Woods, which includes work on the Dunn Loring Woods Swim Club, charitable

time assisting the elderly and his ongoing instruction for adults in English as a Second Language.

Mr. Schwartz has been a resident of the Dunn Loring Woods neighborhood since 2003. He, his wife Jen

and daughter Geena moved into their current house in 2003. In 2005, his son Ethan was born and they

purchased a new home across the street. As the storage needs expand, so must the house.

Mr. Schwartz has made his living doing residential real estate development in the Maryland suburbs and

has owned his own company for the past nine years. He was a volunteer firefighter in Pennsylvania and

Montgomery County, Maryland, for about eight years during and after College. He enjoys home

renovation projects, fishing, riding and skiing with the kids. He has always been better at offering help

than asking for it, and enjoys helping friends and neighbors with things that they know little about or are

unable to move, cut or fix themselves. Shortly after moving in he helped find contractors for work on the

boy scout pavilion project at the pool and later that year pitched in on the Witman/Reinhart volunteer

repairs to the pool pump house roofs. His contributions led to being pulled onto the pool board for three

years. He has been keeping roads plowed during the winter storms and pushes open the occasiona

driveway plowed shut by the pros.

He is always ready to lend a helping hand for various other DLW residents, often from the google group

emails, for waterproofing or drainage problems, firewood supply, tree and branch removal, wiring

problems (from the google groups emails), plumbing projects, computer repairs, squirrel trapping

(unsuccessfully...), clearing fallen phone lines. He also enjoyed trying to share his time fishing and

playing on the Potomac with many of our neighbors and their kids.

His main support to our community has always been to help as "pitching in" where he can. His wife who

should get the award for putting up with the familiar, "I just gotta run and help a friend/neighbor a few

    minutes!

    CONGRATULATIONS, BARRY!*****************************************************************************************

    NEW AMANDA PLACE DEVELOPMENT

Development of the property on the north side of

Amanda Place near Cedar Lane, or what used to

be one of the parking areas for the Korean

Central Presbyterian Church, was approved by

the County awhile ago. You may recall that

some public meetings were previously held on

this matter. Construction of homes on that

property is now scheduled to begin in the near

future. There is planned to be a tree buffer

between adjacent DLW residences and the new

homes, and, a new storm water management

system is to be installed. The tree-save and

storm water management areas have been

marked by white plastic. DLW residents and

others have established informal walking trailsthrough the woods that are now on the property.

This has essentially been trespassing on the

property but the developer has not objected to

any degree, to date. However, with preparation

for construction and actual construction to begin

soon, DLW residents and others should avoid

being on this property both for their own safety

and so as to not disturb the markings for the

tree-save and storm water management areas

and other construction activities. DLW residents

who live in close proximity to the newdevelopment will be contacted re: the

construction time line and other pertinent

    information related to development construction,

as well as be provided a contact for questions

and concerns that arise during the construction

    period.

    Correction

In the list of families participating in placing flags

on July 4, the name of Brian Kennealy wasmisspelled. We apologize for any confusion.

PLEASE NOTE: The recent Lantern is dated

December 2011/January 2012. It should have

    been dated November/December 2011.

    HELP WANTED - Snow

    Removal

    If you have

    a snow plow

    and are interested in

    helping Dunn Loring Woods

    residents with snow removal,

    plowing, shoveling, etc, please

    contact Melvin Rose at 703-573-

    2076.

    FALL NEIGHBORHOOD TIPS

    1. Late-blooming trees and shrubs may be

    pruned now.

    2. Fertilize trees and shrubs just before the

    ground freezes.

    3. Do not mulch too close to the stem or trunks of

plants and trees. And don't pile mulch up against

stems and trunks. 2" of mulch is adequate.

    4. Before winter, mow your lawn lower than

normal, to about 1-1/2" to 2", and, if you edge

your lawn at this time, it will remain neat

throughout the winter. Before you store your

mower for the winter, run the engine until it is

    completely out of fuel.

    5. Just a reminder that you must bag

all those leaves in your yard. We do

not have curb side pick-up like they

do in the town of Vienna. Never park

your car on top of a pile of leaves.

    6. Please clean up after your pets.

The Dunn Loring Woods Board ofDirectors would like to extend wishes toeveryone for a safe, happy holiday. Our next Lantern newsletter will be in2012.
