AVAILABLE ON

16TH OCTOBER

End of an era!! A very pleasant afternoon was spent at

of committee members and group leaders.

A chance to thank Ann for her 4 years as

Chair and Pat’s 6 years in various roles.

Greetings from your new chair

It will be a hard act to follow Ann.

But I shall try my hardest. I have

only been a member for a year.

Due to wood carving with 3 chaps

every Wednesday afternoon.

I am a working artist, yes I still

paint and carve, and love life.

xxxxxxxxxxx

Goodbye to you all from the front

of house and thank you all for

being kind when I made mistakes.

In my Annual Report I said what I

felt about my 4 years as Chairman

of Eastleigh District U3A so I will

not repeat it here. For those who

may not have been at the AGM it

can be read on our website. That

is if you think it worthwhile!

A big welcome to xxxxxx our new

chairman. I hope you will be as

kind to her as you were to me. I

also welcome xxxxx who has

valiantly volunteered to be our

new Secretary and two new

members to the Committee, xxxx

xxxxxx and xxxxxxxx and full

house for the team.

I expect to be around, lending my

support in what ever capacity I

can be of use and I hope in due

course to try out a few more of

our group activities.

For example we do not at present have a Learn French group or a Flower Arranging workshop, how about a Dance group! The list is vast. However we do have a lot of new members who could come up with some new ideas for us to occupy our time. I can help you set up the group, and give you all the guidance and help you need to enjoy facilitating a group to add to our wide range of activities.

Eastleigh District U3A Facebook

To join it you must be a Facebook user AND a current member of Eastleigh

District U3A.

Security and privacy is paramount hence the need for the group to be only available to Eastleigh District U3A members.

If you would like to be included here is what you need to do….

Open your Facebook account. (If you don’t have one but would like one, I am sure Heather Andrews can help you with that).

In the blue bar near the top of the page (with the letter F) click on the white bar and type in:- Eastleigh U3A, then click the little magnifying glass at the end of the white box which will search for anything that mentions Eastleigh U3A.

The first thing that comes up should be entitled “groups”, that’s us.

Click on this to join and you will get a couple of questions to answer

1) Are you a current member of Eastleigh District U3A?

2) What is your membership number? (you will find this on your membership card).

Then you will see the group rules.

A blue bar should tell you ‘SEND TO ADMIN’. Click on this and Admin (Heather) will get your request. She will check your number and if all is well, you will be approved and become a member of the Facebook group. This may take a while as the administrator cannot constantly monitor her messages. Please be patient.

Once approved you are free to do as you please, make comments on photos, add your own stories or photos and strike up conversations with other members.

The New Poetry Club

We would like to cover all genres of the subject, whether it be writing or just enjoying reading poetry.

The group had it’s first meeting where we decided how our meetings will be organised.

Everyone was involved in the creation of a friendly fun group.

We have spaces for a few more like minded members.

We will now meet at 10 am on the 4th Thursday of the month in the Dove Suite, Pavilion on the Park Kingfisher Road Eastleigh. SO50 9LH.

Due to the noise we will not be meeting at ‘THE POINT’ xxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx

I was looking forward to the new Poetry Group

Because I wanted to be included in the Loop

So our Thursday meeting was at the Eastleigh Point

Which is such a large place, an ideal Joint

There were six of us at our meeting there

Reciting different poems for us all to compare

So I look forward to our next meeting again

Which is ‘chaired’ by our lovely leader Lorraine.

Day Trips

For 2020 trips we are open for any suggestions, we have had a few but nothing has been agreed yet. All these ideas are in the planning stage. I will have lists for the trips at the beginning of next year on my table for people to put their name and phone number if the are interested in going. Here are some ideas so far:-

January or February:- Tutankhamun Exhibitions at Saatchi Gallery in London. A last chance to see the artefacts before they are returned to Egypt. (Mary Cavanagh).

March 11th:-Bombay Sapphire Distillery. Followed by a tour at Whitchurch Silk Mill.

(Sue White).

April:- The Vine (National Trust) Tudor Mansion and Garden.

May:- Fleet Air Arm Yeovil (Ann Beeching)

June:- An interest has been shown for a return visit to Weald and Downland Living Museum near Chichester. They do demonstrations at different times of the year so we will try and book it when one is on. (Sue Aburrow)

July:- Montacute House which is approximately a 2 hour coach drive so would be an early start. (National Trust ).

August:- RHS Wisley Gardens Surrey.

September:- Longstock Park Farm (Waitrose).

Avebury Manor and Stone Circles (National Trust )

We need some volunteers to step up and help with the trips.

Outings can only take place if there is sufficient interest.

CHRISTMAS POSTER

Instead of buying and sending individual Christmas cards, why not

make a charity donation of £3 which will join you with other Eastleigh

U3A members in wishing all Eastleigh members seasonal greetings.

Members can pay for an insertion of their name onto a poster, and the

poster will go on notice board, web site and December issued

newsletter.

You can purchase an entry slip like this from Lorraine :-

Fill in the slip with your name and ‘Preferred charity’ or if you do not

have a preferred charity just put ‘any charity’, then your entry will be

added to the most popular choice. Then pay the £3 fee (making sure

you obtain a signature for receipt of payment from Lorraine or

Committee member). Then place the slip in the box provided at open

meeting. Or you can give it to Lorraine or a committee member.

On the closing date which is 30th November this allows time for it to go

into Newsletter.

On that date all the slips will have been counted, the charity with the

most votes will be given all the money collected.

The Poster with nominated charity and all participating members will

be displayed on the notice board at the

December social meeting.

Wayside Walkers

Walks are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 10.15. We sometimes have a nice lunch after the walk. We do have vacancies,.

There were 4 staunch walkers on a bright, sunny and warm July on a walk starting at Netley. We were walking on the ‘Hamble Rail Trail’ We were soon in Royal Victoria Country Park and continued on through the kissing gates into the Orchard where the trees were loaded with apples, so it will obviously be a good season. Continuing on with the main railway line down on our left, and Hampshire Police Training Centre on our right, Hamble Station came into view, and we could see the rails where the old railway line branched off. Apparently it was used in the past to supply aircraft parts to the nearby Aircraft Factory and also oil from Wych Farm to the BP Terminal, which is now supplied by boats.

Through Hamble Woods we walked and continued until we reached the cool welcome breeze from Southampton water, eventually reaching a steep pathway that led back to Royal Victoria Country Park. The temperature was now 30c so it was time for refreshment.
