Christmas is Coming 1New Products 1The Codpiece 2Gift certificates and Catalog 2
Designs by Rhenn is taking the time during the
rush and excitement of the Holiday season to
regroup and fill our store. We rolled out ruffs in
October and began work on the Hattie designs.
The Hattie designs include new underpinnings aswell as a whole new gowndoublet, bodice,
underskirt, overskirt, and sleeves. Some
accessories for the Hattie will include a new cloak
design and a pair of gloves.
The end of October and beginning of November I
spent with my mom helping her recover from
surgery. The trip was extended to almost three weeks, leaving my schedule in a bit of
disarray. But she is doing well! Yea! And now I am playing catch-up.
A neat idea occurred to me just a day or so ago and I have already started placing the
product in my store: hand made cloth buttons. This is a great use for the cabbage left
after the completion of a product.

Cod is a fish and so it would follow, one would think, that a codpiece is a merely a piece of cod.
(Sounds silly, but the very thought was put forward to me by my daughters friend several years
ago.) I would have to say, as outlandish as codpieces are to the 21st century sensibilities, I am
rather grateful a man didnt wear a piece of fish to close his trousers.
The Codpiece began life as a flap that covered the opening we now use zippers to conceal in the
front of a mans breaches/slops/pants. The word cod means scrotum in Middle English.
Makes sense now why they would use that wordthough now it makes one think: why they
would name a fish cod?
A codpiece could be attached with strings, ribbons, buttons, or sewn on. And as it started as
merely a triangular flap, it morphed into some very telling accoutrement. Just as a bumroll was a
womans way of advertising publically her ability to
bear children, the codpiece allowed a man to brag
about his ability to, um, get the job done, as it were.
The codpiece often doubled as a pouch where a man
could keep his valuables, like jewelry and money,
under his watchful eye. Gives a perspective on the
vernacular family jewels, doesnt it.
My boys each had beautiful codpieces a few years ago,
and together with a fellow rennie, they formed the
Cod Squad.

While my trip to New York was not for
fun, I did have a lot of it! And amongst the
trials of convalescence my mom and I dis-
covered that she has a love for the Steam-
punk subculture. Being the source of artis-
tic genes in myself, my mom wanted to tryher hand at creating Steampunk accessories
to sell in my shop. I commissioned, from
her, a set of four items that I wish to incor-
porate into some design ideas I have, but
she too will have items that have no specific
ties to my products to share with the
world. She even helped me to design a
steampunked owlhow cool is that!
Welcome to Designs by Rhenn, Kay Davis!
New Partner!
Each day I either begin the day or end it
with producing cloth buttons for the store.
And while I am cleaning up my virtual
workspace as well as my physical work-
space I am working on designs and ready-made garments. The Steven mans court
ensemble and the Zema upcylce Elf will
make an appearance before the years end. I
hope to have some upcycle faeries to add to
the whole affair!
Current Work
Upcycle: is the process of converting waste materials or
useless products into new materials or products of better
quality or a higher environmental value.
