Extension Ashland County 4-H Program Nov-Dec 2019
Dear 4-H Families,
As the weather turns cool, we start a new 4-H year. Welcome to our new 4-H members and families! If there is anything we at the Extension office can do to answer questions, please feel free to contact us. Clubs, please make sure to extend a warm welcome to new members and 4-H families, answer questions, and extend extra communication to include new members in upcoming events.
We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the 4-H Achievement Night and Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on November 16th. It is always a nice opportunity to catch up with friends and neigh-bors, connect with members and families from across the county, and recognize the awesome volunteers we have and the achievements of our youth. Club Charters are in for the most part – thanks to all of our clubs for their diligence on this important administrative task. I’ll be submitting e990 postcards for the clubs to the IRS this week.
As I peruse the local newspaper in the past month or two, I have been impressed at how often I
see our 4-H youth featured for their contributions to sports, music, school and community involvement. Importantly, I also hear many stories from community leaders and residents about leader-ship on the part of our 4-H youth that doesn’t make it into the lime-light. Sometimes the most signifi-cant stories are the ones that are unrecognized. Kudos to all of our members and families for focus and contributions to making our community a better place!
Ian Meeker, Bayfield County 4-H Educator, and I conducted research over the summer on the long term impact of one 4-H club and the feedback we got was profound. Copies of the research paper we published through the University can be obtained through our office if you are interested.
The Nortunens hosted the 4-H Ambassador kick-off last weekend with a hayride. We have a great group of older members who are interested in taking their leadership to the next level by learning new leadership skills and through opportunities to practice leader-ship. We also have a lot of new members who are cloverbuds this year (K-2nd grade). If you are interested in activities for clover-
buds consider hosting an event and getting the word out through our office. We have access to some new state cloverbud curric-ulum which is both engaging and easy to use. I am also available to help out with club activities, and we will be working with a college intern again this year.
Take a look inside these pages for many upcoming activities and educational events. If you have something that you or your club are doing that we should all know about, contact our office to help get the word out. We will have the annual slideshow during our Achievement Night program, and whether your club activities are included will depend on whether you get photos to Amy. I know that many, many good photos have been taken at 4-H events this year. However, we can’t share them if those photos only live on your phone or SD card. We’ll look forward in the next week to seeing some of those photos come in to our inbox. Thanks to those parents who have sent pictures throughout the year. See you all in a week or so! Be well!

Projects
What is a 4-H Project?
A 4-H project is an area that you want to learn more about during
the year. There are projects on just about any topic you would like
to study and explore, from art to woodworking, from computers to
rabbits, from clothing to small engines. So how do you know what
projects are available to you? Your club organization leader or
enrollment coordinator can tell you what projects and resources are
offered in your county.
Don’t forget to check out the project pages on the Wisconsin 4-H
website at https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/wi4hprojects/. On these
pages, you’ll find descriptions for statewide projects, Internet re-
sources and links of interest, county fair exhibit suggestions, state
specialist contacts, and other 4-H resources.
Select 4-H Project’s for the year in 4-H Online (where you go to
re-enroll). You can also select Project Literature either through 4-H
Online or email Doug or Amy in the Extension 4-H & Youth
Development Office, [email protected].
And remember, you’ll learn more than “subject matter” as you
complete your projects. You’ll learn many life skills that you’ll use
everyday of your life, such as communicating better, solving
problems, making decisions, and working with others. Good luck in
your projects this year.
A Big THANKS to all of our leaders and volunteers including: Seija Anderson, Mitch Tromberg, Taylor Hanson, Louis Fischbach,
Izzy Rasmussen, Viddy Wabindato, and Matthew Nortunen for helping with the Kayaking
and Swimming Elementary Adventure Day!
4-H Club Members and Families who helped with Fair Clean-up!
All youth & family members who helped volunteer at the 4-H Dairy Bar at the Ashland County Fair!
Kannon Kilander, Brianna Oliphant, Amy Mundt, Mitch Tromberg and Melissa Fischbach for helping
with the Mellen Elementary Adventure Day!
Tom Kovach, John Paitl & Heather Schutte for assisting with 4-H Member Evaluation Interviews.
Dan LaBlanc with Central Cross Country Skiing for running a CXC 4-H CANSKI Clinic in Ashland.
