Are you an avid or budding green thumb? Join in the fun and thrills of giant Punkin growing. Judging of categories such as largest, weirdest, best effort, looks most like Gary Ablett Jr, largest zucchini, etc will take place at the big weigh in day at the Deans Marsh oval on 20th April. The world record is 911kg and last years winner Mike Robinson-Koss weighed in at a commendable 26kg so there is plenty of room for improvement. There will be lots of prizes, food, Punkin Chunkin and festivities. For the non-believers there will be an edible Punkin category, though winners may have to eat their whole Punkin to prove it’s edible. Entry is open to all and is $2 per entry with funds raised going towards prizes and festivities. Seeds are available for $2 from Mike RK ([email protected]), Andrew B([email protected]), Bec at the cottage, or the Deans Marsh general store. So why wait, grab some seeds and Grow for Glory!! I am disappointed to inform you that the minimal work carried out as a result, has all but washed away or been hidden by weeds. Given that the initial work only covered half the distance requested, I am of the opinion the Council has in fact wasted whatever time and materials were expended on the project, which I can only describe as a ‘sop’ to the resi- dents of Railways Terrace, Arundel Road, and the Deans Marsh community as a whole. The school children continue to walk along the roadway to and from school, indeed I passed a group of 5 students yes- terday. Because the grass on the medium was so long and wet and the place they were walking had not had the now defunct path laid in the first place, they had to recourse to walking on the road itself. Being a group of 5, this meant they intruded several metres onto the roadway. One or two of them only have to be distracted by the kind of avid conservation I noticed yesterday, for a serious acci- dent to happen. I assume the Council would then be liable for damages? It is my belief that once there is a pathway constructed in a professional manner along the whole from Railway Terrace to the dip in the road just before the General Store where the road widens, there will be enough concerned residents to volunteer to share in the upkeep, thus saving the Shire from expending resources on maintenance. I look forward to your reply. Juliet Beatty—Deans Marsh

To Surf Coast Shire

With reference the petition from Luka Lesoky-Hay received by Council in December 2012.

I am disappointed to inform you that the minimal work carried out as a result, has all but washed away or been hidden by weeds. Given that the initial work only covered half the distance requested, I am of the opinion the Council has in fact wasted whatever time and materials were expended on the project, which I can only describe as a ‘sop’ to the resi-dents of Railways Terrace, Arundel Road, and the Deans Marsh community as a whole.

The school children continue to walk along the roadway to and from school, indeed I passed a group of 5 students yes-terday. Because the grass on the medium was so long and wet and the place they were walking had not had the now defunct path laid in the first place, they had to recourse to walking on the road itself. Being a group of 5, this meant they intruded several metres onto the roadway.

One or two of them only have to be distracted by the kind of avid conservation I noticed yesterday, for a serious acci-dent to happen.

Croaker Deans Marsh People Croaker Deans Marsh People Croaker Deans Marsh People Croaker Deans Marsh People –––– Dean Wilson Dean Wilson Dean Wilson Dean Wilson I guess it is a common thing but when, having moved to the Marsh, I introduced myself to the ‘man in the shop’, only to be told he was ‘Dean’, my reaction was delight – fancy that: Dean of the Deans Mash store!

Only later I realised that while Dean is indeed the man who knows what is happening when: the one to go to with a query or a request – he is not ‘the man’, that’s Ashley. Shame that, sorry Ashley, but it ruins the symmetry…

In other ways though and despite the fact that Dean is a Colac boy who lives in Birregurra, he certainly knows his way around the Marsh like few others. He has lived all around the district house-sitting and pet-minding, served on the Cottage committee, helped organise Music in the Marsh and the Pioneer Festival, and knows everyone’s likes and dislikes – newspaper habits, online shopping preferences and favourite treats – is that a dimmy or a Flake?

When not on duty minding the Marsh in one way or another, Dean is a student of digital media – a great downloader and connoisseur of horror, action and sci-fi - films, tv series, games: you name it, he knows about it and has probably seen it already. An occasional political thriller is also in the menu. Despite his up-to-the-minute familiarity with the latest downloads, Dean often misses the latest thing on television [- not that there is a lot any more]. Why you ask? No aerial, he replies. Sewerage is the current funding impost for Birregurra people - no such worries in the Marsh.

Instead Dean devotes available resources to his house and garden in Birre - gardening is another enthusiasm and if he wasn’t keeping Deans Marsh on track, he dreams of another outdoor job - landscape gardener? park ranger? zoo keeper? Perhaps not the latter: too reminiscent of an unfortunate incident some years ago house-sitting when the fully grown ‘pet’ kangaroo decided the outdoor accommodations were inadequate and he’d rather be inside in the warmth thank you very much. Dissuading him from that view took some doing and some hours.

Dean is currently studying accountancy and thinking about how to marry that with either his digital or outdoor interests. After expertly tending the Marsh for nearly 20 years, perhaps new pastures beckon? We’ll all be lost if that happens, and so will half the visitors who pass through the Marsh asking directions or already off course.

But if you think Dean is all just sweetness and helpfulness – know that one of his favourite films is the Texas Chainsaw MassacreTexas Chainsaw MassacreTexas Chainsaw MassacreTexas Chainsaw Massacre and he was born on Hiroshima Day so the Marsh’s Dean may have hidden explosive qualities…
