CVHS’s key club set up a lemonade stand in front of Walgreens to carry on Alex’s legacy. While selling lemonade we met a variety of people including an oncologist and a cancer survivor. Our vice president, Dia, said, ―[M]y favorite part was seeing how generous people were and how they said they were impressed by high school students giving up their time on the weekend for this cause. It made us feel good about what we were doing.‖ To keep up our spirit we made a ―honk if u hate cancer‖ sign. One of our dedicated members, Marianne, said ―It was so great to see the cars honking. We made a total profit of $65 to support the treatment of childhood cancer and received over 160 honks in half an hour. By working together, we were able to have such a successful event. If Alex had made it to this day, she would have been in her mid-teens. She believed, when ―Life gives you lemons, make lemonade‖. Thanks to this girl and Crescenta Valley Key Club, funds will go toward research pro-grams and to help children receive the treatment that they need. This event is just one more example of key club making a difference.

It is ideal that every child grows up having the opportunity to have a happy childhood. Alex’s Lemonade was started Alexandra ―Alex‖ Scott who was diagnosed with a type of childhood cancer right before her first birthday. Her goal was to support the treatment of childhood cancer by raising money to give to doctors to help them find a cure. She raised money by selling lemonade and at her first stand, she raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day. ―While bravely fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year. As news spread of the remarkable girl so dedicated to help-ing other sick children, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands—donating the proceeds to her cause.‖

our Ronald McDonald House project! Each group cleaned up one of six different areas, picking trash out of empty lockers along the way. By the end of the hour we had a spar-kling campus and 12 stuffed bags of trash and recycling stacked outside our poor advisor’s door. Luckily, the janitors came soon after
In an effort to provide more com-munity service opportunities for members who were busy on weekends or were unable to find rides to events, our club decided to start hosting weekly, on-campus activities. This was our first one – beautifying our campus – and it was a huge success! Over 30 members showed up; we ended up dividing them into groups of 5, each armed with a trash bag, recycling bag, gloves, and instruc-tions to salvage any pop-tops or pennies for

Members responded enthu-siastically to the event, which was not only a way to give back to our school but also reminded us all to be more environmen-tally aware and not litter. We will definitely be having more weekly events like this in the future!

WORK PARTY AT THE DISCOVERY MUSEUM
Because this service opportunity was on the same day as the Giant Pumpkin Festival and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, only a couple of members showed up. Attendees of this event met a few members from our sponsoring Kiwanis Club while working beside them. One of our fellow Kiwanians, Brian, is an arborist and he taught most of the volunteers how to identify which plants should not be touched and which ones were weeds. We also saw Mr. Ortega, our Kiwanis advisor, joking around with Terry, another Kiwanis member, as they dug out an unnecessary tree.
All in all, Franklin Key Clubbers had a fun time participating in this service project, despite having to work laboriously and deal with allergies.
Got Claritin Clear?
What would you expect to do when you arrive at a museum for a community ser-vice event? Surely you would be helping out with jobs in the museum, right? At this event, Franklin Key Clubbers were pleasantly surprised. As seen in the picture above, we worked alongside our sponsoring Kiwanians to clean up the creek next to the Discovery Museum. Members were told that coming into con-tact with the creek water would result in a high chance of sickness. Not to mention the possibility of poison oak at the site.
Pushing through these potential obsta-cles, we hacked away at all of the ivy grow-ing on the trees with handsaws. A few of the members weeded the unwanted plants on the left side of the creek. After we completed those tasks, most of us moved onto shoveling mulch into wheel-barrows. While two members shoveled the mulch into the wheelbarrows, two other members wheeled them off to the desired locations. Eventually, the tasks were all completed by 1 in the afternoon and the museum’s creek looked fresh and new again!
“What would you expect when you arrive at a museum for a community service event?”

Trick Or Treat for Canned Goods
It is that time of year for East Tech and Las Vegas Youth Professionals, Trick Or Treat for Canned Goods for Salvation Army. The annual service project was es-tablished last year, as a way to combine each of the club's specialties and become active with the connection between Key Club and their sponsoring Kiwanis group.
The project is a two week long process done every October every year. For each of the days, we would meet up in front of the school at 7 AM and end around 11 or 12 PM being the latest depending on the number of people. On the first day, Octo-ber 9, 2011, we passed out flyers to every car and house at two of the neighborhoods next to the school. The key clubbers and Kiwanis group decorated the areas filled
leaving with no house or car left without one. The week after, October 16, 2011, my club and Kiwanis group and I returned to the neighborhoods to collect the canned goods. All of us went door to door, reminding our fellow neighbors on our visit to their area and the purpose to why are we doing this. We received plenty of donations to the point it filled up one of the adviser's pick up truck. The service project was a time consuming, tedious process that required everyone's effort into making this a success. Everyone did a good job in participating in this annual event and I'd like to thank all who attended this project's second annual food drive. We all did it in the name of, "Caring - our way of life."

duties and instructions on several technology usages. It will serve
as a guide to have a better understanding of your role as an
editor in our district. I highly recommend reading through the
manual since there may be information you may not know. The Editor’s Manual can be found on the CNH CyberKey under
Officers>Bulletin Editors. If there is anything that isn’t covered
in the manual, please email me ([email protected]) for
clarification.

DISTRICT REFLECTORS
VICE PRESIDENTS As all of you know, this time of the year is known as ―The Season of Giving‖. So, how can YOU give back this year? Through one ac-tion: service. I challenge you to create an unique service project to give back to your community. Here are some ways to concoct a one-of-a-kind service project:
1. Start from Scratch: Sit down and brainstorm possible types of service projects. What do you want your focus to be? How do you want to impact your community?
2. Get Creative: Start thinking of unique ways you can serve the cause you have chosen. Don’t do the ordinary, shoot for the extraor-dinary.
3. Start Planning: Think of all the aspects of your project. What materials do you need? How many people do you need to accomplish your project?
4. Put it All Together: Now it’s time to put your project into action! 5. Enjoy the Magical Feeling: After you complete your project, a magical feeling will most likely overcome you. Enjoy the moment!

On Giving, by CJ Van
It’s that time of year, when you love to get cozy rejoicing in
the comfort of family and friends as the temperature cools
down, when your sibling might come home from college to
have a traditional family dinner, and when we reminisce
upon those tales of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower and
Squanto. As we approach and embrace the spirit of Thanks-
giving, an inevitable spirit of appreciation also takes over.
Don’t refrain from letting others know how thankful you are
for them. Set aside differences, awkwardness, and cheesiness,
and let those special people know that you recognize their sin-
cerity, whether it be your parents, teachers, friends,
neighbors, or even your dog. We all like to feel appreciated,
and Key Club members know that it also feels good to give.
So embrace the spirit! Give thanks to your peers, and give
service to your community. Most importantly, never forget about
self-appreciation. As you may embark on holiday trips, on be-half of the CNH District, we wish that you travel safely and
thank you for motivating other Key Club members to volun-
teer for their communities!
Key Club Standard Form Bylaw of the Month: Under Article VI: Officers Section 1 on the Standard Form of Key Club Bylaws: Officers shall be President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Editor. They shall serve for one (1) year or
until their successors are elected and qualify.
A club may not have any more than one President, but may have multiple Vice Presidents or
Standing Committee Chairs. For example, a Kiwanis Family Relations Committee, Programs
Committee, Projects Committee, or a Public Relations Committee. (Others may include a So-
cial Committee, Membership Development Committee, and a Major Emphasis Committee) It
is up to the club‘s Board of Directors and the membership of the home club to house these
specific standing and outstanding Committees. Select and add Committees that will ade-
quately serve your home, school, and community in all forms of SERVICE.

Winter Formal Look forward to Region 13‘s annual Winter Formal in December!
Proceeds support Pediatric Trauma Program.
As we move through the Key Club year, you‘ll begin to
notice more and more resources being added to the CNH
CyberKey on behalf of the Member Recognition
Committee. Check out the magical certificates, tutorials,
and more that are available for your use!
Video Tutorials:
These tutorials offer a complete video walkthrough of the
process of filling out certain applications or forms required
for recognition in California-Nevada-Hawaii. From
―President‘s Checklist‖ to a guide through the ―Nomination
Form‖, you‘ll find exactly what you‘re looking for with the
new tutorials.
Text Tutorials:
These tutorials, with a version for Microsoft 97-2003 and one
for Microsoft 2007, include guides for the basic steps in
completing an award or contest application. The topics for
the ―Text Tutorials‖ are different than those available for the
Video Tutorials.
Member Recognition Handbook:
The Member Recognition Handbook contains the
guidelines for each application available at the division,
district, and international levels, information on submitting
applications, as well as deadlines for the various contests
and awards.
Certificates:
As a part of ―year-long recognition‖, the Member
Recognition Committee encourages clubs and divisions to
recognize outstanding members and officers on a monthly
basis. It‘s important to remember that recognition doesn‘t
just occur at DCON! The certificates available are ―ready-
to-go‖ and can be personalized with the recipient‘s name
and school, but can also be modified to suit your club‘s
needs. As always, the Member Recognition Committee
welcomes all members interested in joining the CNH
Recognition Gmail Reflector at http://groups.google.com/
group/cnh-kc-vice-presidents?hl=en.

A Division Council Meeting (DCM) is a meeting
conducted by the respective Lieutenant Governor for
the members in the division. This meeting is full of
information about upcoming events, education about
Key Club, and much more.
At DCMs, you have a chance to learn more about
various projects and events, gain a better understanding
of how great this organization truly is, and to get involved
with the division and meet new people.
We encourage you to attend so that you can learn more
about what‘s been happening in Key Club. Some DCMs
are even joined with a service project, fundraiser, or
social, so you can be there for more than one reason!
