Seven years ago, a former board member worked with Evan at the Duke School campus, and introduced him to Nourish. “We had similar worldviews and focus. I saw Nourish as an organization that worked to change the world in ways meaningful and valuable, and became involved,” he recalls. “I am lucky that in my work I get to interact with medical students and family medicine residents. I get to see firsthand what it means to see idealistic, inspired young people. Students involved in Nourish are self identified and motivated to engage in social justice. I personally have been involved for 10 years in rural health in Mexico, doing health screenings in rural villages, connecting folks with disease to help in rural clinics. I have seen many mistakes made. Nourish does not come in as the Great White Savior but as an organization that is humble, understands that we can add value, but are cognizant of unintended consequences and issues of cultural sensitivity and complexity. It is that value – striving to get it right.” He explains, “These are undergraduate students who one day may be my medical students and I have the opportunity to mentor them.

This isn’t just a hobby for me. I feel very connected to Nourish and its mission.”

Hunger Luncheon 2015Nearly 100 local supporters and community partners attended Nourish’s annual Hunger Luncheon on March 27 at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill, raising $12,000 to support student leadership in the social justice movement and to celebrate the work of leading change-makers, both within our own

network and community and across the globe.

Guests dined on five different versions of rice, beans, and cornbread, Hunger Lunch’s traditional fare, ranging from gourmet Caribbean twists, to Cajun and Latin American versions of the dish. Nourish serves the rice and beans menu to highlight what residents in the poorest parts of the world - where people live on less than $1.25 a day - eat, which includes the 28 countries where 140

student Projects have taken place.

summer institute banquet 2015

Keynote Speaker Pape Gaye, President and CEO of IntraHealth International, urged Nourish students and supporters to continue to bridge the gap between cultures and to fight for social justice at the Institute Banquet on Aug. 1. “The idea of being ob-sessed with cultural competency is right. I urge you to continue the fight. Thank you all for joining the movement,” he said.

“It is a universal wish for each of us to be able to care for our families, care for our children, and to live peaceably with each other. We on this planet are much more alike than different.”

The banquet, attended by 80 students, donors and leaders during Nourish’s five day Summer Institute, was held at the Chapel of the Cross social hall. In addition to Gaye, the program featured eight award winners for service and dedication to Nourish.

Becca Holt is a Nourish alumna of UCLA, former National office staff member,

Alumni committee co-chair, and monthly donor.

“Every month I donate $15 to the Nourish movement. I’m proud to do this as an alum of the program. My $15 per month

adds up to $180 a year, and becomes a more significant gift. Joining the Nourish movement has been one of the best

decisions I’ve ever made. Nourish is producing wonderfully thoughtful students who are going to become agents of change

and have similar values and then do great work. So I help provide the funds for them to do that in a deeper way and to

grow in the programs Nourish provides.”

Lauren MonahanNourish is so great. Students do everything within the chapter from start to finish - from proposing a partnership, to fundraising, to creating and running business ventures, to student outreach, to training project interns. Yes, we have guidance and oversight throughout the entire process (we could not have been successful without comprehensive support from Nourish National Office), but what we do and how we do it is essentially up to us. This means that we are undertaking a crash course in starting a non-profit Chapter, running Ventures, etc. I personally learned more real life skills than I ever could have expected.

I love Nourish’s student-centric model. Not only do we get to do amazing work right now while in college, but Nourish is preparing us to be knowledgeable, experienced, and prepared agents of social change in the future.

I had absolutely zero business/entrepreneurial experience prior to Nourish. We thought cupcake deliveries would be a cute idea especially for parents to send their kids on campus rather than those generic, boring care packages. One of our e-board members was a great baker and had delicious homemade cupcake recipes that he had used for years. Customers ordered cupcakes online via Square, which were then delivered every Friday afternoon. Our pricing was 6 cupcakes for $15 (one flavor,) 12 cupcakes for $25. After the first year running our venture, our total profit from BC cupcakes was $894.

The biggest thing I learned about running a business is just how difficult it is in general, despite the fact that we are students first and foremost. I learned a lot from my fellow e-board members in starting the venture especially in preparing for the Venture Fund competition. We had to lay out our full business plan, gather sales and data, and plan for the future. It was absolutely vital that we had our Ventures, Finances, and Marketing Directiors to lead in this area. Through this process I learned how to create a business plan, how important it is to take detailed records of sales, and how to use this information to think about changing and scaling our venture in the future.

“Coming back to Summer Institute is so meaningful to me. I am thrilled to see the students and their passion and enthusiasm fills me with energy

and joy. I’m delighted to see the Nourish organization go forth and

continue in this new school year with their vigor and determination.”

Sindhura Citineni founded Nourish as a student led

initiative at UNC Chapel Hill. She is now an alumna leader,

donor, and dentist with her own practice in the Triangle.

clay + Neva whybarkWhy We Give“We can give. The students can’t. We can share in our success and let the ripple effect inspire others,” says Clay Whybark, a retired business professor at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Clay and his wife Neva, who has taught internationally, have spent their lives encouraging and enabling others to reach their poten-tial. “Our values involve passing onto others through enabling them, in the classroom and outside of it,” he says.

“There is nothing more exciting than seeing the changes that take place when students are doing a Nourish project. This starts on campus when they begin doing their Ventures. The change is phe-nomenal,” he observes. Nourish founder Sindhura Citineni was one of Whybark’s students, and the movement came into being while she was in one of his classes. “We feel like we’ve been in on the movement from very early on,” Neva adds.

“Then watching the Nourish participants move from Ventures to Projects abroad, and thinking about sustainability, it’s very ex-citing,” Clay observes. “This goes beyond the students who go to Institute. It has a ripple effect to encourage and enable those who are working it.”

Clay and Neva have given generously to Nourish since it became a non profit in 2006 and attend its Hunger Lunch, Institute Banquet and other events to provide their support.
