• names of people, cities, states, countries, months, brand names, buildings, etc…
• we capitalize proper nouns
Common Nouns• general words for
categories of nouns • these nouns are not
capitalized

Types of Common Nouns
Count Nouns• Nouns we can count
separately (1 bean, 2 beans, 10 beans)
• can be singular or plural
• use an article (a, an, the)• verb is singular or
plural too (is/are)
Non-Count Nouns• nouns we cannot
use numbers with (rice)
• no plural form• can use the article
the, but not a/an• verb is singular (is)
