From the Desk of Father Scolaro
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
While it may seem early to think of getting back to school, this week will see the first wave of our young parishioners heading off to college. It will certainly be an unconventional year, as many are starting early, and still others will be forced to spend the semester learning at a distance. In spite of this, I pray that many of them will still begin with a sense of excitement at this new beginning and new opportunity.
Because I think we all find new beginnings exciting, if not also a bit frightening. We are given a chance almost to rein-vent ourselves, asking what kind of person we’ve been, and what kind of person we want to become–maybe trying to instill new habits and get off on the right foot. But it also means finding ourselves in new situations and needing to deal with new challenges, especially this year. There is a great deal of potential, of advancing along the path God has mapped out for us, but also a great deal of danger, of veering in our own direction and finding trouble.
For our students then, or for the parents of students who might want to share some words of wisdom, I’d like to offer what I think are important tips for a great start.
1. Be confident. When we enter a new place, we are going to be very critical of ourselves and start comparing our selves to others. All the things we took for granted before will now be questioned, and we can easily think that we are somehow less than others who have abilities that we don’t or different values. Don’t lose sight of your own gifts, and see the gifts of others as a challenge to grow. Learn from others, but don’t forget your parents worked hard to give you the values that you have for a reason. 2. Be outgoing. Everyone is in the same situation as you are, trying to make new friends and find a place where they feel comfortable. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to strangers, asking questions and learning who might share some of your interests. Join clubs and leave your comfort zone. You’ll meet a lot of new people before you find true friends who share your values and help you become the best person you can be. 3. Be disciplined. Make a plan to accomplish your most important responsibilities first. You’ll accomplish a lot
more when you set goals for yourself and practice habits that help you reach them. That discipline will give you freedom to truly relax when you are able without deadlines hanging over your head.
4. Be faithful. So many people today think that they can get through life perfectly well without God. While this may seem true in good times, challenging times always come, and without God we’ll only feel helpless and lost. We need help from someone stronger than us, and we need guidance from someone wiser than us. Be sure to pray every day–thanking God for his blessings, apologizing for shortcomings, asking for his help. Take time to get to Mass each week and confession every few months. It may be hard at first, but these are the habits that will help you grow in what’s most important: the holiness that leads to happiness in this life and the next.
As much as these may be tips for students, perhaps we can all learn from them. Are we confident in ourselves, grateful for our own gifts while looking to others for opportunities to learn and grow? Are we outgoing, always looking to con-nect with others whom we might be able to evangelize? Are we disciplined, always trying to find ways to better utilize the gifts God has given us? Are we faithful, striving to grow closer to God each day? As we all find ourselves at a new beginning, may we see it as an opportunity to take a few more steps closer to sanctity.
Yours in Christ,

MY PARISH & SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Albert L. Winseman from The Gallop Organization conducted a study (2001) on the spiritual health of a congregation/ parish. The study gives indicators of a churches/parishes spiritual health. The following are the indicators: 1. As a member of my congregation/parish, I know what is expected of me. 2. In my congregation/parish my spiritual needs are met. 3. In my congregation/parish, I regularly have the opportunity to do what I do best. 4. In the past month, I have received recognition or praise from someone in my congregation/parish. 5. The spiritual leaders in my congregation/parish seem to care about me as a person. 6. There is someone in my congregation/parish, who encourages my spiritual development. 7. As a member of my congregation/parish, my opinions seem to count. 8. The mission & purpose of my congregation/ parish makes feel my participation is important. 9. The other members of my congregation/parish are committed to spiritual growth. 10. Aside from family members, I have a best friend in my congregation/parish. 11. In the past month, someone in my congregation/ parish has talked to me about the progress of my spiritual growth. 12. In my congregation/parish I have opportunities to learn and grow. I hope this will help us to become a spiritually healthy parish. Let us become an engaged parish supporting each other in our spiritual growth. Blessings, Fr. Joe Mappilamattel

School Supplies Our school supply drive is ongoing. Due to COVID-19 we cannot accept physical donations this year. Instead we will be doing a Gift Card drive to assist families. Whether students learn from the classroom or home there will still be a need for school supplies. Please donate either a Target or Walmart Gift Card for a family in need. We be-lieve those specific cards will best serve families school supply needs as well as any other essential items needed for their children. For security reasons please drop off cards in the mail slot in the Rectory office. Any amount you wish to contribute is greatly appreciated! Donations are now through August 31st.
Items of the week:
