Our Parish Vision Notre Dame of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic community of faith called to be

missionary disciples of Jesus Christ for the purpose of bringing about the Kingdom.

Our Parish Mission Formed by the Word, fed at the Table, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, we INVITE,

WELCOME and GUIDE each other into relationship with Christ, to GO OUT and

    MAKE missionary disciples.

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s.

Citing Pope Benedict, Pope Francis says that “in no way can the church restrict her

pastoral work to the ‘ordinary maintenance’ of those who already know the Gospel of

Christ. Missionary outreach is a clear sign of the maturity of

    an ecclesial community.

  • Missionary Discipleship...

    Hello, I’m Chris Buck.

This past Lent, I led a Follow Me program for the first me, The Gospel According to Johnny Cash.

    I was nervous.

I never studied theology. I’m not a biblical scholar. I’m just a guy who likes Johnny Cash.

But through encouragement and support from Peg, I developed the program from scratch, which talked about such topics as sin, forgiveness, and social jus ce through the life and music of Johnny Cash. All through the lens of our Catholic faith tradi on.

I learned two things that I wanted to share with you.

First of all, before this, I was always a li le fuzzy on the Holy Spirit, never quite got it. As I was developing the material for this program, I hit many road blocks, not sure how to proceed. So, I prayed for guidance. I talked with Peg. I prayed some more. Then a funny thing happened. Actually, it happened about 5 mes. During my early morning bike commutes to work, around 5:30 AM, I had these amazing bursts of crea ve energy and thoughts. When I got to work, I wrote all this crazy stuff down and was able to connect all the dots. It all made sense to me. I’m certain it was the Holy Spirit blessing me with Wisdom so that I could find the right words. Now, I get the Holy Spirit.

Second, coming to church on Sundays, si ng in the pews, and listening to father is not going to draw you closer to God. Sure, Frs. Paddy and Jhon, and most priests, have some good stuff to say. But, the magic really

starts when you begin to work your rela onship with God and verbally express your faith to others. Engaging with Him and proclaiming the Good News of our Lord brings you into that personal rela onship with Jesus Christ because it helps you transi on from your head to your soul. It’s not real un l you speak it in front of others.

So if a guy like me, who can barely say the word “Philippians”, can put his faith into ac on, I’m sure you can, too.

God bless you, and Johnny Cash.

    —Chris

    Hi, I’m Peg Buck.

I began heading the Women of Christ Ministry (WoC) this past season (2018-2019). I will share a couple things with you.

First, you may need to answer God’s call to be a shepherd and not a sheep when you least expect it. You see, I wasn’t seeking to head WoC or anything. In Spring 2018, Kelli Schanz, then head of WoC, asked me to consider taking over from her because she was reloca ng to Colorado. Though I was touched by Kelli’s confidence in me, I was (and am) in a transi onal phase, which purposefully

sought (seeks) less and not more. Yet, through the grace from parents who taught me not to readily dismiss an offered opportunity, prayer and talking to others (first, Chris, then SLT and others), I accepted the invita on to head WoC.

Now, my first year heading WoC was frui ul in many ways. I was able to work with a core group of women (Carol Critchley, Debby Kispert, Maureen Scheeler and Pa y Migliore-Torres) to provide offerings - some familiar, some new. During the year, I have been fortunate to receive words of encouragement and apprecia on

from women. From challenges encountered, fruit also came, such as growth in my rela onships with my sisters in Christ, prayer and trust that "all shall be well…" (per Jesus to Julian of Norwich).

Second, the Women of Christ Ministry is not mine. It is no one woman’s. WoC is a ministry for women and by women. It is as much each woman's and by her as for her sisters in Christ and by them.

So I encourage women to become involved with WoC. For yourself. For other women. For our Lord. He’s looking forward to mee ng you among his other daughters.

With Hope & Gra tude, Peg

discover the talents and abilities we

possess and to put them at the service of others.

  • For The Journey...

On the weekend of October 4-6, a group of 18 men

gathered for the parish’s annual The Road to Emmaus Retreat to help deepen their faith lives as Chris an men. Set on the pastoral grounds of St. Mary’s Abbey in Morristown, these men revealed their personal experiences, listened to inspira onal sharings from their brothers, and bonded in fellowship through spiritual prac ces. The retreat also included some moving rituals to remind them of the love and blessings that God imparts to all of us. Following Reconcilia on on Saturday night, Fr. Jhon celebrated Holy Mass with these men in the Abbey’s chapel, which further enhanced the solemnity and beauty of

our shared experience. This weekend was yet another opportunity to remind all of us that, like the original disciples on The Road to Emmaus, we are never alone—Jesus is always there to walk beside us.

    WEEKEND OF NOV. 9 & 10, 2019

There are over 1,600 families who reach out to the Interfaith Food Pantry

for help during the Thanksgiving season. The

generosity of our parish has always been a great blessing in helping reach out to many of them.

Please bring your frozen turkeys to the truck which will be stationed in the back parking lot before all weekend Masses. Let’s do our best to help bring

Thanksgiving joy to those in need!

    The Grateful Life

How can we live a truly grateful life? When we look back at all that has happened to us, we easily divide our lives into good things to be grateful for and bad things to forget. But with a past thus divided, we cannot move freely into the future. With many things to forget we can only limp toward the future. True spiritual gra tude embraces all of our past, the good as well as the bad events, the joyful as well as the sorrowful moments. From the place where we stand, everything that took place brought us to this place, and we want to remember all of it as part of God’s guidance. That does not mean that all that happened in the past was good, but it does mean that even the bad didn’t happen outside the loving presence of God. . . . Once all of our past is remembered in gra tude, we are free to be sent into the world to proclaim good news to others. - Henri Nouwen
