Our Parish Vision Notre Dame of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic community of faith called to be missionary disciples of

Jesus Christ, for the purpose of bringing about the Kingdom.

Our Parish Mission Formed by the Word, fed at the Table, and inspired by the

Holy Spirit, we INVITE, WELCOME and GUIDE each other into relationship with Christ, to GO OUT

and MAKE missionary disciples.

Greetings, and thanks for coming!! We are glad you joined us this weekend. We hope you found our time together inspiring, meaningful, challenging and perhaps even a little fun. We certainly enjoyed having you with us! We hope this opportunity will lead to many others so that we can get to know each other better. Jesus said, “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.” (John 4:14) We do trust and hope that you’ll find watering holes in our midst to fill your thirst again and again. We warmly invite you to drop by our offices for a visit during the week, or to give us a call (973-538-1358, ext. 105) so we can schedule some time to visit at your convenience. In the meantime, if there is anything we can do to be of service, please don’t hesitate to call or drop us a line. We hope you will join us again!

If you’ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God “good one—you duped me.” We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is “duping” him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God’s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter—who has just been made the foundation of the church—out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named “Satan” today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week’s Gospel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when it means following him to our very death.

SURVIVING DIVORCE SERIES

Marriage is meant to last a lifetime. Most engaged couples approach their wedding days fully believing and intending this. Sadly, however, too many hearts and homes end up experiencing the pain of divorce. This often brings about unexpected and unimaginable heartache, questions, and challenges. Is healing possible? Yes! That’s the good news this Surviving Divorce offers!

Surviving Divorce was created to bring hope and healing to those who have experienced the pain and loneliness of a broken marriage. It is for the newly separated and divorced and those still struggling with issues many years later. It will help them answer their questions, restore hope, and begin authentic healing. The 12-week series begins Wednesday, September 20, 7:30-9pm, downstair s in Rm. 103. Register online at www.ndcarmel.com.

Congratulations to our Maryann Johnston 2017 Recipient of the Vivere Christus Est Award!

Each spring, every parish in the Diocese of Paterson bestows the Vivere Christus Est Award (“To live is Christ”) on an individual, couple or family who live as faithful stewards of God’s grace and generosity. According to Bishop Serratelli, “The goal of this initiative is to acknowledge the value and importance of the laity and to express gratitude and appreciation to those who unselfishly give of their time, talent and treasure for the building up of God’s Kingdom.”

Our parish family of Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel has chosen MARYANN JOHNSTON as recipient of the 2017 Vivere Christus Est award. There are more ways than can be listed that Maryann has given of her time, experience, and loving care to many areas of ministry, to various people in need, and to the community. She exemplifies all that Bishop Serratelli intended when he instituted this prestigious award.

Maryann and her husband, George, have been members of our parish for over 30 years, and have two married daughters and two grandchildren. Maryann has served the parish generously in the following capacities: Parish Trustee; Pastoral Council member; Extraordinary Minister; Women’s Cornerstone team; overseer of Parish Nurses and Caregiver’s Support ministries; and Healing Prayer ministry. This is to name just some of her many important contributions over the years.

Maryann joins the company of equally faith-filled parishioners who have been past recipients of this Diocesan award:

The Vivere Christus Est award will be presented at a special service, Sunday, September 10 at 3:30 PM at St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Paterson. All are welcome to attend!

Please join us in congratulating Maryann Johnston and in thanking her for the gifts she continues to share with us.

Dear Parish Family & Friends,

With our Lord’s blessing and your extraordinary support, our Guatemala Outreach ministry completed its mission of building four more homes (for a total of 20 built on behalf of our parish since 2014) for four beautiful, humble and very deserving families in the village of Pastores, Guatemala. Each home is 13 x 19 feet, made entirely of concrete block, with cement floor, corrugated metal roof with a skylight, metal door with lock, and a metal-framed window with glass. The home was painted inside and out with colors chosen by the family. On the closing day (5th work day), each of our groups shared a closing celebration where a representative from the ministry handed the keys to a family member.

In addition to shelter provisions, funds and children’s vitamins were donated to the Clínicas Médicas San José (the FHTH clinic), which provides free healthcare to those in need. A share of the funds was also allocated to continue sponsoring the education of Alex Danilo, a young student at the FHTH Kemna ‘Oj School.

Fr. Jhon Madrid, joined us this year and was an amazing blessing to the ministry, sharing his time, faith and hard work each day with the various work teams. When not working at a site, Fr. Jhon ministered to the Guatemalan families, the FHTH workers, neighbors and children. There was much happiness shared through his Soccer Balls for Joy ministry!

Sharing Our Stories: Guatemala Outreach

With great faith and passion, Fr. Jhon concelebrated Mass at the Cathedral in Antigua each morning before the teams headed to their work sites. This provided important spiritual fuel to the ministers at the start of each work day. Last but certainly not least (and just a few hours before their Friday evening departure back to the US), Fr. Jhon celebrated the Baptism of Carmen Leticia, the beautiful daughter of one of the FHTH workers.

We feel grateful for the privilege of serving our brothers and sisters in Guatemala and cannot thank you enough for your support in helping us bring this vision to reality.

With deepest gratitude,

The 2017 Guatemala Outreach Ministry

a life-changing opportunity.” Jean Pankow
