The Career Services Office The staff members of the Career Services Office (CSO) at Notre Dame Law School are dedicated to assisting current students with their career planning and job search process, including career exploration and access to employers and employment resources. The CSO provides resources and counseling that support the great variety of career goals for Notre Dame law students. Recognizing that the primary responsibility for obtaining employment rests with each student, the staff of the CSO takes a proactive and individualized approach to offering timely and valuable guidance in support of each student’s career search.

Mission Statement We are dedicated to providing students, alumni, and friends with the information and tools necessary for successful career development and advancement.

We are committed to educating, training, and empowering our constituents to be knowledgeable career managers.

We are devoted to promoting the national and international recruitment of Notre Dame lawyers and thus disseminate throughout the legal profession the values, ethics, and legal talents generated in accordance with the mission of the Law School.

Career Exploration The CSO offers seminars and programs designed to introduce students to the variety of career options available to them. Presentations by attorneys and other special guests provide students with insights about particular legal-practice areas, government employment, judicial clerkships, public-interest careers, and corporate practice – just to name a few. The following presentations are typical of those organized by the CSO staff in the winter and spring months. Speakers include practicing attorneys, recruiting coordinators in firms, judges, professors, and members of the Career Services Office staff.

Support for the Job Search The CSO sponsors seminars, workshops, and lectures by guest speakers that are designed to help students hone job-search skills. Programs concentrate on the basics of the job-search process including how to find a particular job, how to write an effective resume and cover letter, and how to conduct an interview. Additionally, CSO organizes presentations relating to different practice areas, market conditions, and various geographic areas. Students can meet individually or in a group with any one of the Career Services staff members. CSO professionals understand that students have different needs and interests, and that individual counseling is the most effective way to help students achieve their career goals.

Summer Employment After the 1L Year The primary focus of a first-year law student’s time and attention should be to establish a solid academic foundation. To this end, and in compliance with the regulations of the National Association of Law Placement (NALP), first-year students are not permitted to have interaction with the CSO staff until November 1. After this NALP deadline, first-year students are strongly encouraged to meet with members of the CSO in groups as well as individually. Throughout the fall semester, 1Ls can attend any of the general programs sponsored by CSO. Employment opportunities for first-year students are many and varied. In addition to summer positions with law firms, first-year law students work for a wide variety of public interest employers, as research assistants for members of the Law School faculty, or in non-legal positions, which they may have held prior to Law School. Many first-year students will also find employment through the Summer Stipend Program. The Summer Stipend Program is a comprehensive, collaborative program through which alumni, students, legal employers, and various friends provide stipends for our students performing otherwise unpaid legal public interest work around the world. Additionally, a number of students elect to participate in the Law School’s Summer Program in London, England.

Employment After Law School Notre Dame law students obtain employment using a variety of avenues.

On-Campus Interviews (OCI) Each fall, the Law School conducts an On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) program that typically brings between 150 and 170 employers to campus. These employers come from all regions of the country and include law firms, government agencies, and public interest employers. On-Campus Interviews in the fall typically are geared toward second-year law students who are seeking summer associate positions with larger law firms and legal employers. In a typical year, our fall OCI program results in employment for approximately twice as many students in the graduating class as compared to the national average for OCI programs at other law schools. In the spring, several dozen legal employers will visit campus for interviews. These interviews typically involve medium-size and smaller law firms and target first- and second-year students.

6

Off-Campus Interviews The CSO organizes several off-campus interview programs exclusively for Notre Dame law students before the start of fall classes in August. These interview programs provide a forum for employers from one locale to interview multiple Notre Dame students in the convenience of their home cities. Off-campus Interview programs in August 2008 were hosted in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C.

Resume Collect Law students who wish to interview with legal employers who are not visiting campus as part of OCI may participate in the CSO’s Resume Collect service. Students who participate in Resume Collect will have a copy of their resume forwarded to the legal employer, who then either contacts the candidate(s) directly or, if sufficient student interest exists, schedules on-campus interviews.

Regional/National Interviewing Programs Law schools and other entities across the country annually host interviewing programs for law students. These non-ND-specific interviewing programs typically focus on particular areas of the law, such as intellectual property law or public interest law, or they focus on a particular geographic market. The CSO staff publicizes these opportunities and covers the registration cost for Notre Dame students who wish to participate in these programs.

Individual Employment Searches Notre Dame law students obtain employment through a variety of avenues beyond formal interviewing programs. Students are taught the skills and value of networking, are given advice on creating an effective resume and cover letters, and are encouraged to participate in mock interviews hosted by the CSO staff. The CSO has also partnered with internet providers, including Simplicity, Equal Justice Works, and PSLawNet to make available thousands of job postings and internship opportunities. Additionally, the CSO works closely with the Law School External Relations Office, the University’s Career Center, and the Notre Dame Alumni Association to help students form networking and mentoring relationships with alumni around the world.

Employer Recruiting Report: 2008-09 Academic Year Each year, as employers across the country make hiring decisions, they reach out to Notre Dame Law School students for summer and permanent employment. Employers actively interview and solicit Notre Dame students through a variety of means: on-campus interviews held during the fall; off-campus interviews held in August before classes begin; and through a “resume collect” process, whereby the staff of the Career Services Office collects and forwards resumes of students who have an interest in the legal employer. The following list is a sample of the employers who participated in on- or off-campus interviewing programs during fall 2008. These employers represent geographic diversity as well as variety in practice area and office size. (Please note: Employers are only listed once even when interviewing for multiple locations.)

Judicial Clerkships Report Each year, a number of Notre Dame Law School graduates elect to begin their careers by serving as judicial clerks. These highly-sought after positions provide graduates with a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the inner-workings of the judicial system, while at the same time honing important legal skills and problem-solving abilities. Judicial clerkships provide a graduate with confidence about his or her abilities as an attorney, but also enhance his or her value to future employers. As a judicial clerk, the graduate assists a judge, or a group of judges, in a variety of tasks including: research, writing, and administrative duties. Clerkships typically are one- or two-years in duration and are available with both state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels.

Public Interest Law The Career Services Office coordinates a variety of initiatives to encourage students to consider summer and permanent employment opportunities in the area of public-interest law. Each fall and spring, the CSO hosts a variety of informational programs and services, including a public-interest reception that brings to campus public-interest attorneys from across the country. In addition, the CSO coordinates participation in public interest career fairs held in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Additionally, the CSO joins forces with other career service offices on the Notre Dame campus to present a not-for-profit career fair. In the spring of 2003, the CSO helped to establish and coordinate funding for summer public-interest employment positions for first-year students. Now in the seventh year of existence, more than 100 students typically participate in this program each summer. Non-profit organizations, legal aid societies, state and federal governmental entities, and public defender offices will employ these students. Students who participate in these positions will gain valuable legal experiences while also being introduced to areas of employment outside of private practice. Funding for these positions was made possible by financial support provided by the Law School, NDLS alumni, student organizations, and the Federal Work Study Program. Students receive an hourly wage that generally covers living expenses for the summer.

Pro Bono at NDLS Pro Bono at Notre Dame Law School provides resources for students to connect with alumni and other practicing attorneys to provide pro bono services around the world. These offerings introduce law students to the professional obligation of attorneys and the benefits of providing public service, and recognizes the needs of the under-represented in society. The ultimate goal of pro bono is to encourage students to begin to embrace their role as members of the legal profession, including the responsibility of rendering public service. The Career Services Office administers this program by developing relationships with local organizations and attorneys and counseling students by identifying appropriate opportunities around the world. Pro Bono at Notre Dame Law School serves students by connecting their desire to serve diverse communities while developing their legal skills.

Notre Dame Law School Loan Repayment Assistance Program In 2001, the Law School established an expanded Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) to assist eligible Law School graduates who choose to work in public interest, public service, or other similar positions after graduation. Under the Program, the Law School has been able to assist a group of graduates by helping them repay qualifying law school educational loans. If graduates selected for the Program perform qualifying employment for at least three years, the Law School will then fully forgive any loan(s) it has made. By adopting the Loan Repayment Assistance Program, the Law School seeks to help alleviate an obstacle that has prevented many interested Notre Dame Law School graduates from pursuing positions in public interest, public service, or other similar employment. Additional details regarding the LRAP may be found on the Law School web site: law.nd.edu, SEARCH: LRAP

Alumni Loyalty and the Notre Dame Network The Notre Dame Law Association boasts a membership of over 8,000 alumni and friends who practice around the world. They help students and fellow alumni network throughout the profession, serve as mentors to help students define and refine their career options, provide financial assistance to students engaged in service, and return to campus year-after-year to assist and interview Notre Dame law students. Notre Dame attorneys understand and appreciate the Notre Dame work-ethic as well as the excellent education earned by students. They are very interested in helping ND students gain positions in their communities, and they readily seek out ND graduates when in need of co-counsel in other regions of the country.
