Notre Dame du Haut ~Ronchamp Chapel~ ReDesign Project By Chikara Enggartiasti BA in English DESIGN Professor Maurizio Scalzi Interior Design Class 28 March 2012

description

The project was about learning and understanding one of the famous works created by Le Corbusier, which was the Notre Dame du Haut, Ronchamp Church and asking, "How would you redesign the church if you had the chance?" So this was how I would re-design them.

FINAL  RE-‐DESIGN

Day  1  The  first  day,  God  created  the  light.  Without  light,  nothing  would  have  started.  Light  is  one  of  the  most  important  things  in  this  subject.  Le  Corbusier  has  successfully  designed  the  church,  which  has  its  magnificence.  One  of  the  parts  are  the  Clestory  Windows,  letting  the  light  shines  through  the  beautiful  colored  glass  of  Emerald,  Ruby  and  Amethysts.    I  believe  that  this  is  very  important  and  that  I  wouldn’t  change  this  part  of  the  design.

Day  2  The  Second  day,  God  created  the  dome  above  and  called  them  Sky.  The  sky  could  help  bringing  the  atmosphere  brighter  when  the  weather  is  nice  and  could  also  create  the  atmosphere  more  depressing  when  it  is  cloudy.  A  sky  is  an  important  part  of  the  nature  and  in  my  opinion,  it  is  sad  to  not  be  able  to  see  the  sky.  I  would  add  the  solar  bottle  lights  on  the  roof  of  the  Chapel  to  let  the  power  of  the  light  and  sky  brighten  up  the  atmosphere  of  the  inner  part  of  the  Chapel.

Day  3  On  the  Third  Day,  God  created  the  Land  and  the  Ocean.  I  was  inspired  by  the  design  of  the  Wedding  Chapel  at  Tirtha  Uluwatu  in  Bali,  Indonesia.  I  would  use  big  and  small  stone  tiles  to  represent  the  land  and  the  water  underneath  to  represent  the  ocean.

Day  4  On  the  Fourth  Day,  God  created  the  stars,  the  moon  and  the  sun  to  show  the  time  for  seasons,  special  days  and  years.  It  is  important  to  understand  how  time  works.  In  here,  I  would  add  another  solar  bottle  lights  on  the  East  walls,  where  the  Pastor  stands  and  start  the  Chapel  time.    Chapel  time  could  start  in  the  morning,  or  in  the  afternoon.  When  the  Chapel  is  starting  in  the  morning,  the  sunrise  (which  comes  from  the  East)  will  shine  and  create  very  bright  light  through  the  solar  bottle  lights.  And  the  lights  will  bring  the  joyful  atmosphere.

Day  5  On  the  Fifth  Day,  God  created  the  Sea  creatures  and  the  Birds.      Day  6  On  the  Sixth  Day,  God  created  the  Animals,  and  finally  the  human  beings.      Day  7  God  saw  what  he  has  created  and  He  was  happy.    He  rested  that  day  and  called  the  day,  The  Sabbath  Day.  Where  nobody  is  supposed  to  work,  and  spend  their  time  with  their  families  and  enjoy.  Everyone  come  to  the  Chapel  on  Sunday,  and  praise  the  Lord.    Noah’s  Ark  (The  Outer  Part  of  the  Ronchamp  Chapel)

The  story  of  Noah’s  Ark  came  out  after  the  “7  days  of  Creation”  and  the  story  of  “Adam  and  Eve”.  God  was  very  mad  at  the  human  beings  as  the  population  increased  because  no  one  was  “good”,  except  for  Noah.  He  was  the  only  one  who  would  obey  God  and  follow  Him.  So  God  commanded  him  to  create  a  ship  that  would  save  the  animals  and  also  Noah’s  family.  God  wanted  to  swipe  off  everything  else  and  kill  all  the  sinners.  In  the  end,  Noah,  his  family  and  the  animals  survived.         The  reason  why  I  decided  to  use  the  wooden  walls  for  the  outer  part  of  the  Chapel  was  because  I  was  inspired  by  the  story  of  Noah’s  Ark.  When  I  was  doing  the  research,  some  said  that  the  Christian  sees  the  Ronchamp  Chapel  as  the  Ship  of  God,  because  of  the  curved  rooftop  looking  like  a  ship.  So  I  wanted  to  emphasize  even  more  by  using  the  concept  of  Noah’s  Ark  because  this  is  also  representing  the  ship  of  God.  May  God  bless  and  bring  safety  and  salvation  to  those  who  follow  Him.
