SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Second Sunday of Lent; Daylight Saving Time begins; Girl Scouting Sunday

Friday: St. Patrick; Abstinence

Saturday: St. Cyril of Jerusalem

The Already and the Not Yet Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s there was a program on television called Touched By An Angel. The show featured three angels, Tess, Monica and Andrew, who were given an assignment each week. The angel would enter into the lives of people on earth to help them with a problem, or to help them learn an important godly lesson.

At one point, late in each episode, the angel would reveal his or her true identity. They did this on the show by having a kind of orange or amber-colored light shining on the angel. It always looked to me like they were standing under one of those heat lamps you might have in your bathroom for when you get out of the shower.

It got the point across, I suppose, but I thought it was weak. In Holy Scripture, people report the appearance of angels to them as a terrifying ordeal. Angels reportedly appear to be as bright as fire, or the sun. When the angel appeared to the shepherds who were watching their flocks by night, he must have appeared to them as something much more intense than standing under a bathroom heat lamp. Luke chapter 2 says, “The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.”

Likewise, in the Transfiguration, it says that Jesus’ face “face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light”. When an angel appears to you, or if you’re in Jesus’ presence when He is Transfigured, you know something extraordinary is happening.

And what would happen next? Would you tell? Who would believe you?

Another extraordinary thing is that Jesus commands Peter, James and John not to tell anyone about what they saw, until after His resurrection.

If Jesus was not raised from the dead, we wouldn’t know that this happened. We have this account in the Gospel of Matthew because Peter, James and John did what Jesus said. They kept quiet about it until Jesus was resurrected.

And then it all made sense, so then they told.

A theologian by the name of Wolfhart Pannenberg wrote that a key element in the Christian life is what he calls “the already and the not yet”. Christ has won the victory over death for us already, but we are not yet fully in the Kingdom of God. We are approaching full entry with each passing day, week, month and year. Jesus was Transfigured in front of Peter, James and John, but they couldn’t tell about it just yet.

The reality of Christ’s atoning death and resurrection is here already. It is accomplished. But during Lent, especially, we focus on the not yet – we are still on our personal journeys. We have promises to keep, and miles to go before we sleep. Blessings!Blessings!Blessings!Blessings! In JesusIn JesusIn JesusIn Jesus Fr. DavidFr. DavidFr. DavidFr. David

¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones!¡Bendiciones! Scrutiny By Paul Turner

Tell people they will face a scrutiny before they can join your community, and they will probably say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” Boldy, our church expects not one but three scrutinies of catechumens before their baptism at Easter. Scrutinies are rites of self-searching and repentance. When people from another spiritual background seek baptism in the Catholic church, they do so by stages. First we accept them into the order of catechumens. Then as they complete their catechetical formation we enroll them among the “elect,” or those chosen for baptism. This rite of election generally coincides with the beginning of Lent. Three times during Lent the church prays the scrutinies to encourage a spirit of repentance among those who seek a worthy celebration of baptism. Although scrutinies have returned fairly recently to Catholic parishes, they originated early in church history. St. Ambrose and St. Augustine celebrated them in the fourth and fifth century to mark the spiritual progress of the catechumens. The moral preparation of catechumens included prayers of exorcism to drive out the spirit of evil which kept them from embracing Christ as their light. In the scrutinies the church discerned if those exorcisms had achieved their effect. Catechumens entered the church, stood barefoot on goatskin and renounced evil influences all night. Those unworthy of baptism had to wait another year for Easter to roll around again. Today’s scrutinies seem less intense. They still include an exorcism, in which the priest or deacon prays that the spirit of evil may be replaced by the spirit of good. Their purpose is not so much to examine the candidates’ mental readiness but their spiritual readiness. Scrutinies offer the catechumens the support they need to approach the waters of baptism worthily. For those who are already baptized, the scrutinies invite us to embrace the same spirit of self-searching and repentance. At Easter we renew our baptismal promises as we see the catechumens baptized. So during Lent we renew our repentance as we see the catechumens scrutinized. The scrutinies remind us of the seriousness of our Christian life and inspire us to turn from evil and pursue good. They enliven our recommitment to Christ at Easter. Copyright © 1997 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Virginia St. #290, San Jose, CA 95112, (408)286-8505. Vinnie's on Broadway NOTES FROM THE HEART

The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you our work that your donations and thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and sisters in need. February Stats 82 volunteers donated 2157 hours in February. The 12 days that the pantry was open 393 families with 1296 members were given 5 meals each. 107 new people came to us. The financial aid office, also opened 12 days , helped our neighbors in need with $27,283.61 mainly in utility assistance. Also, $1091.65 in vouchers to the store were distributed for clothing and household items. Hope ministry had one expense for $412.78. We helped to pay taxes on a house that had 3 mortgage payments left. We couldn't see anything cheaper in town to rent. This was a very much a one time deal with also telling our neighbor to not discuss the type of aid awarded. Gross store sales were $20,581.73. Other donations, including second collection and Hope ministry, were $5373. Pick-ups Recently, our very much over worked main volunteer for furniture pick-ups went to pick up a much needed mattress that had very little wear on it. It looked good, so the volunteer picked it up to discover on the other side that the mattress had been on fire! BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church near the bell tower door. We continue to add more titles to our shelf for the Lenten season. This week’s featured book is Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living In A Secular World, by Henri Nouwen. The author wrote this book in response to a friend’s request for Nouwen to expound on the problem of how to live a spiritual life in the midst of a very hectic and demanding existence in New York City. Although it would be a stretch to find any similarities between New York City and Kerrville, we can all relate to sometimes feeling overwhelmed with daily duties, and a nagging sense that we are missing something BIG. Here is an excerpt from the chapter titled “Becoming The Beloved”: The question “How are you doing?” usually leads to very down-to-earth stories about marriage, family, health, work, money, friends and plans for the immediate future. It seldom, however, leads to deep thoughts about the origin and goal of our existence. Still, I am thoroughly convinced that the origin and goal of our existence have everything to do with the ways we think, talk and act in our daily lives. 6 So my task now is to write about that process of becoming the Beloved as it can be pinpointed in our very concrete daily lives. A great aspect of this book is that while Nouwen is writing to a personal friend, his language speaks clearly and convincingly to all of us who are searching for love, truth, forgiveness, healing, and the joy of being a cherished child of God.

As we make our Lenten sacrifices, please remember those whose

lives depend on the availability of your life saving donations. Due to

the short time that blood can be used after donating, there is a

constant need for new donations. Please consider giving up a few

minutes of your time to provide years of life for the least of your

brethren. There will be a complimentary breakfast for donors.

Students who may be unable to donate at their school drives due to

their activities are especially welcome.
