TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — God appoints Jeremiah as prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19).

Psalm — I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71).

Second Reading — Love with its many fac-ets is the most im-portant of the virtues (1 Corinthians 12:31 — 13:13 [13:4-13]).

Gospel — When Jesus claims his salvific mis-sion is for all people, not just the Jews, he is ex-pelled by the enraged members of the Naz-arean synagogue (Luke 4:21-30).

Greetings in the Lord! Today’s Gospel reading leads us back to the synagogue of Nazareth, in which last Sunday Jesus had said of Isaiah’s Messianic prophecy: “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Initially the townspeople praised Him – who wouldn’t want to be connected to this Jesus, the great wonder-worker? The Nazareth Daily Times might have written arti-cles about this proverbial local-boy-made-good. But the people’s approval did not last. Within a few verses they were ready to kill him, to literally send him over the cliff. Why? It seems they only wanted to possess him, to control him. “Work your miracles hereGstay hereGbut do not challenge us to be different from what we are.” They do not want to grow, to make the changes God might be asking through Him. Jesus came to proclaim He was Messiah AND to invite them to be a part of the Messianic journey, to be a Messianic people. They sensed this would require much change, especially regarding their long-held resentments against Gentiles. If they were to follow Jesus, they would have to allow long-savored wounds to be healed and deep-seated prejudices to evaporate – to think more expansively about God’s presence among them. God’s encouraging words to Jeremiah in today’s first reading set the stage for the Gospel story of the people of Nazareth’s murderous antagonism toward Jesus. Like Jeremiah, anyone called to a prophetic ministry must have great inner strength to withstand hostility toward him and his message – as would Jesus. Jeremiah sees himself as a soldier con-fronted by enemy troops, as a city in a state of siege. However, his strength is not in retali-ation against his detractors but in victory over self and selfishness. He must maintain con-trol of his emotions, even though those who taunt him do not – choosing not violence but perseverance in his ministry. Paul shows in today’s second reading what real strength is – not just for prophets but for all of us. He tells the Corinthians that love is patient and kind! It is not prone to anger. Join-ing with Jesus’ mission means we must see with God’s eyes and values. Our strength will be required NOT ONLY in bearing the insults of others, BUT ALSO in disciplining our own sinful selves to seek reconciliation, ridding ourselves of long-held prejudices, sharing our second coat, offering the embrace of friendship, or comforting the dying. Our Messiah calls us to be a Messianic people, helping Him open the eyes of the blind, announce the Lord’s favor (mercy), and reveal the Redeemer’s presence. This we will do with and for Him by our love. May we at Notre Dame Catholic Church and School say “yes” to being his Messianic peo-ple, the Church. In Jesus, In Jesus, In Jesus, In Jesus,

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY – December 8, 2015- November 20, 2016

~~~The Face of Mercy (Misericordiae Vultus)~~~
from Francis, Bishop of Rome
“I can’t tell you how much I hope this year will create a Church of mercy, steeped in love and forgiveness, ready to be like Jesus in every way. This is how the world is being saved!” (Article # 5) Reflection: What do you think Popes John XXIII and Francis mean by the term “medicine of mercy”?
“A Prayer for the Year of Mercy”
Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees God.
Show us your face and we will be saved. You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy:
Let the Church be your visible face in the world. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. Amen.
--Pope Francis
(We are invited to keep this prayer near us, and to pray and reflect on it each day, especially in this Year of Mercy)
AÑO DEL JUBILEO DE LA MISERICORDIA
08 de diciembre 2015- 20 de noviembre 2016
~~~ El Rostro de la Misericordia (Misericordiae Vultus) ~~~

St. Therese of Lisieux is the patroness of missionaries although she never left her convent. She died at the early age of 24, yet accomplished great things through the power of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacra-ment. The church made her the patroness of mission-aries to emphasize this most important truth: One soul coming before the Blessed Sacrament can change the world! St. Therese said, “My mission is to make God loved.” May she intercede for us in spreading Eucharis-tic Adoration throughout the world! An adorer is needed for:

Tuesday 12:00N—1:00pm

Saturday 1:00 a.m.—2:00 a.m. Saturday 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Estela Solis at (830)896-4217 or Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

martes 12:00N—1:00pm

sabado 1:00 a.m.—2:00 a.m. sabado 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

THE ROSARY MAKING MINISTRY will meet on Fri-day, February 5, 2016; 10:00 a.m. in the Fireplace RM. This ministry makes and supplies Rosaries to the mis-sions and military troops. Vinnie on Broadway's NOTES FROM THE HEART

The volunteers at St Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you stories that your dona-tions and thrift shop support make possible. The NUMBERS for the week of 1/18 to 1/23: Individuals receiving food 305. Total financial aide given out $5065. Store gross sales before expenses $5950. The FACES A mother came to us wanting her adult daughter and school age grandson out of her place NOW. She wanted bus tickets to send them back to Dal-las. However, the daughter was out of work and homeless. Grandma figured they could go to a shelter in Dallas. We would not purchase bus tickets to send mother and child to the streets. We did work with a local motel for a discounted room for a couple nights for the pair in hope that a cooling off period would generate compassion. We promised a squirmy wormy waiting with his par-ents who where getting food that, if he would be pa-tient, we had a surprise for him. His face looked like the Ninja Turtle cake was worth the wait.

Like us on Facebook. Look up St Vincent de Paul Kerrville (important to add Kerrville). We have thrift store pictures and deals, plus updates. WISH LIST: Food Pantry: Peanut butter. Thrift Store: Buyers of Mardi Gras Beads and Silver Plated servicing pieces.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. We are currently featuring books for Lenten meditation. With the book, Roman Pilgrimage: The Station Churches, one lucky person from this parish will have the chance to spend Lent and Easter week in Rome, going to each of the station churches on its proper day, and enjoying a meditation by George Weigel, with photographs of the sta-tion taken by his son, Stephen Wei-gel, and descriptions of the buildings and their art by Elizabeth Lev. The meditations are based on the eucha-ristic lectionary for the day, which is observed at Notre Dame in Kerrville as well as in Rome and the rest of the world. Thirty-three full-page color photos, as well as several evocative black and white photos for each of the fifty-four station churches, make this a volume that, as Bp. Robert Barron has said, “will delight your eye and feed your soul.”

Women’s Retreat Tecaboca, Marianist Center for Spiritual

Renewal, Mountain Home, TX. The Heart’s Journey Through the Seasons

Friday, February 5-Sunday, February 7, 2016 $120.00 per person

The retreat begins at 6:30pm pm Friday and ends at noon on Sunday.

We long for connections in the midst of disconnected lives—connections to ourselves, to others, to the world we live in. Most of all we yearn to connect with the sacred. At this re-treat, we invite you to listen carefully and closely to the wis-dom of each season. Using reflections, prayers, and medi-tations, the relationship between the seasons of the earth and the seasons of our lives are explored. Retreatants will connect their experience of the unfolding seasons with inner spiritual growth and movement, to know that the presence of God is within and around us all. Register online at www.tecaboca.com or download a regis-tration form from the website. A $50.00 deposit required with registration, with remaining fees will be due at the Re-treat. GROUPS: Five women may register together as a group, for only $500.00. Please call (830)866-3425 or email [email protected] to make arrangements. Online registration is NOT available for groups. Please note that enrollment is limited.

The retreat is lightly structured, with only a few group sessions, and plenty of time to walk the property and enjoy the holy grounds of Tecaboca.

PASTORAL NOTES

Lumen Gentium Award

Annually Archbishop Gustavo gives “A Light to the Nations” (Lumen Gentium) award to one member of each par-ish in the Archdiocese. This year he has chosen Ms. Dianne Albrecht for her faithful service to Notre Dame Catho-lic Church, St. Peter Upon the Water, and to the Archdiocese. I could not be more pleased. She will be presented with the award at a private mass on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, February 2, 2016, at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, San Antonio. I will be present in your name giving thanks to God for the servant of the Lord.

Mom’s 95th Birthday Thanksgiving

With all our hearts Mom and I and the rest of family would like to thank all who made the celebration of my Mom’s 95th Birthday so special. Particularly we would like to thank the Women of Notre Dame led by Mrs. Ginny Saip who set a table for us that symbolized the nourishment of the Lord. Kevin McCormick’s “O Solo Mio” made Mom cry with joy for her parents used to sing it to her as a child. Genia Schuler’s gift of a song written for her birthday to the tune of “America the Beautiful” gave us all joy! It was fun. The prayers, hugs, cards, gifts lifted her spirits and she is praying for all of you. I will never forget you for your kindness to the woman of my life, who gave me life and who daily supports my ministry with prayer. Blessings to all in this parish who love much.
