(In the cold weather the audiences are in the Paul XVI Hall) The theme he has chosen these Wednesdays is to help us beer appreciate and value the Mass. Pope Francis recognises that the importance of Sundays is diminished in our culture. We have lost the sense of Sunday”, he said. He answers quesons about the Mass so we can rediscover the great giſt God had given us. For example; Why do we make the sign of the Cross and Penitenal Rite at the beginning of Mass? What do the Readings at Mass mean? What is their purpose? Mass is not a show: it is going to meet the Lord. St Thomas the Apostle wanted to see and touch the nail wounds in Jesusbody, in order to believe in him. What St Thomas asks of the Lord is what we all need: to see him, to touch him so that we may be able to know him. The Mass meets this human need, through what we touch and what we see. Why go to Mass on Sun- days? What can we answer one who says there is no need to go to Mass because what is important is to live well, to love one's neigh- bour? The Chrisan Sunday revolves around the Mass. What sort of Sunday is it without the encounter with the Lord? It's true that the quality of a Chrisan life is measured by the capacity to love.(Jn 13:35) But how can we pracce the Gospel without drawing the necessary energy to do so, Sunday aſter Sunday? We go to Mass not to give something to God, but to receive the grace and strength to remain faithful, with Him in us and among us. In todays First Reading Moses announces Gods intenon to raise up a new prophet, into whose mouth God will put his own words. The Gospel shows how this new prophet is Jesus him- self, the great prophet for all mes. Jesus makes a deep impres- sion on the people because he speaks authority. He knows what he is talking about. His authority raises the lowly and fills the hun- gry. He includes people who are kept outside. It is the authority of the good Samaritan who looked aſter the vicm on the side of the road. We hear it, Sunday aſter Sunday, if we let it in.

Thursday 1 February Feast of St Brigid, one of our patron saints. Saint Brigid's Cross According to legend, Brigid made a cross from rushes for a dying man that she baptised. Many homes have a Saint Brigid's Cross in honour of the saint, to keep the home safe. Brigid is also the patron of the dairy and her cross was tradition-ally placed in the dairy to bless and protect the stock.

Friday 2 February Candlemas Day: Feast of the

Presentation in the Temple This is a festival of light, where candles are blest. Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple with the offering of the poor, two turtle doves. The symbol of the candle-light recalls when Simeon and Anna, after years of praying and waiting in the temple, recognised The Infant Jesus as Christ, the Light of the world. "A light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel."

St. Blaise and the Blessing of Throats Sat 3 February. St. Blaise was a physician and Bishop in Armenia in the 4th

century. He healed people and animals. Legend tells that sick animals would come to him on their own for help, but would never disturb him at prayer! As bishop he taught his people by his example, how to live a holy life . His holiness was confirmed by many miracles. Crowds came to him to cure bodily and spiritual suffering. The governor of Cappadocio arrested him as a Christian. Blaise was taken to prison, but on the way he prayed to God on the behalf of a child who was choking to death on a fish bone. The child was cured, which led to the sacramental blessing of throats on Blaise’s feast day. Blaise is a patron saint of throat illnesses, animals, and vets.
