STAGE 1 INTENSIVE SWIMMING The 2019 Intensive Swimming School for students in Year 1 and Year 2 at Arnold’s Swim Centre, The Junction will commence on Monday 2 December and will finish on Friday 13 December. We will not be attending on Wednesday 11 December due to the Year 6 Mini Fete. Cost of the program is $65 per student. An elephant note has been sent home. Final payment is due by Thursday 28 November 2019.

Sport SCHOOL ASSEMBLY The Sport Assembly will be held on Friday, 6 December. The assembly starts at 9:15am. Parents, carers and families are all invited to come along. Access via gate 3 in Kenrick Street only.

Years 5 and 6 Surf Fun Safe Day Years 5 and 6 will be participating in the Surf Fun Safe Day program at Blacksmiths Beach. Year 6 will be attending on Monday 9 December and Year 5 on Tuesday 10 December. Cost is $24 per student. An elephant note has been sent home. Last day to pay is Thursday, 5 December. Year 6 Farewell The Year 6 Farewell will be held on Tuesday, 17 December at Sprout Dining at the Crown & Anchor in Newcastle. A note has been sent home to all Year 6 students. Cost is $15 per student. Payment and meal selection is due by Monday, 2 December, 2019. University of New South Wales ICAS Competitions 2019 This year the University ICAS Competitions were delivered in an online format. Students in Year 5 had the opportunity to participate and trial the new mode of participation. 11 students sat the competitions in the areas of Science, Mathematics and English. As a school, we performed above the Australian average.

RSVP: Kate McMaster on 0423 401 349 Lightning Bots in action As reported previously, our Lightning Bots robotics team (Beth D, Jessica D, Naomi D & Sarbella P) received third place at the RoboCup Junior Australia Open championships in October with their magic show performance starring Magdalena the Magnificent. Recently they performed their routine for the school to show off their hard work, involving volunteers from the audience to show it was real magic. HSPS BAND PROGRAM 2020 Expressions of interest to join our wonderful HSPS band program will be coming home this week. Our band program is ONLY available to students who will be in years 3-6 in 2020. If your child is interested in joining the program please complete the form and return it to the office. The Tricky World of Online Ethics Matt Beard works for ‘The Ethics Centre’ and specialises in the topic ‘Ethics by Design’. Ethics by Design focuses on Learning the principles you need to consider when designing ethical technology, how to balance the intentions of design and use, and the rules of thumb to prevent ethical missteps. Understanding how to break down some of the biggest challenges and explore a new way of thinking for creating purpose-based design. Ethics by Design will be a huge part of our future. Engaging in ethical discussions at an early age encourages and allows students to think about important questions in online and offline worlds – ‘What does safety mean?’ and ‘Why is it important?’. Matt Beard has an interesting (and entertaining) podcast suitable for 7 to 12 year olds that encourages ethical debate and thinking about a range of (very) interesting topics. The podcast is titled ‘Short and Curly’ by ABC Radio.

E-SMART NEWS:

BAND MERGE: Just a reminder that morning rehearsals will now ONLY be held on Thursday mornings for ALL band members for the rest of the school year. This is a very exciting time for our band as we will begin rehearsals for our end of year concerts and performances. 2019 BAND PRESENTATION NIGHT: Our 2019 Band Presentation Night will be held in the school hall on Thursday December 12 at 6pm for ALL band members. Band Presentation Night is an opportunity to celebrate all the musical successes of our wonderful musicians. We will be having some special performances from our Year 6 students as well as some solos from some of our other talented musicians. Students need to bring their instrument and music and can come in casual dress. All family and friends of our 2019 band students are welcome to attend this performance.

LESSONS: Tutors are busy trying to finalise lesson rosters for the year. We have had a number of interruptions this term. If you have not received your invoice or wish to make a query regarding your lessons/fees please contact your tutor OR the Conservatorium directly on (02) 4921 8900. Please let your tutors know if your child is going to be absent so they can make appropriate changes to their teaching timetables as well as possibly start making up a few of these missed lessons.
