Strength of a Mountain
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

Fear Not Easier said than done. There is so much to be afraid
of today: war; the loss of life and the
devastation caused by it; unemployment and
poverty; illness and the pain and diminishment that
often accompany it; the threat of ecological collapse;
to say nothing of personal anxiety and trauma. The
readings for this Sunday all speak of the hardships
that loom over every life.
But these hardships are not the last word. Jeremiah
ends his announcement of gloom on a positive note: “Praise the Lord, / For he has rescued the life of
the poor / from the power of the evildoers!” (Jeremiah 20:13). The psalm of lament picks up the same
message: “the Lord hears the poor” (Psalm 69:34).
Saint Paul insists that sin and death don’t win: “…How much
more did the grace of God...overflow for the many” (Romans
5:15). Caught in the throes of misfortune, people cry out—but
God responds.
It is in the Gospel that the reassurance of God’s care unfolds. The struggles described there are real, but
they will not last. The imagery employed to characterize God’s care is picturesque and extraordinarily
tender. If God is attentive to the lowly sparrows, how much more will God be attentive to us? Even
more personally, God knows us so well that the very hairs on our head are counted. The admonition
here is clear: Never fear! If catastrophes threaten, don’t be afraid! Even if they engulf you or carry you
away, don’t be afraid. It is only temporary. God is always there, attentive to our needs, so fear not!

A Word from Pope Francis There is a tendency to justify transgressing all boundaries when experimentation is
carried out on living human embryos. We forget that the inalienable worth of a human
being transcends his or her degree of development. In the same way, when technology
disregards the great ethical principles, it ends up considering any practice whatsoever as
licit. —Laudato SI’, May 24, 2015

WHERE IS GOD IN THE MIDDLE OF
THIS PANDEMIC?
If you have been asking questions about how to
make meaning in these uncharted waters that we
are in, you are not alone. If you've asked where
God is, or how you might hear God's voice, others
are asking the same questions.
If you would like to take part in an online discus-
sion about your own experiences and how it all
relates to God and faith, the Redemptorist Adult
Faith Formation Team (Fr. Tony Bidgood, CSsR,
Fr. David Louch, CSsR and Anne Walsh) would
like to invite you to a virtual Zoom gathering of
people who want to share their thoughts, questions
and faith.
Simply email us at the following address:
and the Redemptorist Adult Faith Formation Team
will contact you about how to connect to the virtual
discussion. We look forward to hearing from you.
Peace!

Dear Parishioners,
Many greetings! I hope that you are enjoying this great weather, and are looking forward to moving
into Alert Level 2. Today is the Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time, and today we also celebrate
Father’s Day. Happy Father’s Day to all fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers and those men who have
fulfilled a fatherly or guiding role in the lives of young people. These holidays of our culture are not
exactly high holy days of the Church, but they do give us reason to pause, to pray for, and to reflect on
our fathers whom we honour. Five weeks ago, we offered Mass for our mothers. Today, on this
Father’s Day, we are doing the same – offering our dads, living or dead, on the altar of God during this
Holy Mass and invoking our Heavenly Father’s blessings on them. Today we celebrate, congratulate,
and pray for the men who continue to reflect the divine qualities of fatherhood as they lovingly
establish, nourish, and maintain their families. Fathers are a blessing, and we thank them for blessing
us with lives of dedication, endurance, and love. We pray, too, for those fathers who have found it
difficult to shoulder the responsibilities of fatherhood, or who have not been the loving and supportive
presence that their children and spouses needed.
Today’s Gospel passage is taken from the end of Jesus’ instruction to his disciples in the Gospel of
Matthew, as he sends them forth to carry on his mission of preaching and healing. He asks them to live
simple lives, and to expect opposition and rejection. After having foretold future opposition and
persecution, Jesus encourages his disciples to stand firm. Three times they are urged, “Do not fear!”
“Do not be afraid!” Instead of shrinking from their task, they are to proclaim the Gospel boldly,
because God will be with them, just as God is with Jeremiah in the First Reading.
These words of reassurance apply to us as well. We need not be afraid, because our life is in the hands
of a loving God. Sometimes we are afraid that we will make a wrong decision. Many people in these
days are afraid about the consequences of covid-19. At other times, we are afraid of what others will
think when we speak up for Jesus. We are afraid of what the future will bring for our children. We are
also afraid of growing old. Sometimes we are afraid of what bad health will bring for us. At the root of
these fears is the fear of loss. Every fear we have is grounded in the knowledge that we have something
or someone to lose. I can lose my job, family, house, money, health and even life itself. Rejection and
loss are the basis of our fears. But we forget one thing: whatever trouble or crisis affects us; we know
that God understands it better than we ourselves. Our Heavenly Father knows exactly what is
happening. Jesus walks with us, and the Holy Spirit guides us and sustains us. God gives us good
friends, family, and supports on the journey. They show us the face of a loving God!
St John Paul II used to encourage people by saying, “Don’t be afraid.” The next time fear grips us, we
need to remember that being faithful to Christ wherever we meet him in this life is much more
important than our fear of rejection and loss. Also, let us take a moment to recall some of the great
promises of God. Let us remind ourselves that God cares – we are each a dear child of God, who cares
for each of us. “Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” The last verse of Psalm 27
sums it up nicely: “Trust in the Lord. Have Faith; do not despair. Trust in the Lord.”
So, let’s encourage each other, especially on this day. And let’s encourage and support parents,
grandparents, step-parents, foster-parents, guides and mentors to be strong as they lead and support
their families. Many blessings, and Happy Father’s Day.
In Christ,
Fr. Ciro A Perez, CSsR
