Notice of CareerTrack Process Changes Effective February 6, 2006 This page contains important information about changes to the CareerTrack process since the User Guide was initially created. Effective February 6, 2006, we will begin posting all nonagreement vacancies up to and including positions in salary band 6. In order to be considered for a nonagreement vacancy, you must apply to the job posting in CareerTrack, regardless of whether the position is on your career preference list. Career preferences take on a new meaning now that employees must apply to specific job postings. Although career preference selections will no longer be used as the primary mechanism to generate candidate pools, they will be used in conjunction with CareerTrack’s new job agent functionality to automatically alert you (via an email notification) on a daily basis when a job on your career preference list matches a job that is posted. After logging in to CareerTrack and reviewing the description, location, etc. of the specific opening, you can decide whether or not to apply to the posting. Also, the number of jobs that you can have on your career preference list has been increased from a maximum of 6 to a maximum of 20. In addition to using career preferences as a job agent, you should periodically check the job posting section of CareerTrack since newly created jobs (that have not been available as a career preference selection) may be posted on occasion. Job posting will not be required for career growth advancements or personnel actions that result from reorganizations.

Job Postings

Norfolk Southern Corporation 51

Job Postings

The Job Postings functionality of CareerTrack allows you to search job postingsand view your current job applications. CareerTrack Job Postings will replaceNAPO, Norfolk Southern’s current system. Job Postings will only be used on alimited basis, because the selections employees make in Career Preferenceswill be the primary method for identifying candidates for jobs and fillingvacancies. Job Postings will normally be used when Career Preferences doesnot identify enough qualified candidates or when there is a new job that has notyet been included in Career Preferences.

If you apply for a position through Job Postings, you must have:

Completed your online resume Taken the NS Management Assessment test

Remember, just like Career Preferences, you should apply for positions that arerealistic next assignments rather than jobs that are your ultimate career goal.

One of the advantages of the new system over the old system is that you don’thave to fill out an application every time you apply for a job. Your online resumeis automatically paired with your online application. If you’re included in the finalpool of qualified candidates, you will receive an e-mail notification that you’reunder consideration for the position.

This screen has search capabilities similar to the Career Preferences screen, however you can usually see all the job postings from this screen by using thescroll bars.

Norfolk Southern Job Families

Norfolk Southern worked with Personnel Decisions International (PDI), a globalmanagement and human resources consulting firm, to conduct an extensivestudy of Norfolk Southern management jobs below the level of SeniorManagement. One of the study’s primary goals was to analyze the criticalactivities performed by management jobs at NS.

PDI confirmed that all of our management jobs share a core set of criticalactivities. For example, jobs in all job families require employees to be honest, professional, and ethical and involve understanding and working within themission, goals, policies, and procedures of the organization. Beyond the core setof activities, PDI found groups of jobs that involve similar activities. In fact, basedon similarities in activities performed, PDI, in conjunction with Norfolk Southern, identified seven major groups of jobs. Most of our management jobs can beclassified into one of the following seven groups, or job families:

Commercial Services General Analytical General Operations Investigative Research Process Support Technical Analytical Technical Operations

Listed below each of the job families, you will find descriptions of some of theactivities that are typically performed. Although these are not comprehensivelists, they will help you understand how jobs may differ among job families. If youwant to know the job family to which a specific job belongs, refer to the CareerPreference section of CareerTrack. With CareerTrack, you can even search foror browse jobs by job family.

After you take the NS Management Assessment, which was developed by PDI tomeasure competencies that are critical for successful performance in ourmanagement jobs, you can attend an optional CareerTrack DevelopmentWorkshop. If you attend a workshop, you will receive feedback on your testresults and materials to help you create a development plan. The information youwill receive at the workshop can help you determine the types of developmentactivities that may have the biggest impact on your performance in your currentjob and the job families in which you may be the most successful.
