MSU’s Home for the HolidaysFriday, Dec. 21, Noon; Monday, Dec. 24, 2 p.m.MSU’s College of Music will offer their annual Home for the Holi-days concert in early December. WKAR will be there to record the program for radio and televi-sion broadcasts. (See page 5 or television listings for TV air dates). The concert will celebrate the spirit of the season with a festive collection of classic holiday songs showcasing the talents of MSU’s Symphony Orchestra, Chorale, State Singers, Choral Union and the MSU Children’s Choir.

A Festival of Nine Lessons and CarolsSunday, December 24, at 10 a.m. In what has become a holiday tradition, 90.5 WKAR again presents this annual service from King’s College Choir. The Christ-mas Eve broadcast includes carols drawn from traditional Christmas music and lessons presented by members of the Cambridge University community. They range from the Prophecies of the Old Testament to the text of St. Luke. The service has been presented every year on Christmas Eve since 1918, not even breaking tradition during World War II.

New Radio Programs Premiere on 90.5 ClassicalDecember is a big month for 90.5 Classical fans. Two new local programs will premiere this month, along with several holiday specials.“It’s all about greatly expanding our local classical music programming,” says Peter Whorf, WKAR Radio station manager. “It’s vital for the classical music community to regularly be plugged in on what’s happening in mid-Michigan concert halls, schools and universities.”Peter and 90.5 Classical hosts have recently been meeting with radio listeners for informal classical conversations. He has also welcomed guest hosts from regional symphonies to share their favorites with listeners. On Thursday, Dec. 6, from Noon to 2 p.m., he will welcome Arie Lipsky, music director of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. He’ll share his personal favorites and preview upcoming musical selections from the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s current season.Several new classical series will premiere this month, along with holiday specials. Here’s a quick look.

MSU Faculty Recital SeriesWednesday, Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m.Ralph Votapek may be one of the best-known pianists in mid-Mich-igan, but the career of this MSU College of Music professor emeri-tus extends globally. Votapek was the first winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and has appeared as soloist with many of the major symphony orchestras throughout the world. Now he will be featured as the first artist in WKAR’s new MSU Faculty Recital Series. The series will air monthly and may include intimate solo or ensemble recitals or a performance by MSU’s sym-phony orchestra.

What’s New on WKARFridays at 2 p.m., beginning Dec. 7WKAR’s music library is continu-ally receiving new releases. Some of these are new performances of the traditional classical repertoire, while others may include more contemporary classical composi-tions.What’s New on WKAR will feature recent additions to the WKAR col-lection. Peter Whorf will host the weekly two-hour show. On December 14 and 21, an hour of the program will be dedicated to new holiday releases.
