    From New Birth to Eternity

(An inductive study on PSALM 23)

    By Evg. Koshy Mathew, Mumbai

    PSALM 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures:

he leads me beside the still waters.

He restores my soul: he leads me in the

paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the

shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you

are with me; your rod and your staff they

    comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the

presence of my enemies: you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell

in the house of the LORD forever.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or

persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor

powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any

other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ

    Jesus our Lord.

Why Lord compares man with sheep? Similarity in behavior Lost man cannot come back by himself to God Similar in mob instinct, fear, timid, stupidity, stubbornness etc. Eze.34:18-21

WHY I CALL HIM LORD HE IS MY CREATOR HE IS MY REDEEMER HE CARES FOR ME1. HE IS MY CREATOR

My relation with Him Ps. 139 V.1-6 He is omniscience 7- 12 He is omnipresent 13-18 He is omnipotent

So Psalmist desires to come under his ownership and complete surrenderv.23-24

    2. HE IS MY REDEEMER We were lost, but he came to save us - Isa.53:6 He paid a great price for us so we belong to Him - 1 Cor.6:19-20;

    1 Pet.1:19

Compare his sufferings to save us - Garden of Gethsemane.3. HE CARES FOR ME

He calls them by Name John - 10:3 They know His voice - 10:4,14,27-28 He leads them carefully - 4,27-28

Jesus the shepherd - cares for you No wound is deeper than, His mercy is able to heal No separation is wider than, His presence is able to bridge No sorrow is heavier than, His love is able to comfort No need is greater than, His grace is able to supply

So cast all your cares on Him We should bear the mark of His ownership

Story of the Hebrew servant Exo.21:1-6 Paul had it on his body Gal.6:17

    Are you under His LORDSHIP?LORDSHIP

Jesus Christ is Lord- disciples nevercalled Him Jesus in the Gospels - He

    is LORD

    Lordship defined - Acts 9:5-6 Lordship disputed - Acts 10:14 Lordship denied - Matt.7:21-23

    Class-2

    1(b) - I SHALL NOT WANT

He is my resource Primary meaning - I lack nothing, no deficiency. Broader meaning absolute contentment. Sheep, like David is content with God's care upon him. Sheep needs many things, like grass, water, shelter, protection from

    storm and parasites etc.

Prosperity theology Bible is not teaching prosperity theology - Hab.3:17-19 Tribulation is promised - Jn.16:33 Jesus Christ became poor for our sake

Contentment theology I shall not want is 'contentment theology' I have learned,.....to be content - Phi.4:11-12 I have all... I am full - 4:18

'My God shall supply all your need' not greed - 4:19 ..be content with such things as ye have - Heb.13:5 1Tim.6: 6-8.

Our attitude towards wealth The way a person handles money is an indicator of our relationship with

    God.

2085 verses deals with Money and wealth, 500 on prayer. Out of 38 parables 16 deals with money and wealth. Material prosperity is not the mark of God's approval of our life.

    Eg. Lazarus and rich man.

God blesses, both wicked and good with sun and rain. Matt.5:45-48 So God's blessing is not an indicator of our spiritual state. Eg. Laodicea

    and Smyrna Rev.2:9 and 3:17;

Be content ...He shall provide Read Ps.34:10 Are you content with the divine provisions?

Israelites murmured against God. Num.11:4-6, in spite of eating MannaPs.105:37

    (6) DCBA Bible Study ( Sept/Oct. 2012)

    1. Free from fear Due to timid nature, sheep refuse to lie down unless they are free from

    fears.

Presence of the shepherd relieves them from fear. "fear not ....I will be with thee" - Isa.43:1-2 "Lord....delivered me from all my fears" - Ps.34:4 Refer. Ps 4:8; 2 Tim. 1:7. "I am with you always"- Matt.28:20o His presence in the burning furnace - Dan. 3: 24-27o His presence in the storm - Matt.14:24,27

    2. Free from friction Cruel competition exist among the sheep Fighting to be 'top sheep' Ezekiel.34:16,

    20-22

'Butting order' Eze.34:16,20-22 Cruel competition In the process of this competition people

    are hurt.

Less aggressive sheep are often far more contend, quiet and restful. Do not quarrel on the way - Gen.45:24 What was it ..ye disputed..on the way - Mk.9:33 Refer. Phil. 4:2; Deut. 24:9

    3. Free from flies Flies and parasites causes damage to the flock Flies such as nasal flies, bot flies, warble

    flies

Other insects like ticks, mites etc.

    4. Free from hunger Or Free from scarcity of food Sheep thrive in a dry semi-arid area Proper land management is needed to

    prepare green pastures.

Tilling, seeding, planting grains, legumes Removing poisonous and useless weeds How to 'find pasture'? Read John. 10:9 He has promised 'land flowing with milk

    and honey'.

2 (b)HE LEADTH ME BESIDE THE STILL WATERS

Sheep thrive in dry, semi-arid country stillrequire water.

More than 70% of the body is composed ofwater.

For proper metabolism and well-being water isa must.

Thirst is a physiological indicator for the needof water.

o Man is a spiritual being so there is always a deep inner sense of searchingand seeking after God.

o "As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God."Ps.42:1(ESV)

o If sheep is not lead properly it may drink polluted water and can causediseases - 1Pet.2:1-2

o Infested with internal parasites like liver fluke, Nematodes etc. Jesus stood and cried, saying, if any man thirst, let him come to me, and

    drink." Jn 7:37

Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinks of this water shall thirstagain: But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never

thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water

    springing up into everlasting life.Jn4:13-14

Blessed are they who do..... thirst after righteousness: for they shall befilled. Mat. 5:6

Three sources of water for sheep

Shepherd alone knows, still quiet, clean pure water Three sources are:

    1. Dew on the grass2. Deep wells3. Springs and streams

    1. Dew on the grass Sheep gets up early in the morning to feed "water

    drop" covered grass.

Getting up early morning to commune with God ismost refreshing.

It is a blessed experience to spend time with theLord - Isa.50:4

Also refer Ps I and Jer.17:8; Mal.3:16 Nothing in this world can give us lasting

    satisfaction

Jn.4:6,11-12 Refer Jer. 2:13 Christ alone can give us satisfaction

    2.Water from deep wells

    Refer. Gen.30:38;Jn 4:6,11-12;Gen.29:2-10;cp.Gen.24:16, v.20; Exo.2:16-17

Wells were like great rooms chiseled out ofrocks, ramps running down to the water

    trough

Cool, clear, clean water is collected into thewater trough.

    3. Water from streams Sometimes shepherd leads the sheep to the

streams that flows from the hills Ps.104:10-

    3 (a)HE RESTORETH MY SOUL

Many a times sheep need restoration fromfall

David was a man after God's own heart. Yet many times God restored and

    refreshed him

    We read "David recovered all"1Sam.30:6,19

    'CAST SHEEP'

'Cast sheep' is an old English shepherd's term for a sheep that hasturned over on its back

Cast down is a mental state.Ps.42:5-6 Cast sheep is both mental and physical

    state.

A sheep cannot get up by itself - apathetic sight

A vigilant shepherd restores such ones. He always counts to find out cast sheep

Search for the lost/ Cast sheepGREAT SHEPHERD - Heb.13:20

How does it happen? Three following ways it can happen:

    1. Search for a 'soft spot' - search forcomfort

    2. Heavy wool depots3. Over-fat sheep

  • 7/29/2019 Notes of PSALM 23-Eng

    11/30

    (11) DCBA Bible Study ( Sept/Oct. 2012)

    1. SEARCH FOR A SOFT SPOT - love for worldly comfort

Sheep prefer to lie down in some little hollow or depression Suddenly the Centre of gravity shifts. It struggles in panic and that leads to build up gases in the

    rumen

Rumen expands and cut off blood circulation to extremitiesmainly to legs

Remember Lot's wife Six downward move of Lot Gen.13:10-14

    1. Lot lifted up his eyes - walked by sight

    2. Lot chose- a will full decision.

    3. Lot journeyed east -Ps.1

    4. Lot dwelt in the cities - v.12

    5. Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom v.12

    6. Lot separated from Abraham v.11,14

SO HE HAD A FALL - SEARCH FOR A SOFT SPOT2. HEAVY WOOL DEPOT- self life or pride of life

Priest should not enter with wool in the holy place.Ezek.44:18 Gen.3:19, Corinthians were 'puffed up' spiritual pride

    3. OVER- FAT SHEEP- flesh1. Material success is no measure of spiritual health.2. Eg. Laodecia church, Rev.3:17- they had material prosperity -

    over fat.

    3. Lust of the flesh is something that can cause a fall.

3 (b) - HE LEADTH ME IN THE PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS....

    Shepherding and Land management

Over grazing and poor management will damage the grazing land. So a Good shepherd will consider the following land management

    concept.

    1. Before leading the sheep to the pasture shepherd will considerthe carrying capacity of the land2. Excessive grazing will uproot the grasses. So he will move thesheep from one grass land to another. This will help to grow the

grasses in the grazed area. Over grazing may lead to soil

    erosion.

    3. Preferential grazing may lead to parasitic infestation. Moving to anew grazing area is essential to prevent this; otherwise live

    stock will become weak. Gen.37:16-17

    LOCAL ASSEMBLY - Pasture/ Pastor

    1. Concept of carrying capacity. What should be the minimumand maximum number for a local assembly.Matt.18:20; Mk.

    6: 40; compare 2 Chro. 2:18 (overseers. 42:1).

2.Change the grazing land- Plurality of leadership. No, one manministry, change of ministry- Change of person.

    3. Change of topics - In sheep there is a tendency forpreferential feeding; it will lead to parasitic infections.

Balanced teaching of various doctrines, essential for healthy

    sheep.

    HE LEADS ME....

'Lord led me' first reference - Gen.24:27 Sheep's own ways are damaging ways If sheep is left alone it is disastrous. Read Isa. 53:6 Damaging ways - Prov.16:25;14:12;Jer.10:23-24 Jesus saw sheep without shepherd - Matt.9:36. Jesus is the way - Jn.14:6;10:3-4 Let's walk in His ways - Ep.5:2,8 walk in love & also as children

    of light

How does He lead me....1. We walk by faith, not by sight 2 Cor.5:7

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your waysmy ways, said the LORD.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my wayshigher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."Isa.55:8-9

Samuel selecting the King 1Sam.16:7,12 Refer Prov.3:5-6;16:1-3,9.Entrust our ways to Him Lord reveals His ways through His word In our collective gatherings God reveals His ways to us

Secondly, personal reading of the word with a 'renewed mind'will reveal His ways. Rom12:12:1-2

    2. His paths are righteous ones, no unrighteousness in it.

Our devotion and desire to walk in His ways will help us to walkin the paths of righteousness. Psalm.25:12;37:4-5 1The.4:1

Why we need to pass through the valley?1. To enjoy the intimate fellowship and care of the shepherd we need to

    pass through the valley.

    2. We get refreshed from the pure streams while passing through the

    valleys.

    3. Richest feed is available in the valley.

    4. To humble us for spiritual maturity.

    1. To enjoy the intimate fellowship Sheep has a great desire to go to the 'mountain top' to enjoy

the intimate fellowship of the shepherd. But it has to pass through the valleys Journey is extremely difficult Storms, flood, rock slides, avalanches, poisonous plants,

predators, hail, snow, steep cleft etc.

But our shepherd is with us. Isa. 43:2,1Cor.10:13; Heb.4:14-15

I will not fear evil, for though art with me....."2. It is in the valleys our souls are refreshed

Here one finds refreshing waters all along the way Rivers, streams, springs and quiet pool etc. Thirsty flock get satisfied here It is from here shepherd collects smooth stones to kill wild

    beasts 1sam.17:40

These experiences help us to comfort others. 2Cor.1:3-4.2Cor.12:9

    3. Richest feed is available in the valleys Richest and best forage (food) are found in the valleys. Essential for feeding mother (Ewe) and Lamb. Here Ewe teaches lamb the way to the mountain top. It is a dangerous way. Deut.8:2-6; 107:7;119:71, 67 Still shepherd knows it is the best way to take his sheep to

    'table mount'.

    4. To humble us for spiritual maturity Higher you go stronger the wind Sudden winds even can blow the sheep into the valleys Shepherd should know the direction of the winds as he takes

    them to the top

Sheep will become strong and sturdy as it passes through thevalley

I will fear no evil because..... Det.11:12 Paul's spiritual Maturity

AD 57 Paul said 'least among the Apostle' 1Cor.15:9 A D 60. He said 'least among the saints' Ep.3:8 A D 65. He said ' chief among the sinners 1 Tim1:15

It's in the valleys I grow (Poem)

Sometimes life seems hard to bear. Full of sorrow, trouble and woe.

It's then I have to remember. That it's in the valleys I grow.

If always stayed on the mountain top. And never experienced pain.

I would never appreciate God's love. And would be living in vain

I have so much to learn, and my growth is very slow,

Sometimes I need the mountaintops, But it's in the valleys I grow

I do not always understand why things happen as they do.

But I am very sure of one thing. My Lord will see me through.

My little valleys are nothing. When I picture Christ on the cross.

He went through the valley of death. His victory was Satan's loss

Forgive me Lord, for complaining. When I am feeling so low.

Just give me gentle reminder. That it's in the valleys I grow

Continue to strengthen me, Lord. And use my life each day.

To share your love with others. And help them find their way.

Thank you for valleys, Lord. For this one thing I know.

The mountaintops are glorious. But it's in the valleys I grow.

    Table Mountain

In summer shepherd leads the sheeptowards table land - mountain top

Common in western United States andSouthern Europe and is called 'Mesas'

'Mesas' is a Spanish word for table Prepares the Table Land....

Before summer shepherd goes to survey the land - Jn.10:3-4 He distributes salt and minerals at strategic places. Identifies site for his camp Determines the carrying capacity of the land that helps to decide

    grazing pattern

He removes poisonous weeds if any He keeps eye on predators

Wild beasts cunningly come to snatch the sheep Beasts like wolf, bear, lion etc. We need to be careful, be closer to the shepherd Eg. Peter, Lord warned him, yet he walked afar off. Lk.22:31-

    32,54-62

We should not be ignorant of his devices 2 Cor.2:11 He comes some time like a roaring Lion or like an angel of light 1

Satan some times takes us to the top of the mountain - materialprosperity. Matt. 4:8-10

Some times he may allow us to reach the pinnacle of temple -spiritual progress. Matt.4:5-6

We need to be extremely careful of his tactics 2 Cor.2:11 Prepared Table is the symbol of His love

Lord's Table reminds the love of the good shepherd. Lord's Table and LORD's Supper

The Lords supper (I Cor 11:20) It is Lords and not ours He invited us to the supper

Observed in the evening (Acts 10:7) . Supper is defined as themost important meal of the day. (To Indians lunch and for

    Europeans dinner)

So it is not necessary to be in the evening . Early church did itbecause of social pressure- slaves working

It is different from Lords table. I Cor 10:21 Lords table and Lords supper

    Both are different

    What God Has Promised

    God hath not promised

    Skies always blue

    Flower-strewn pathways

    All our lives through.

    God hath not promised

    Sun without rain

    Joy without sorrow
