DIVISION IN EUKARYOTESTwo types of Cell Division for eukaryotes:Mitosis and Meiosis

Page 3: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

MITOSIS (DIVISION OF THE NUCLEUS) Occurs in organisms undergoing

growth, development, and repair One cell division Makes 2 new cells identical to the original

cell Makes somatic cells Makes diploid cell (2n)

Page 4: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

MEIOSISMeiosis (gamete production) = Occurs during the reproduction of gametes (sex cells) Two cell divisions makes 4 new cells with half the

genetic material of the original Makes sex cells Makes haploid cells (n)

CELL CYCLECell Cycle = A repeating cycle of events in the life of a cell

Page 7: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

CELL CYCLEInterphase = the period between cell divisions (made of 3 phases)

Page 8: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

CELL CYCLEInterphase = the period between cell divisions (made of 3 phases)

1) G1 = the growth phase, a new cell grows to mature size

2) S = DNA is copied or synthesized to prepare for division

3) G2 = the time when the cell prepares for division

Page 9: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

CELL CYCLEOptional**) G0 = following G1 a cell can exit the cell cycle and prevent further cell division

• Ex/ Developed nerve cells enter G0 so nerve cells can not divide to repair damage

MITOSIS PHASESMitosis divides the cell’s nucleus in four phases.

1. Prophase2. Metaphase3. Anaphase4. Telophase

Page 11: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

MITOSIS PHASES1. Prophase: Chromosomes condense, nucleus breaks down, and spindle fibers form

Page 12: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

MITOSIS PHASES2. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell

Page 13: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

MITOSIS PHASES3. Anaphase: sister chromatids separate to

opposite sides of the cell.

Page 14: Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

MITOSIS PHASES4. Telophase: The new nuclei form, spindle fibers

break down, and chromosomes begin to uncoil.
