and Pam when Stan was granted the major club award “Service Above Self” for his 41 years of dedicated service to Rotary. September 23 we could thanks to Phil Giurlani, have an informal “Wine and Cheese” in honor of the Governor. My very special gratitude to Rick, Joann and Alan Sprenkel who in the absence of the regular staff at Teresa’s where present everywhere needed for the event. We might consider nominating Rick “Bartender of the Year”. We welcomed members from Ione and Up-Country Rotary Clubs and even had the pleasure to have our ex-change student Leopold. In spite of the weak frequency of our club we had a great time and all had the oppor-tunity to chat informally with our dynamic District Governor. Let’s GO TEAM VIRUS. Our Interact Club is taking shape, Adelaide Cahill, our former RYLA student sent me an e-mail sorry she could not help me with the Rotary Room set-up for their meeting on Monday 9/28 but indicated two of her friends Kyle Welche and D’lynn Zagami who offered to help. Bravo Interact!

MEMBERSHIP NEWS On Sunday, Oct. 4, critically acclaimed songwriter Damon Wyckoff of Forever

Goldrush and award-winning journalist Scott Thomas Anderson, author of Shadow People, will team-up for an acoustic performance/spoken-word event at Sutter Creek Provisions tap house. Wyckoff and Anderson both grew

up in Amador County, and both are known for exploring the hard, hand-to-mouth life that defines rural communities in the West. Beginning at 4 p.m., the two will take turns sharing the stage as Wyckoff unveils songs from his upcoming solo album and Anderson reads passages from his new book, The Cutting-Four-piece, and discusses working behind the scenes at the Angola Prison Rodeo. There is no cover charge for this event. Sutter Creek Provisions is owned by locals Darin and Casey Sexton. The tap house has been making a name for itself as having one of the best beer selections in the entire Mother Lode. Casey Sexton is also a noted aficionado of Roots-Americana music, hosting the weekly Highway 49 Radio Show on KVGC. The Shadows on the Range show is meant to feel like a party thrown by Cormac McCarthy, Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt’s dy-ing liver. Sutter Creek Provisions is located at 78 Main Street, Sutter Creek.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING SOLAR COOKING PROGRAM I have been asked to provide solar cookers for the fire victims in Calaveras but I think it is premature. They don’t know where to start, don’t know where they are going to live and if they have no instructions will not know how to use the solar cookers. Many victims will probably end up in trailers, in that case the rocket stoves and hay baskets will be an inexpensive, practical way to cook their food. What I am going to do is start classes to make the solar cookers, beginning on Oc-tober 9 at the Calaveras Health and Human Service Agency in San Andreas. The West Calaveras Rotary Club of Valley Springs asked me to do a demonstration during their "Oktober Fest" on 10/17. The weekend of 3 and 4 October, two couples of Rotarians from Fresno will be visiting our region. They have information and a video about the different modalities of Rocket Stoves and would have liked to do a brief presentation at our club meeting. But they will have to leave on Monday having to work on Tuesday. In order to have the opportunity to see the presentation without interfering with our Bowl-a-Thon, I offered to have a session at our, now official, Rotary Room (former Thomi’s small banquet space) Sunday October 4 at 10:30 AM. I will provide coffee, cake and cookies and hope several of our members will attend.

These Rotarians from Fresno have been our mentors when we started the Solar Cook-ing, they received is very well at their club in Fresno and even came to our house in order to instruct us before we started. I really want to make the feel welcome at Rotary Jackson
