Dear Beach Parents, So what makes a middle school great? As I was walking around today during 5th hour, it was exciting to see the depth of experiences that we have for our students. The true middle school philosophy is a strong academic core with a variety of enrichment and elective opportunities. Students were having fun and learning hands onexperiences in Tech, Art, Spanish, PE, Band, Orchester and Choir filling the hall with their music . So whats on the horizon? February brings about many great opportunities for our students. On Monday, February 3, eighth grade parents will be meeting at the CHS for next years scheduling infor- mation and our 8th graders will be completing their schedules for next year. They will also meet with the high school counselors and admin- istration. Sixth and seventh graders will make their elective choices in late February- yes they are growing up. We have closed out our 7th grade Little Caesar Pizza Kit fundraiser and pizza kit pick up day is Tuesday, February 18 between. When I am asked whats the best way to help my student be successful at BMS, my response is always—stay involved. Check- ing Twitter and PowerSchool daily, following the web page announce- ments, Google Calendar, Facebook page and communicating with staff is the best policy. Also, be sure to check our new Chelsea School Districts website. We are here to support your student(s) in having a memorable "middle school experience". As always please reach out if you are in need of any help or assistance. “Counselor’s Corner”

“When Your Teen Needs Help”

All children and teens experience problems and difficult times during transitions as a normal phase of devel-opment throughout their lives. It can sometimes be difficult for a parent to know if their teen’s problem is part of a normal phase and will go away as the teen moves on or if the problem requires professional help. If you have exhausted all the usual parental efforts and resources (talking with the teen; setting limits in a firm, loving way; problem-solving and trying alternatives; consulting with the school) to address the problem and you are still concerned, consider the following: 1. Is my teen experiencing pro-

longed and intense discomfort?

Are they stuck in a way of feeling or behaving that he/she doesn’t like or is causing him/her pain? The behav-ior could range from very disruptive or aggressive to extreme withdrawal. 2. Do you know what is causing the behavior?

Why is your teen failing to adapt

or move through this transition? What will happen if he/she responds to other situations in this same way? 3. How long has this problem oc-curred and how intense is it?

Do any of the strategies you or

the school have tried make an im-pact? Is the teen’s response totally out of proportion to the situation?

4. Is your teen’s problem af-fecting other areas of her/his de-velopment including: school, rela-tionships, eating and/or sleeping habits, fears?

Is this problem interfering with

their ability to feel good about her-self (positive self-esteem), learn new skills, and/or handle other areas of her life? 5. Are there other issues affecting your teen at this time? Has your teen experienced a loss, trauma, divorce or other stressful event that has intensified the prob-lem you are now dealing with? Was the problem different before this stressful event? 6. Is the family affected by the teen’s problem? Parents and siblings may feel stressed by dealing with the de-mands or disruptive behavior of the teen experiencing the problem. Par-ents may disagree about how to deal with the teen or how to address the problem. 7. If your teen is talking or writing about harming her/himself (suicide, cutting), take this issue seriously and get help. It is important to get a pro-fessional evaluation of how at-risk your teen is and implement measures to keep your teen safe. Take your teen to their doctor or the nearest emergency room. It’s important to evaluate a spe-cific problem in context before mak-ing decisions about your teen’s emotional health and whether to consult a professional. If problems persist or seem to intensify over a period of time, despite your best

efforts, you may want to consult a pro-fessional for help. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Beach Counseling Department: Dennis Strzyzewski, Counselor (ext. 2013), Marie Lombar-do, Counselor (ext. 2303), Mara Kelly, Social Worker (ext. 2015) or Claire Talarico, Psychologist (ext. 2016) at 433-2202.

CHS Marching Band

Camp August 3-8, 2020

The Chelsea High School Bands are excited to welcome the Class of 2024 our current 8th Grade Band Members and their families!

Plans are already under-way for the 2020-2021 Chelsea High School Bands. Marching Band Camp is scheduled to take place the week of August 3-8, 2019. We will meet all new mem-bers on Saturday August 1 for an orientation day, begin camp with the full Band on Aug. 3, and end the week with our annual car wash fundraiser scheduled to take place on Saturday August 9, 2020. There shouldn’t be any school conflicts with these dates, as all other fall sport seasons are scheduled to start after band camp. If anyone has questions or concerns regarding band camp please con-tact Mr. Catherman at rcather-

[email protected], or by phone at 433-2201 ext. 1404.

The color guard and drum line will begin preparations later this spring, with clinics/rehearsals taking place in May and early-June. Summer rehearsals for both the per-cussion/drum line and color guard are tentatively scheduled for July 27-31, 2020.

All high school band mem-bers will receive detailed infor-mation as each event nears this spring, and will receive a mailing this summer with detailed infor-mation including a schedule for band camp. The 2020 Bulldog Marching Band will plan our prem-ier performances in the Chelsea Fair Parade and our first home football game in August. Additional perfor-mance dates will be issued as soon as the calendar is finalized this next spring.

Please visit the Chelsea H.S. Bands web-page by going to www.chelsea.k12.mi.us, then se-lecting “Chelsea High School”, “Music”, and then Mr. Catherman’s name. This page will be updated periodically this winter and spring with rehearsal and performance dates. You can also follow the Chelsea Bands on Twitter @ChelseaHSbands.

Beach Choir News For the 7th consecutive year, BMS Choirs are proud to announce that we had students selected to perform with the State Honor's Choir! Four of our BMS State Honors Choir students represented the CSD beautifully at Michigan Music Confer-ence in Grand Rapids on January 16th. The select ensemble performed for hundreds of music educators from all over state at the grand DeVos Perfor-mance Hall. We could not be more proud of these hard-working, talented musicians! The Beach Choirs Festival Concert, featuring students in the 6th-8th grades, is Thursday, February 20, at CHS. Stu-dents should report to the HS orchestra room at 6:30 PM, dressed in uniform. The concert is at 7 PM and will feature the 6th Grade Choir, BMS Honor's Choir students, and the 7th and 8th Grade Choirs. Our 7th and 8th Grade District Cho-ral Festival is on Friday, March 6, at a location still to be determined. We are hoping for a morning time however we do not know that yet. We will take a school bus and will likely stop for a bite to eat on our return trip. We need chaperones! If you can join us, please email Ms. Miller.
