St. Kieran Catholic Church The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 6, 2021 The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the LORD. — Psalm 116:13 Notes from Fr. John T oday the Church celebrates the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. At the Last supper Jesus spoke of the sacrifice he was going to endure. He told his disciples that he would die for them. Jesus’ Body and Blood would become the saving sacrament of the Church. I am not sure the Disciples understood him that evening, but soon it all became evident in his crucifixion. But the crucifixion was not the end. This feast really celebrates the Church as the Body and Blood of Christ. Through the Eucharist, Jesus feeds us and strengthens us for his mission. When we receive the Eucharist, we become the living Body of Christ in the world. Too often we think God is going to handle all our problems, but as the Body of Christ we are each called to make the world a better place for all people. This is the call for all Christians. So today let us all celebrate as the Body of Christ! Today is also the graduation for St. Agnes Catholic School. This year will be etched in my heart for a long time, as both the eighth-grade students and I prepare to say goodbye and move on. St. Agnes school is a special place and I have been proud to be a part of its success. I told the eighth graders it brings us great joy to hear of their achievements and success. For over 110 years we have sent students out into the world, and they have changed the world. St. Agnes is also a home to come back to when things aren’t perfect. It is a place to reconnect and find refuge when it is needed. Please pray for our gradu- ates this week and all those who have graduated from our local public and private schools. Go get em class of 2021!!!! Registration is ongoing for the next school year at St. Agnes. During the pandemic while many private schools were shrinking, St. Agnes actually grew. We believe that the 2021-2022 school year will again experience growth. Many classes are reaching their capacity and we may actually have to add some classrooms. That is a testament to Mr. Lungaro, our principal, and his faculty and staff. They are the heart of St. Agnes. Our parents and students are the soul of the school. Together they all are the Body of Christ. If you are interested in St. Agnes for your children or grandchildren, please give Karen Hamilton our school secretary a call at 708-756-2333. Karen can arrange a tour of the school and give out information as you need it. Go Wildcats! Finally, I would like to give a big thanks to the school children and parents, as well as the school staff for the wonderful gifts they gave me as I near the end of my time in the parish. A picture was commissioned from one of our local artists, MariKay Witlock and I look forward to hanging it in my new office. Your gifts also will help me in continuing my gardening hobby. I was checking out the backyard at St. Juliana and it will need some tender loving care. Again, thank you for your generosity. Well for twenty-five years I have been writing a weekly article for the bulletin. You are probably tired of hearing my news. In two weeks, I’ll be signing off. Till then we have to celebrate all the good times and memories we have shared. Always know a part of my heart will stay with you all! TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you (Exodus 24:3-8). Notes from Father Tom

Page 2 June 6, 2021

I t is hard to celebrate this Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ without having the opportunity to gather together at our familiar celebration of the Mass. We are gradually getting there and our safety precautions are allowing more people to return to our shared worship experience.

The physicalness of our coming together is meant to help us remember; to eat and drink together is to see and remain in the presence of the risen Christ that is with us always. Believing in this ‘real presence’ means seeing Christ present in you and in me – in the choices that we make and in the lives that we live and in those graced moments when we experience God in the love we bring to others and in the love others bring to us. Our faith is based upon the lives of those who really did bring the truth of God’s and Jesus’ love to us. They have been sacraments of Divine love and the embodiment of Christ’s presence for us and have nourished us with that love. Parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, health care workers and first responders who have helped us and sacrificed for us in these difficult times – witnesses all and real presence all. Remember their laughter, beauty, searching and devotion to truth, readiness for self-sacrifice, courage in the face of the hard times in life and realize how they continue to feed our souls. The living Communion of Saints is with us every time we gather in Christ’s name, even when it happens to be by YouTube or live streaming. Our actual gathering together for Mass is to be one with all those whose truth of life have been sacramental for us. Our caring enough to be there with and for others is to commit our lives to feed others with our lives as we have been fed; to drink in the ‘real presence’ of God with us even when life is less than easy. Now more than ever we need to do this. Christ comes for you and for others as we live and love and reach out into our world with the power of God’s Spirt alive in us; recognize and reverence this presence today and always. Father Tom K.
