Notes for Photographers on the images in this book This tome took several years to compile and I have used a variety of equipment to capture the images shown within. Including: Nikon D90 (APS C) and D610 (Full Frame), Fuji XT-1, X-Pro 1 and X100t (all APS C). My preference for using daylight over Flash or Studio equipment (despite having my own Studio at the time) shall soon become obvious!

Taken using a 24” reflector to bounce the light from a window directly in front of the model APS C 50mm 1/200 sec f1.8 ISO 800
Another window shot, this time at the model’s feet partially blocked by a clumsy photographer leaning over to take the shot whilst trying not to look like a pervert Full Frame 50mm 1/800 sec f1.8 ISO 800
This window thing is monotonous. I’m sorry. Next time I’ll shoot images lit by the death of a star going nova or by a nuclear blast just over the horizon. APS C 38mm 1/100 sec f2.8 ISO 800
A photograph of a photograph! The original was taken using a Fuji Instax Mini using the light from the Standard Lamp just visible in the image
Female readers don’t care about the window behind my head. They’re busy hating Emma for having boobs that stay put when she lies down… APS C 50mm 1/100 sec f4 ISO 200
Taken using 2 softbox equipped Studio Flash heads, one directly either side of the model. The left light set 2 stops higher than the right. Taken using 2 studio flash heads either side of me in the “butterfly” position, each aiming slightly down at angles to the model Full Frame 62mm 1/200 sec f11 ISO 200
Look; my first book was called “Windows and Doorways” for a reason, ok? APS C 27mm 1/200 sec f4 ISO 400
And just for a change an image taken using light from a window to the model’s left and slightly to her rear (sorry about that) Full Frame 70mm 1/250 sec f4 ISO 560 because my hand slipped
You get a lovely soft, diffuse light from a window. I must try it sometime…. APS C 44mm 1/100 sec f4 ISO 400
Nope, no windows here. Just a 500w Halogen DIY Worklight to the right at just below shoulder height. A weird thing to use but gives lovely sharp, angular shadows. Not really enough light from just one light for an APS C camera though. APS C 44mm 1/100 sec f/4 ISO 400
Taken below a window – STOP YAWNING AT THE BACK OF CLASS Full Frame 70mm 1/60 f5 ISO 400
Taken using 2x 500w Halogen DIY Worklights to the right of the image, one at shoulder height, one at ankle height. No windows. Yay! APS C 40mm 1/100 sec f4 ISO 500
It’s like this. when I took the first few images for this book I didn’t know much about Flash so I used windows because I could see what I was taking. I’m sorry, ok? APS C 35mm 1/100 sec f1.8 ISO 200
Taken using just the bathroom light and a cranked ISO with my beloved Nikon 50mm f 1.8 Full Frame 50mm 1/50 sec f4 ISO 800
Oh look, a window. There’s a surprise APS C 27mm 1/160 sec f5 ISO 400

Taken next to a window at the model’s feet APS C 30mm 1/200 sec f4 ISO 400
Just the window and a 2ft white reflector again. But you already guessed that…. APS C
50mm 1/200 sec f1.8 ISO 100
Taken using two softbox equipped Studio flash heads either side of the camera. No windows were harmed in the making of this image Full Frame 50mm 1/200 sec f9 ISO200
Taken using two Flashguns off camera bouncing the light off the walls & ceiling to minimise shadows. Known as “The dreadful duvet pic” APS C 30mm 1/200 sec f11 ISO 100
W…w…w… I can’t bring myself to say it. APS C 27mm 1/200 f4 ISO 200

Taken using 2 DIY 500w Halogen work lights at head and waist height to the right of the image APS C 35mm 1/250 sec f4 ISO 400

Taken using 2 500w DIY work lights at head and waist height to the model on the right of the image APS C 38mm 1/125 sec f4 ISO 400

Taken using the light from the window to the right of the image APS C 18mm 1/160 sec f2.8 ISO 200
The lighting in this shot is top secret. I could tell you but then I’d have to kill you. Or you could spot the window in the image…
APS C 23mm 1/200 sec f2.8 ISO 200
Natural light yet again – this time with the model lying down directly in front of the window about 5 feet away. The close focussing of the XT-1 is a joy. APS C 39mm 1/100 sec f3.6 ISO 640
Taken using just the light from the window above the model reflected off white walls Full Frame 58mm 1/50 sec f4 ISO 800 -1 EV Exposure Compensation
Another white room, another window above the model’s head. Are you noticing a pattern here? This time there’s a daylight balanced fluorescent light to my left to balance the light though. APS C 24mm 1/100 sec f4 ISO 400
Playing in front of a window again. What will the neighbours think? APS C 33mm 1/70 sec f8 ISO 3200
This one is a fun cheat. I shot the same girl after a 4 year gap and she loved the original pic so we recreated it. Different window, different bed, different camera, same model. Now 4 pages apart. Full Frame 28mm 1/125 sec f4 ISO 800
Same window, same bed, different model APS C 30mm 1/80 sec f4 ISO 800
Shot using the light from two incandescent bedside lamps and a very forgiving camera. APS C – my beloved Fuji X100T 23mm 1/6 sec f8 ISO 800
Really? Mark, get away from bloody windows! APS C 24mm 1/100 sec f4 ISO 400
Shot using just the light from the double aspect windows, the second behind me Full Frame 50mm 1/200 sec f4 ISO 200
Just a window again, however I used a 2 stop ND grad slanted to darken her face. Full Frame 50mm 1/230 sec f4 ISO 800 -0.3EV Exposure compensation
Taken using 2 softbox equipped Studio Flash heads set to their lowest power, one directly either side of the model Full Frame 38mm 1/500 sec f2.8 ISO 200
Taken using the light from a window directly behind me APS C 29mm 1/80 sec f13 ISO 3200
I know it’s a bathroom but believe it or not there’s a lovely big window just the other side of the model. Sorry. Full Frame 40mm 1/320 sec f4 ISO 800
The double aspect windows again. Taken a split second before my cat arrived to disrupt proceedings and give us a hilarious photo. Have a look at my Flickr or Instagram pages to see it. I used a relatively long shutter speed to capture the vibrations of the wand. APS C 105mm 1 sec f11 ISO 200 – thank goodness for Fuji image stabilised lenses
Taken using 2 fluorescent continuous studio lights; one directly above me, the other off to my left Full Frame 38mm 1/200 sec f9 ISO 200
Admit it, you’d be upset if I didn’t finish with a window-lit image wouldn’t you? This one is quite small and to the left of the image Full Frame 42mm 1/160 sec f4 ISO 800
