    First AmendmentFreedom of Speech,Religion; separation of

    Church and State:

    Congress shall make no

    law respecting anestablishment of religion,or prohibiting the freeexercise thereof; orabridging the freedom of

    speech, or of the press;or the right of the peoplepeaceably to assemble,and to petition theGovernment for aredress of grievances.

    Second AmendmentRight to Bear Arms,form a Military:

    A well regulated

    Militia, beingnecessary to thesecurity of a freeState, the right of

    the people to keepand bear Arms, shallnot be infringed.

    Third AmendmentNo Quartering:

    No Soldier shall, intime of peace be

    quartered in anyhouse, without theconsent of theOwner, nor in time of

    war, but in a mannerto be prescribed bylaw.

    Fourth AmendmentNo Unreasonable Searchand Seizure:

    The right of the people tobe secure in their persons,

    houses, papers, andeffects, againstunreasonable searches andseizures, shall not beviolated, and no Warrantsshall issue, but upon

    probable cause, supportedby Oath or affirmation, andparticularly describing theplace to be searched, andthe persons or things to beseized.

    Fifth AmendmentDue Process, No DoubleJeopardy and No Self-incrimination:

    No person shall be held toanswer for a capital, or otherwiseinfamous crime, unless on apresentment or indictment of aGrand Jury, except in casesarising in the land or navalforces, or in the Militia, when inactual service in time of War orpublic danger; nor shall anyperson be subject for the sameoffence to be twice put injeopardy of life or limb; nor shallbe compelled in any criminalcase to be a witness againsthimself, nor be deprived of life,liberty, or property, without dueprocess of law; nor shall privateproperty be taken for public use,without just compensation.

    Sixth AmendmentRight to a Fair and Speedy Trial;Rights of the Accused

    In all criminal prosecutions, the

    accused shall enjoy the right to aspeedy and public trial, by an

    impartial jury of the State anddistrict wherein the crime shallhave been committed, whichdistrict shall have beenpreviously ascertained by law,and to be informed of the natureand cause of the accusation; to

    be confronted with the witnessesagainst him; to have compulsoryprocess for obtaining witnessesin his favor, and to have theAssistance of Counsel for hisdefense.

    Seventh AmendmentTrial by Jury in CivilCases (Lawsuits)

    In Suits at common law,where the value in

    controversy shall exceedtwenty dollars, the rightof trial by jury shall bepreserved, and no facttried by a jury, shall be

    otherwise re-examinedin any Court of theUnited States, thanaccording to the rules ofthe common law.

    Eighth AmendmentNo Cruel or UnusualPunishment

    Excessive bail shall notbe required, nor

    excessive fines imposed,nor cruel and unusualpunishments inflicted.

    Ninth AmendmentRights Reserved to thePeople

    The enumeration in theConstitution, of certain

    rights, shall not beconstrued to deny ordisparage others retainedby the people.

    Peoples rights that may not

    be spelled out in theConstitution are stillprotected, unless a lawprohibits such behavior.

    Rights Reserved to theStates

    The powers not delegatedto the United States by the

    Constitution, nor prohibitedby it to the States, arereserved to the Statesrespectively, or to thepeople.

    For example, themaintenance of roads, and(eventually) publiceducation.
