I’m a good person who doesn’t deserve this.” Statements like this are due to the common belief that God always causes the righteous to prosper and the wicked to suffer. This philosophy was present even in Jesus’ day, Luke 13:1-5. However, this doctrine is of the devil. He asked God, "Does Job fear God for nothing?” Job 1:9 Eliphaz, Job’s friend, suggested he should take pleasure in God’s way because God would take up his cause and see to it that no evil would come to him, job 5:17-27. The inspired writer tells us Job was “blameless and upright, and one who feared God.” He also “was the greatest of all the people of the East.” God knew his character, even reporting it to Satan, Job 1:13-22.God knew he remained faithful, but still allowed him to suffer even more, Job 2:3, 7-8, 13. Paul was beaten, accursed, and ship wrecked, even though he was an apostle, 2 Corinthians 11:23-27. Even Jesus was crucified by his enemies. It is very clear that good people do suffer. There are lessons we learn from this though. First of all, life is short, Job 9:25-26, James 4:13-17. Second, we must reject the sinful suggestions of even those who are close to us, Job 2:10, Matthew 16:21-23. Thirdly, we should worship and pray when facing life’s tragedy test, Job 1:20, Matthew 26:36-42. Fourth, don’t forget that God cares for you, Matthew 10:29-31, 1 Peter 5:6-7. Fifth, realize even extended suffering will come to an end, 2 Corinthians 4:16-18. Sixth, other members of the Lord’s body are here to help you, 1 Corinthians 12:25-26, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4.
