Week 6, Term One 2016 Celebrating Achievement Last Thursday evening we hosted William Pike who officially launched the William Pike Challenge at Karaka School. William shared his story of overcoming adversity and how from this, the WP Challenge was born. Those who attended described the story as inspirational and the programme as being a fantastic opportunity for our students to grow in self confidence and become positive contributors to the community. We would like to thank Head and Deputy Girls Bethany S and Zoe J who introduced William to the stage and Head and Deputy Boys Josh P and George H for officially thanking him at the conclusion of his presentation. Well done to you all - your first official engagement went very smoothly and we were proud of how you spoke with confidence! Congratulations also to those who represented our school at the ECCS swimming sports last week. A superbly organised event and amongst the competition, much fun was had by all. Please see results on the following page. Professional learning Communities 3 way conferences are booked for Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th April (Week 10). School will close early on the Wednesday at 12.20pm to ensure we have enough spaces to meet with you all. The booking system will be the online one we trialled successfully last year. More details to follow in next weeks newsletter…. Reminder Life Skills (Bible) will recommence next Thursday. The classes look closely at the focus virtue and uses stories from the bible to illustrate these. This programme runs between 9 and 9.30am each Thursday morning. Should you wish that your child not attend these Life Skills (Bible) classes, an alternative programme is in place. To opt in to the alternative programme you will need to email the office [email protected] and inform us of this decision. Please state your child/s name/s and room/s within the email. Reminders

Much More Ice Blocks March—on sale Thursdays not Fridays in March

Bus—Please let your child know in the morning before school whether they are on the

bus or not. This especially applies to junior students—writing a “B” for bus on their hand

sometimes helps.

End of Day— Please pick your children up on time. School finishes at 2.45pm and the

office closes at 3.00pm. Teachers may have meetings after school and are therefore

unable to supervise those children that have not been picked up on time.

ICAS Exams—Entry forms and fees are to be handed into the office by 24th March.

Signing in and out—Please remember to call into the office to sign in or out as the case

may be i.e. picking children up for appointments and when they come back, dropping off

late (where your child needs to get a late pass), visiting the school for any reason. Even

if it is near the end of the day (and you have asked your child to come out on the bus

bell) they MUST be signed out. This is a Health and Safety requirement.

Nits—Just a reminder at this time of the year, to please check your child’s hair regularly.

Make sure you brush hair regularly and long hair is tied up. Also check everyone in the

household. Lice die of old age at around 40 days, unless they are killed before that. A

female may have laid 100 eggs by then!!! The office has Head Lice Information sheets if

you require one.

BOT ELECTIONS COMING UP SOON

We are looking for trustees who are

focused on supporting professional

leadership, teaching and learning and

the ongoing improvement of student

achievement.

IS THIS YOU!

Contact Sarah Hynds or Dave

Jamieson (current Board chairperson)

or visit the office to pick up A Parents’

Guide to the Role of the Board of

Trustees booklet.

Thank You

Many thanks to Mr Monteith for supplying the Junior team with 50 small sheets of MDF that have been turned into blackboards. Your support is much appreciated. Thank you also for the other generous offers of help we received.

PTA CARPARK SILENT AUCTION

Congratulations to the winner of the silent

auction. Please note that they have an

allocated car parking space for the rest of

this term. Please do not park in their spot!

William Pike Launch

We were lucky enough to have William Pike at Karaka School. He told all the William Pike participants and friends and family about his gripping story on Mt Ruapehu where he lost his right leg due to a lahar on the 25th of September 2007. This possibly fatal accident brought William’s family and friends closer together and inspired him to pursue his dreams of the outdoors further.

He was fond of the saying ‘All passion and no limits’. He took this quote up as his own and incorporated it into his classroom as he was a school teacher at Murrays Bay school for four years. We learnt to never give in and to not let anyone tell you differently. His story has inspired us to achieve our goals and to stick to the values of our school and his values (Courage, Teamwork, Resilience, Compassion, Pride and Enthusiasm). William Pike was extremely motivating and taught us to treat every day as a good day. We thank William Pike Trust for making this opportunity a reality for Karaka Schools Intermediate students now and in the future. Also thanks to our generous sponsors Dominion Constructors for the donation that has allowed so many of us to participate in the William Pike Challenge.
