This Programming notes is intended to used in conjunction with the EPSON ESC/PReference Manual, November 1994.

    1. Introducing the EPSON Stylus COLOR 1520, EPSON Stylus COLOR 800, EPSONSTYLUS COLOR 600, and EPSON Stylus COLOR 400

This is a brief summary of four new EPSON color inkjet printers. This Programming Note(revision 3) applies to the following printers:

International Model Name Japan Model NameEPSON Stylus COLOR 400 MJ-830CEPSON Stylus COLOR 600 N/AEPSON Stylus COLOR 800 MJ-930CEPSON Stylus COLOR 1520 MJ-6000C

EPSON has eliminated the 3-Color inkjet printers category by introducing the EPSON Stylus

COLOR 400. The Stylus COLOR 400 will be the lowest cost 4-color printer available in the lineof the EPSON Stylus COLOR Series. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 600 and EPSON StylusCOLOR 800 are the successors to the EPSON Stylus COLOR 500 and the EPSON Stylus Pro,respectively. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 1520 is the wide carriage printer version of the StylusCOLOR 800 that support up to A2 and US-C paper sizes (13.6 inch printable width). Thisprinter also has a tractor feed unit built-in. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 400, EPSON StylusCOLOR 800 are sold worldwide, currently. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 600 is also availableworldwide, except in Japan. The Stylus COLOR 1520 is current sold in Japan and Europe, but itwill not be available in America until summer 1997.

The EPSON Stylus COLOR 400 is an ESC/P Raster printer and has only parallel port interface. An ESC/P Raster printer does not support any fonts and font commands. The Stylus COLOR400 can print up to 720x720 dpi, while the EPSON Stylus COLOR 600, 800 and 1520 can printup to 1440x720 dpi. Both Parallel and Mac serial interface are available for these three printers. In addition, optional EPSON Type B Interface adapter board is also available for the EPSONStylus COLOR 800 and 1520.

Although, the EPSON Stylus COLOR 600, 800 and 1520 can print up to 1440x720, the EPSONdeveloped driver technique used to achieve this printing mode is proprietary. There is noinformation available for ISVs driver development, currently. However, two new ESC/P2commands associated with this printing mode, ESC ( \ and ESC ( s, are provided in thisProgramming Notes for references.

All four printers offer both new print heads and ink formulation that improve the print qualitysignificantly over their predecessors. The same new Cyan, Magenta &Yellow ink cartridges areused in all four printers. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 400 and 600 utilize the same black ink cartridge as the EPSON Stylus COLOR 500, While the EPSON Stylus COLOR 800 and 1520use a new black ink formulation and cartridge.

    4. Ink Density vs. Printing Mode

Tables 5 to 7 summarize the limitation of ink duty in the different print modes for the differentprinters. The recommended amount of ink varies when printing with one ink, two inks, or three

inks. The combination of two ink drops of either C, M or Y will produce Red, Green or Bluecolor, known as RGB. While the combination of three ink drops of C, M, Y, will produce acomposite Black. The ink duty to produce RGB & composite black is therefore reduced for eachC, M, Y to avoid color saturation. The ink duty values are recommended as a starting point, depending on the different halftone module you select, you may find that by adjusting thesevalues, the output quality can improve for your driver.

    6. Paper Feed Sequence

For the new printers, the Paper Feed Sequence is recommended. It can be set with the SNcommand after entering the EPSON Remote-Mode. The EPSON Remote Mode is a control

language for serial printer products. It allows various setting of the printer through the interface.

The paper feed sequence can be select as follows:

    Function:

    - Move the horizontal print position left or right from the current position, asspecified by the following formula:

    (horizontal position) = ((m2x256) + m1) / ((n2x256) + n1) + (current position)

    - n1, n2 show the unit of moving length as (1 / ((n2x256) + n1)) inch- m1, m2 show the moving length

Notes:- This command is depending on the printer model. EPSON Stylus COLOR 600,

800, 1520 only.- The printer ignores this command if it would move the print position outside the

printing area.- The EPSON Stylus COLOR 600, 800 & 1520 support only parameter of n1=160,

n2=5, this means the unit of move length is 1/1440 inch.
