Don’t Miss the Club Meeting The Wet Nose News a monthly publication of the St. Clairsville Ohio Kennel Club November, 2007 LuAnn Kennedy, Editor T he next club meeting will be held at the Ohio Valley Mall Community Room at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13th, 2007. There will be a special program for the evening entitled “Place Driven Plot” by club member and local author Isabel Harrar. We are told that club members will be able to participate in the program too! Isabel’s pen name is Jean Gillespie and she has just written her third book. Business meeting agenda is as follows: September match results, Christmas Party (Dec. 5th), and nominations for the January election. Please come and join us for a fun evening. SCOKC’s September Program and B-OB Match O n September 11th, Match Chair Bertie Prettyman gave a program that focused on the upcoming Sept. 29th B-OB match, and explained that a match is a great learning experience for dogs, enthusiasts, clubs and aspiring judges. Bertie brought samples of entry forms, judges sheets and ribbons and discussed the “nuts and bolts” of the match. She also ex- plained the registration process and those attending learned how to fill out entry forms for obedience and rally and breed/class and group forms for conformation. Stewarding was also discussed. Bertie Prettyman gives her thoughts on the match. I give my heartfelt thanks to everyone that helped in any way to make our match a success. I hate to list names, because I’m afraid of leaving out someone. Let’s see...there was Kay, who allowed us to use her wonderful facilities, and, along with Margie and LuAnn, did a great job of keeping me focused. Barb Farmer, a friend of Kay’s helped in the rings, Floyd Moore and his sisters provided the great concession stand. LuAnn did her usual great job with publicity (both newspaper articles and flyers), 50/50 raffle, AND a bang-up raffle. She, Bonnie, Sarah and Nicki prepared those lovely baskets on the raffle table, which was incredibly successful. Sarah’s granddaughter Abby helped draw raffle ticket numbers. Lisa Miller helped with registration and Vicki Turner was our ribbon chairperson. Cheryl Howells was there to help wherever she was needed, and brought along grandsons Cody and Nathan, who have always been great workers for us. Nathan took pictures of the match (to be posted later). Thanks go to Bill Sams for donat- ing his tack box to the club to sell. And of course, our thanks to “Stumpy” Donaldson, who we can always depend on to have our “stuff” where and when we need it. It was fun doing a match again, and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. There were a lot of new faces, and that makes it even better! Some of the many breeds attending the match were: Australian Shepherd, Basset Hound, Beagle, Briard, Brussels Griffon, Cairn Terrier, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Dalmatian, German Shepherd, German Shorthaired Pointer, Golden Retriever, Great Dane, Labrador Retriever, Miniature Pinscher, Miniature Schnauzer, Newfoundland, Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Rottweiler, Schipperke, Shih Tzu, Siberian Husky, Spinone, Standard Schnauzer, and Whippet.

Tick Removal

The best way to remove atick is to use tweezers to pluck

it out. What about the head, you ask? Well, apparently the toxins are all in the body and even ifthe head stays connected to the dog’s or person’sbody, it will not hurt to leave it, but if it bothers you, remove it. Eventually, the human or dog’s body willexcrete the head out on its own. The worst thing todo is to burn it, submerse it in any thing i.e. alcohol, nail polish remover or petroleum jelly, because thiswill only aggravate the tick which will cause it toregurgatate the toxins in its body and send them intothe skin of its host.

From the “Traveling Teacher”, Eloise Wolfson

Have Dog, Will Travel is still our motto! We have been on the road with our Children Living Safely with Dogs program.Powhatan Public Library was the site of a very successful outing that brought thirty kids plus a few parents. Vickie

Ventura and Peaches, Piper and I did the presentation, and it was a great success. That was a year ago, but it spawned aninvitation to do the program for the first grade at Powhatan Elementary School two weeks ago. What charming little peoplethose first graders are! Piper thought he was in Collie Heaven, and the little ones were interested, attentive and all smiles. Itwas a great experience.

Our next outing, two days later, was at Goldstar Kennel where Kay Moore had her group of eight high schoolers fromthe Joint Vocational School scheduled for learning before beginning to work at the kennel. We used Kay’s Golden RetrieverMillie as the teacher dog, and she was a gem! Kay followed up with an obedience demo which put smiles on all faces. Ienjoyed the older kids as well as I had the young’uns at Powhatan. The highschoolers are being accompanied by their teachersupervisor as they develop a routine at Goldstar. Millie was a star, and the kids were delighted.

We cannot remember exactly when we did a program for the Dolphins 4-H Club in Warwood, but we had a vividreminder when I received a Thank You note last week. When we were called about doing the program, the leader said shehad twenty plus “very energetic kids.” Hum! Kay and I mused over the description, but we figured it was worth a try. It waschaotic when we first walked into the meeting of twenty plus “very energetic kids” and three leaders. However, once seated inan adjacent room, the kids really settled in and were wonderfully attentive. Piper was his usual charming self, and Millie was avery sophisticated well-trained model of canine charm. Kay and Millie demonstrated the ten steps to CGC. We passed outcoloring books, CGC pamphlets and answered forty ‘leven questions and departed with smiles and chuckles about the wholeexperience. The thank you note is priceless. Perhaps you will have an opportunity to see it at a future meeting!
