From our Principal… From Our Principal…. Helping our students be great learners Learning is hard work! It takes us beyond our ‘comfort zone’ of something familiar and known into an area that can be new and unfamiliar. Our teachers work hard to plan and deliver learning that takes our students from where they are now further along their learning journey. For some of our students, this is a challenge that they embrace, you can almost see them ‘roll up their sleeves’ and get stuck into the learning, feeling a sense of excitement about learning something new. For some others of our students, new learning is not something that they embrace so readily and you/we might hear them say something like, “this is too hard … I can’t do this.” Our response to this is often something like, “you can’t do it yet”, and to encourage them to ‘have a go’, to keep practising, because that is how learning and mastery of new knowledge or skills will occur. There are a number of things that you can do to support our work here at school with your children – to help them to be a great learner: Recognise them for trying hard (not just for doing well) and celebrate their little successes Let your child know that you think that learning and school are important and that trying hard matters Talk with them about what’s happening at school. Ask them about activities, topics, what they are learning or what they found interesting or fun in their day Ask specific questions to out draw information – instead of ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions, try open questions that encourage discussion: - How do you think you went with your maths or reading today? - What was the most interesting thing you did today? - What was something you learned today? - What did you try hard at today? Try to help them to make connections between what they are learning at school and everyday life, such as practicing reading and counting at the shops Talk with them about times when you are a learner – when you have to persist at learning something new, especially when it is difficult for you. Learning is a lifelong activity, not just something that is done at school. This time of learning at school though, is a wonderful opportunity to equip our young people with the skills and mindset that they need to be lifelong learners and to have the future they deserve. Thank you for working with us to support them to be great learners. School Association news In our last newsletter, we sought nominations for Parent Member on the School Association Committee. I am pleased to announce that the following parents have been elected unopposed to these positions: Mandy Brown, Kirsty Crawford, Ben Cunningham, Bec Harrington, Angela Hawley, Chantal Innes, Rachel Kerrison and Corinne Leale. I congratulate each of these people on their election and thank them for their support of our school in this way. The Annual General Meeting of the School Association will be held next Tuesday, March 13 th , and the Committee will elect the four Executive Officer positions, Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer. I will announce the results of these elections in an upcoming newsletter. NORWOOD A reminder to those families who shop at our local IGA to please post your docket into the perspex box marked Norwood Primary School. 1% of the value of the ’posted’ receipts is donated to the school. Validation Forms

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SIGN ALL PERMISSIONS, DATE AND RETURN TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE EVEN IF NO CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE.

(In order for your child to attend excursions their form must be completed and returned.)

Can You Help the Early Years Team? Shhh! We aren't mentioning the "Easter" word yet but we are interested in having a visit from friendly rabbits or chicks over the next few weeks. Please see us if you can help. We would love to use these animal visits as a basis for art and oral language experiences. Lynette House, Alison Taylor and Melinda Williams

Kinder House Shhh! I haven't mentioned this to the children yet. We will be decorating uncracked hard boiled eggs on Thursday 29th March. If possible could you please send one along on the day. You could possibly Google how to boil an egg without cracking or piercing the shell. The children could be involved in the research closer to the time. Thank you, Lynette House

School Photo Day Wednesday 28th March

(Kinder Williams & Kinder Taylor - Thurs. 29th March)

Each student has their own unique code - please keep the envelope safe until photo day.

♦ Every student has received an envelope with their name, class and a barcode printed on the front to bring home for you to view photo selections available for purchase.

♦ All children will be photographed (for school records) regardless of placing orders so it is necessary to return each of these personal envelopes on photo day so your child/ren can be matched with their name and unique code. EACH CHILD MUST HAVE THEIR OWN ENVELOPE.

♦ Family photos will also be taken (after 3pm) – if you wish to have a family photo you will need to collect a special family photo order form from the office.

♦ Family photos need to be paid for on the day.

♦ Ordering online is the only way you can pay with credit cards and you must return your order envelope.

♦ Please ensure correct money is enclosed as no change is able to be given. Total payments for all your children can be placed in a single envelope of eldest child. Indicate this on each child’s returned envelope that this is where payment is.

♦ Selected group photos will also be taken.

♦ Please note that the style of the class photo is compilation style.

Excursion to Rupertswood Farm Crop Maze

Dear parents/carers On Tuesday 27th March our classes will be travelling by bus to Rupertswood Farm at Hagley. We will be using our mapping and problem-solving skills to negotiate the crop maze while solving riddles and looking for clues, learning about changes in farming and agri-tourism, and focusing on team building and the importance of exercise. All students should wear PE uniform and bring a hat, sunscreen, a jumper and a jacket in case of a change in the weather. In addition they will also need a packed recess, lunch and large drink. We respectfully ask that children do not bring umbrellas as they can become a safety issue.

As we require 1 adult per 5 students, we would be grateful if any parents are able to assist with our excursion. Could you please speak to your child’s teacher as soon as possible or notify them in writing. It is a requirement for all accompanying adults to have a current Working With Vulnerable People card. Jacqui Glen, Bec Barker, Claire Hill, Roslyn Faulkner, Amanda Summers and Amanda Horkings

Asthma Action Plans Any children who have an asthma diagnosis need to supply the school with a current Asthma Action Plan from your doctor. Thank you.

Can you sew? Would you be willing to help?

We would love a creative person to volunteer to make some more MYTERN mascot toys to support our work with emotional resilience. If you are interested in drawing up a pattern (using basic cartoon pictures as a guide) or sewing some toys we would love to hear from you. We will pay for the materials! See Lynette House in Kinder (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays) or leave your details at the office. We will be forever grateful!
