Northwood News Thursday 4 May 2017 Volume 15 From the Headmaster MR P L McAVOY So, why didn’t you come to parents’ evening? The exact numbers or percentages aren’t important, but in my opinion, too few parents arrived at the recent parents’ evenings. If you were one of them, why didn’t you come? Some of the reasons (excuses?) I’ve heard are: I really dislike going to parents’ evening, partly because it means I have to leave the house at a time when I should be settling down to eat my dinner with my family. Because it always feels like a complete waste of time. The way I see it, if there was an actual problem, someone would get in touch, and if there isn’t a problem then, well, quite frankly, what’s the point? This is going to be what happens: We arrive at the school in time for our first appointment and are herded into a cold and echoey hall. The parents before us are the sort that seem to genuinely care about how much homework their child gets set, and their five minute slot turns into 18 minutes, while they ask ridiculous questions about the curriculum and school trips that have yet to even happen. They will stay until they are quite convinced that their child is the best in the school. We will then sit down. Teacher: Well, he seems to be doing fine, he got a good mark in his last test and is currently working at level blah, aiming for a level blah by the end of Grade blah. Me: That’s great. Then we all smile and look fondly at him, who just looks embarrassed, and we move on to the next teacher, where the pattern repeats itself. Finally, what feels like four and a half days later, we emerge from the school. There is no real research on the extent of this in a South African context, but my sense is very much these evenings are a missed opportunity for a number of reasons. Did you actually learn anything new from the teacher? Or did they just tell you what you knew or what you wanted to hear? Did you ask and receive answers as to how you could help your son at home? Did both parent and teacher approach the meeting well prepared, and with a spirit of positive cooperation? What is next, or will both parties just do the same dance again next term? So, why didn’t you come to parents’ evening? The exact numbers or percentages aren’t important, but in my opinion, too few parents arrived at the recent parents’ evenings. If you were one of them, why didn’t you come? Some of the reasons (excuses?) I’ve heard are:

I really dislike going to parents’ evening, partly because it means I have to leave the house at a time when I should be settling down to eat my dinner with my family.

From the Headmaster Sometimes teachers can be reluctant to tell too much blunt bad news, and risk offending parents. This might also reveal that the teacher hasn’t done their job during the term and informed you or the Grade Tutor. Often parents won’t reveal all that is happening on a personal level, for fear of embarrassing themselves and admitting frailty in dealing with their own son.

According to a survey of 2,000 school parents in the UK, 55% felt parents' evenings did not really tell them how their child was progressing, and they often left a hurried meeting feeling "bewildered". But more than three quarters arrive at parents' evenings without having made any preparations or thought about what information they want. The survey also claims that two thirds of parents have been unable to attend a meeting because of work commitments - and one in three fathers think that going to a parents' evening is a job for their partner. It also suggests that too often the experience of parents' evenings can be busy parents arriving for a rushed meeting in which parents are left unsure about their children's school work. Whatever the factors, we as a school are committed to ongoing engagement, and look forward to working with parents before and after parents’ evenings, and not just for those five minutes!

Anti-discrimination address – May 2017 Discrimination may take many forms, such as race, gender, age, religion, societal, disability and so many other types; societies all over the world are constantly grappling with this grave problem. Even today in SA, our society remains fractured because of the cruel policy of Apartheid; it is and will be your task to undo the harm caused by generations of discrimination. Some other countries experience problems not unlike our country’s … Russia and its Chechens, China and its Uighurs, USA and its Native Americans, Australia and its Aborigines, Rwanda and its Hutu & Tutsis…the list is formidably long. Discrimination may be very briefly defined as “the unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice.” People are pre-judged [in advance] by others before they can be fully understood. Often, discrimination arises because of mutual misunderstanding. Take, for example, the case of the first party of Dutch people arriving in what was to be Cape Town. Having rowed ashore, they were greeted by the people who were indigenous to the Cape. Presumably, the Dutch would have said, “Goede Morge, Junges!” and the Khoisan would have replied, “Click!” Instant mutual misunderstanding! Or take the Romans greeting the Turks with “Sit jucundus tibi dies!” and getting the reply, “Salaam aleikum!” And so out of this initial mutual lack of understanding grew assumptions that the other was foolish, of lesser worth, and therefore could be treated as a servant, slave or lackey; and if one side had technological superiority [firearms etc.], the other side’s fate was pretty well sealed. Lack of understanding and unwillingness to change the initial perception causes the problem to grow out of control, which can lead to the most ghastly consequences. Hitler’s abuse of Germany occurred in just 12 years, leaving the country ravaged. Australia’s Aboriginal policies took them almost to the brink of extinction; in fact, the last Tasmanian Aborigine died well over 100 years ago. Thankfully, today the Australians have come to understand much better the complexities of Aboriginal society and are, as a result, more compassionate and inclusive of their indigenous people. In Britain, the political party UKIP is the British Nazi Party with a smiley face. In USA, Mr. Trump’s populist rhetoric concerning foreigners, women, Mexicans and immigrants is alarming, to say the least. South Africa’s wounds are deep and slow to heal; much remains to be done. The harm done by Apartheid’s policies [forced removals, racist labour policies, political discrimination, divide and rule] have severely skewed South Africans’ perception of each other, sowing division and hostility throughout the land. We view each other through stereotypes and generalize about other sectors of society. It’s lazy to do this and tempting to follow a line of thought that requires little effort and which appeals to our baser emotions. You may ask yourself, “So what can I do about all this?” It’s true that you alone cannot resolve all of South Africa’s problems, but if each one of us plays our part by being courteous and considerate, by recognizing our defective points, re-examining our perceptions and trying to improve, we can make a difference to heal our collective wounds. Here at Northwood, we encourage you to practise the art of mutual respect. The school’s code of chivalry urges on you the virtues of the Knight, which empowers you to take on the challenges of life in school and in society. Amongst other things, chivalry requires you to protect the weak, fight wrong, seek justice, be fair to all people, be generous, honour and respect all women, and to be true, gentle, faithful and brave. South Africa has many, diverse cultures; why not learn about them, respect and celebrate their virtues. Compassion and consideration for others can do much to bring harmony to our country – and it starts with your determination to free yourself from the chains of discrimination. Thank you for your attention. Robert Lyle.

HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT What parents need to realise

Benefits of homework are more evident at the high school level

Parental involvement in homework has a strong positive effect

Parental involvement in homework has a more powerful influence on achievement than

either social class or the parents’ own educational level.

School success may depend on parents’ willingness to help overcome obstacles to

homework completion.

WHAT PARENTS CAN DO Parents can help children succeed with homework by providing clear messages about the importance of homework and specific support strategies. Key Messages about Homework There are three key messages about homework that parents need to give their children: Homework is an important part of school. Expect children to complete homework and hand it in when it is due. Holding children accountable for homework builds responsibility and time management skills. Parental support will be provided as needed. Some children are genuinely overwhelmed by homework, either because they find it too difficult or because they don’t know how to work on their own. However, children are less likely to become discouraged or frustrated when parents offer encouragement and assure them that help is available when they get stuck. For some children, it is helpful just to have a parent nearby while they work. Parents will not do homework for their children. This message lets children know that the parent role is to encourage and to help them get unstuck, while at the same time communicating that homework is designed to help children master skills that parents already attained Strategies for Supporting Homework:

Check in with your children every day.

Establish clear homework routines.

Supervise but don’t micromanage.

Help children establish and maintain organizational systems.

Look for others to help.

Use incentives if necessary.

Sport & Culture

From the Head of Extramurals Mr G. Le Roux [email protected] Deputy Headmaster – Extramurals

After what feels like a termly holiday, hopefully we can all get back into some sort of routine going forward. Just a reminder of the important dates coming up:

NORTHWOOD VS PARKTOWN - 19 MAY We need all the support we can get with this as about 350 Parktown Boys High School learners make their way down to us on 19 May. We again will require parents to host as many boys as you can for that evening. As always the relationship is reciprocal and we request as many parents as possible to assist. Even if your child is not involved in one of the 6 extra-mural codes taking place over the weekend, your help is encouraged and will be hugely appreciated.

The following link has been shared on various parent groups, but if you have not yet completed the form, please do so here for hosting purposes: https://goo.gl/forms/hpPOVZ66xtk9JbSA3

A reminder that this is also a compulsory fixture for the entire school for the main rugby game as well as compulsory attendance for Grade 10 for the first team hockey match.

OLD BOYS DAY-3 JUNE A festive day is once again on the cards for Old Boys Day this year. We request again, help from our parents to get involve in our Northwood Parents Group (NPG) to be a set of extra-hands in various areas on the day. If you would like to get involved, please contact Theresa Kennedy at [email protected]. As always this is also a compulsory fixture day: Grade 8 both Hockey 1st and Rugby 1st Team Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Rugby 1st Team
