Spanish Day ¡Hola! On Wednesday 18th January, Northwold totally immersed itself in the world of Spain. We learned to dance like a Flamenco dancer, we sang songs in Spanish, we ate paella, we played Spanish playground games – Hoopla anyone? – and we explored the modern history of Spain through art by creating peace doves and our own version of Picasso’s Guernica. As well our student visitors from Spain (see next item), we had two GSCE Spanish students from a school in Brighton in each class, looking to improve and share their knowledge of Spanish. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting day. Each child has his or her own story to tell and a favourite moment. A massive thank you to Ms Sams who organised a truly memorable Northwold day.

Spanish Student Visitors Bienvenido a Londres! As well as our Spanish Day last week, we had a large group of students from Spain on work experience in our school. They are due to take their final school exams before university in a few months and they came to Northwold to learn some English and teach us some Spanish. Each class in the school had two students from the Instituto de Educación Secundaria Laurel de la Reina in Granada. They said their experience at Northwold this week was life-changing. We at Northwold learnt a huge amount from them too. ¡Adios, amigos!

Most Likely to Succeed – Film and Discussion

We are delighted to announce that we are hosting an exclusive screening of a film called Most Likely to Succeed. The filmmaker, Nick Corston, will also be at the screening to lead a discussion of about the film afterwards. The film has been nominated for the Sundance festival and explores the need for us to change the way education is delivered in schools, with a greater focus on creativity, collaboration and innovation. This film is a must for anyone interested in the state of education today and it forces us to pause and think about where we should go next. Tickets for the event are only £5.90. Ireland Class Trip – London’s Architecture On Thursday, Ireland had a great day out exploring London. We walked along the embankment of the River Thames and saw so many old and new buildings. We then went up to the 10th floor in the Tate Modern and had a look at our amazing city from up above. Most of the class said that The Shard was their favourite building because it is so tall. A big thank you for the great parental support on the trip.

Somalia Class Trip – London Architecture As part of this term’s topic – ‘How do buildings stay up’ – Somalia class went to the South Bank to look at some of the iconic buildings in London. After taking pictures of the London Eye, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, we walked to the Tate Modern Gallery. We then went up to the10th floor of the Tate Modern, where we viewed London from the viewing platform. From the viewing platform we saw more of the wonderful buildings in London.

Ghana Class Trip – Royal Observatory On Tuesday 17th January, the Ghana Class visited the Greenwich Observatory. It was an exciting day for the children as they got to enjoy a show at London's only Planetarium. This show took the children on a journey through the Milky Way Galaxy. They learnt a few facts about each planet, while singing along to the Teddy Bear song. It was a fantastic experience for everyone! A big thank you to all our teachers, Spanish students and parents who came along to help on the trip.

Year 2 Trip – National Portrait Gallery On Thursday 19th January, both Year 2 classes visited The National Portrait Gallery, as part of their new Cornerstones topic, Towers, Tunnels and Turrets. The students took part in a fascinating workshop, finding out about how to spot a king or a queen from the Tudor and Stuart times. They imagined how they would behave if they met a member of royalty and made sketches of themselves as kings and queens. They also found and sketched the palaces in the middle of London. "My favourite part of my amazing day was when we saw the monument (Nelson's Column). It was bigger than I thought but it was like a dream. I also liked the big thumb because it felt like it was telling me 'It's a good day' and it was a good day. I wish we could do it again." - Anayah "My favourite thing about the trip was when we looked at the pictures and learned about kings and queens.”- Ekam "On Thursday afternoon we first ate our food at Trafalgar Square. After we sketched in our books. I sketched a man on a horse, and a lion. Then we went to school." - Ayaan

“I was really good at curtseying.” – Unique.

Year 6 Trip – Safety Workshop

“The Year 6’s had a chance to learn about safety (fires, road safety and so on). This was to help us in the future, when we start secondary school. We had different workshops in the Hackney Museum where we learnt what to do in different situations if we happened to be in them. We were put in groups and each workshop tutor had to score our behaviour with points. The team with the most points got a certificate. Overall we learnt what to do when anything bad happened and hopefully we stick to the rules we learnt.” – Lina.

SATS Parents Meetings – February 2017 We will be having parents’ meetings at the start of next month to discuss the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 tests for Year 2 and Year 6 students. The meetings will be held on the following dates:

· Key Stage 1 (Year 2 parents) - Tuesday 7th February at 9am

· Key Stage 2 (year 6 parents) - Thursday 9th February at 9am

There are changes to these tests, so it is important that you attend to be aware of the structure and expectations. We look forward to seeing you.

Milk Cartons PLEASE Our Nursery needs your help. They are planning to make a spectacular structure out of plastic milk cartons. Please, please, please can you wash out those empty milk cartons (all sizes) over the next week and send them into school? It will be much appreciated and we’ll share pictures of the finished ‘dwelling’ very soon.

Morning Drop Off We’ve noticed a number of parents coming with their children into the playground well before the start of the school day. Please stay with your child until it’s time to go in.

School Trips – REMINDER Trips are really exciting for the children; they really enjoy the experience of learning outside school. To help the support your children please could you bring them to school on time. Some classes have missed their workshops because they have been waiting for children that have come to school late and delayed the start of the journey

Forest School – READY FOR ALL WEATHERS Forest School is an important part of our school curriculum. It will only be taught indoors if we are experiencing severe weather conditions, like blizzards or high winds (yellow on the BBC weather charts). We ask you to ensure you send your children to be prepared for all weathers – the cold, rain, sun, and high temperatures. We are not able to accommodate requests to remain in school because of the weather. We thank you for your cooperation in this.

Wednesday Coffee Mornings Every Wednesday from 9.00-10.00am there will be a coffee morning held in the Canteen. Each week, one of the school’s leaders will be talking about their area of responsibility. The next meeting is on 25th January.
