The Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association (SEMA) offers incredible scholarship and networking opportunities to college students around the nation. The annual SEMA show is the largest automotive product trade event in the world. While attending the show, the students worked the show floor by assisting various booths and learning the nuances of the companies they are working with. They were invited to three banquets: the Young Executive Network, the Professional Restyled Network, and the LTAA Light Truck Accessory Association. In their off time, they visited other company booths and talked to numerous potential employers. Each of the three interns received up to 15 job offers just from speaking to employers and handing out their resumes. The three students even received multiple business cards from employers for future networking. Apart from the SEMA Show, the students visited a few popular destinations in Nevada including the Hoover Dam & museum, Boulder City, the Shelby Museum, American Pawn, Count Custom Cars, and of course downtown Las Vegas. On the night of Halloween, they participated in the events on Fremont Street. To qualify for SEMA scholarships, students must be in their sophomore year of studies and enrolled in either an automotive/high performance or automotive/diesel program, have at least a 3.0 GPA with minimal absences, and have applied for and been awarded a scholarship from SEMA. SEMA scholarship winners are then interviewed by a committee for their professional insight and desire for excellence in their field of expertise. If selected, interns are able to experience and learn from some of the best manufacturers the automotive industry has to offer by attending the SEMA Show.

The year started off strong in January with the introduction of our new Robotics and Automation program. This new program, along with the addition of the brand new Robotics Center to house classes for the program, allowed students to take on a new role in the College of Applied Technologies.

In March, the University of Northwestern Ohio American Marketing Association (AMA) Club won the “Top 5 Small Chapter” award. In order to be eligible for this award, the club must submit a Chapter Plan and an Annual Report outlining the club’s professional development, community service, communications, membership and chapter planning. This honor signifies that the UNOH chapter of AMA is among the top 5 small chapters in the world – an amazing feat to say the least!

May marked the groundbreaking of the Rotary Field of Dreams that will be located on the west end of campus. This field will serve as the new home for the Allen County Abilities Baseball League, providing children with special needs the perfect place to play baseball. The new field will feature fully synthetic turf and will be handicap accessible to allow for play even following rain events.

The annual graduation ceremony took place in June, recognizing the accomplishments of 1,207 students as they officially graduated. Over 400 students walked the stage on this day to receive their degree. This year also marked the largest graduating class for international students in the University’s history.

August marked the completion of Earl McGovern Way that runs from the west side of the 400 building to Hartzler Road. This new road eliminates the need to drive through the College park and Northwestern park dorm communities, making the area safer overall for dorm residents.

Robyn Moodaly, a UNOH Women’s Soccer player represented her home country of South Africa during the Rio Olympic Games in August. This was her second Olympic appearance after being a member of the team as an 18-year-old in 2012.

Racers Station closed out the month of August with its Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening ceremony. This brand new building now serves as the official hangout spot for UNOH students, complete with pool tables, video game stations, big screen TVs, an outdoor movie screen, fire pits, and much more!

The UNOH Resident Assisting Program officially launched in September which introduced a Residence Life team to the Sherwood living community on campus. In the RA Program, students can become more involved within UNOH’s living community, along with gaining leadership, problem solving, and time management skills.

The AMSOIL Engine Masters Challenge took over campus in October, bringing in thirty of the best engine builders in North America to campus to pit their engines against one another. During the event, forty UNOH students assisted the UNOH faculty, Hot Rod Magazine staff, and competitors with their setup and teardown.

In November, the University was awarded with the Military Friendly School Gold honor in the Private University category with enrollment below 10,000 students. The award signifies the University’s commitment to making the dream of a high-quality education to the men and women who serve our country a reality.

The UNOH Softball team participated in November’s Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk with a goal of raising $1,000 for the cause. They exceeded their goal and raised a total of $1,372 which placed them second among all community organizations that participated in the event.

Our Fall Sports team finished out the year with an unprecedented season. The UNOH Men’s Golf team and Men’s Soccer team won the WHAC regular season championship. The Men’s Soccer team also went on to win the tournament championships and made it to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Soccer Championship. The Women’s Soccer team won the WHAC regular season championship, tournament championships and was crowned champions of the NAIA National Soccer Championship making UNOH history. Finally, Women’s Soccer head coach Stuart Gore was named NAIA Coach of the Year by the NSCAA.

| ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Name: Brian Williams

Graduation Year: 2011/2014

Degree: Information Technology/Marketing

Current Employer: NOW Marketing Group

What first attracted you to UNOH?I was attracted to UNOH because being a Lima native I was able to stay close to home, which saved me money! I loved the small class sizes and the overall atmosphere of the campus.

What do you remember most vividly about your time at UNOH?During my time at UNOH, I remember how personable all of my professors were. I wasn’t intimidated or afraid to ask them for help. I felt at home during my time at UNOH, and that’s exactly what I wanted. Since I attended the college for 6 ½ years UNOH has become a part of me, and I couldn’t be happier to be an alumnus of this school.

What person at UNOH, staff or student, made the biggest impression on you?The professor that had the biggest impact on me was my Marketing professor Dr. Mann! She pushed me to be my best and she always believed in me. I still talk to Dr. Mann to this day, because of her relationship with NOW Marketing Group. I even had the opportunity to speak in her Internet Marketing Class during the Fall of 2016. It was a surreal moment, but proof that everything comes full circle and that I’m right where I’m supposed to be.

What are some lessons you learned at UNOH that have served you well in your life after UNOH?During my time at UNOH I learned that you never stop learning and that the relationships you build now could serve you well after graduation. You never know, your classmate may end up being your future co-worker so you should always be kind to everyone. Ongoing education and training will help you become more valuable in the workforce so never stop becoming your best even after receiving your diploma.

What was your career field and first job after graduation?I actually landed and started my first Marketing position during my last week of finals. I became the Marketing Manager at Allan Nott Honda Toyota. I remember being so stressed that I wouldn’t find a job come graduation, but everything fell into place better than I could’ve ever imagined. I learned so much landing my first full-time position after graduation, but it was just preparing me for where I

was about to go next.

Who is your current employer and what do you do?I currently work as Brand Manager at NOW Marketing Group in Elida, Ohio. I was never even looking for this job, which makes it a little sweeter. I was working at my previous job and NOW Marketing Group had an open position and my Marketing Professor and former classmate mentioned my name to the owner and CEO of NOW and the rest is history. As a Brand Manager I manage several different clients from various industries. I manage their online reputation, write content for their social media channels, and blogs for their website. I also strategize with each individual clients on a monthly basis and come up with new campaign ideas as well as attend their video shoots. It’s great being a part of each client’s whole marketing strategy!

How has your UNOH education benefited you professionally? My education at UNOH has benefited me professionally because my Marketing professor and one of my classmates are the reason I am at my current position (NOW Marketing Group). Everything I learned, the relationships I built, and the tests I took prepared me for the very place I am now. I knew there was a reason God didn’t want me to go to Nashville, and everything has played out perfectly. UNOH is still a huge part of who I am today and who I will become in the future. I couldn’t be prouder to be a Racer!

What advice do you have for UNOH students or other alumni? If I could offer current students advice I would tell them to always keep learning and writing! Marketing is always changing so it’s important to stay up on current trends and continue growing. Learning doesn’t stop when you leave the classroom. To be the best you have to apply yourself and take advantage of each opportunity that comes your way. Also, take advantage of the clubs that UNOH offers because it gives you the chance to grow, learn new skills, and build relationships. You may be just as surprised as I was that an education from UNOH will take you down a road that you never expected to go down. The future is yours, take a hold of it.
