Green lightfor Dublin15 school

THERE was some goodnews for Dublin 15 lastmonth when the long-awaited planning permissionfor a new school buildingwas given the green light.

The way is clear now forwork on Mulhuddart NationalSchool to get underway, whichhas been welcomed by many es-pecially the 270 pupils of theschool who have been taught inprefabs until now.

Dublin West TD and Minis-ter for Transport, Tourism andSport Leo Varadkar describedthe planning approval as“tremendous news for Tyrrel-stown and Mulhuddart”.

“We can now look forwardto a purpose-built nationalschool with full facilities, andwith the capacity to deal withthe area’s rapidly growing pop-ulation,” he said.

“Parents and families havebeen campaigning for years fora permanent school building.

“The new three storeybuilding should be an excellentfacility for the school with 24classrooms, a library and re-source room, and dedicatedsporting facilities.”

Local councillor KieranDennison said the new buildingis vital to accommodate the bur-geoning population in the area.

“The school is vital whenthe area has one of the highestbirth rates in the country,” hestated.

“I am very pleased thatMulhuddart NS and Tyrrel-stown Educate Togetherschools, which is located on thesame site, will now both get pur-pose-built facilities.

“And with 60 acres of guar-anteed open space and commu-nity facilities, this is a reallygreat place to live and bring upa family.”

“Rachel should have beenmoved,” he believed. “Therewas a lot of anti-social behav-iour in the block and herfriends and family couldn’tvisit.

“This might not have hap-pened if she had been moved.

“BRL will also have to actto ensure it doesn’t happenagain. There’s a small numberof families still isolated inblocks affected by anti-socialbehaviour and they can’t havevisitors either.”

Deputy Ellis said SinnFein would be supporting aPeople Before Profit motionbeing put to Dublin CityCouncil calling for an inquiry.

“There’s a lot of unan-swered questions about whathappened to Rachel,” headded

Deputy John Lyons (Lab),who was also at the meeting,

said it was important that thefamily got the answers theywere looking for.

“I’ve spoken to the familysince the meeting at the Axisand have given them a com-mitment that I will do every-thing that I can to supportthem,” he said.

“We also need to makesure preventative measures areput in place so a tragedy likethis can never happen again.

“I’m following up withBRL on the coroner’s recom-mendation about the council’sde-tenanting policy and I’vewritten to residents in Sillogueto offer my support in movingthem from the blocks.

“I’m also trying to get theCity Coroner to speak directlywith the family and get a fullcopy of his report.”

This week the campaignmoves to Dublin City Counciloffices on Main Street, Bally-

mun, where a protest will takeplace at 11.30am on Thursday(May 12). The council has sofar declined to comment ondetails of the case but has saidit “very much regrets the tragicdeath of Rachel Peavoy” andexpressed sympathy with herchildren and her wider familyon their sad loss.

A spokesperson also toldNorthside People that it was en-deavouring to maintain a goodquality of life for tenants in theflat blocks during the ongoingdemolition programme.

“In his recommendation, the City Coroner advised thathe would be writing to the CityCouncil with regard to our pol-icy on de-tenanting,” he said.

“We await the coroner’scommunication in this regardto which we will give due con-sideration.”

Gardai arrested TonyQuinn (30) after he had col-lected the bag of cash from arailway line around Broom-bridge Railway Station.

Detective Sergeant RobertO’Reilly revealed that a Per-manent TSB staff memberhad taken the money fromher Phibsboro branch withpermission after she’d beenmade to believe a gang hadkidnapped her partner.

The detective sergeant toldMr Dominic McGinn SC,prosecuting, that two ESBemployees working on rail-way cables in the Broom-bridge Station area grewsuspicious when they noticeda woman heave a large leatherbag over a fence and hadphoned emergency serviceswhen they saw Quinn retrievethe item.

Det Sgt O’Reilly said hehad already dispatched un-marked Garda cars to the areaand officers arrested Quinn ashe ran off with the bag.

Quinn, of Park View, ParkClose, pleaded guilty to thetheft of e318,000 cash at Per-manent TSB, Phibsboro onSeptember 22, 2009. He has

no previous convictions.Judge Martin Nolan said

though he accepted Quinn hadrehabilitated himself, that hehad come “low in the peckingorder in the organisation ofthe offence” and would proba-bly not re-offend, he didn’t feelthe “insidious” crime could es-cape a custodial sentence.

Det Sgt O’Reilly told MrMcGinn that the bank em-ployee had arrived into herbranch in a “hysterical state”asking to speak with the assis-tant manager so she could gete400,000 required for herpartner’s safe release.

The criminals behind theoperation phoned the womanwhile the assistant managernegotiated with the bank’shead office and told her todrop the money aroundBroombridge Railway Station.

The woman remained inthe area until she saw Quinnretrieve the bag.

Det Sgt O’Reilly saidQuinn had been sweating andout of breath as he ran fromthe scene with the bag and told

arresting officers he had beenforced to collect the cashover a drug debt.

He co-operated with gar-dai and admitted there hadbeen no kidnapping while hewas detained in custody forone week.

Det Sgt O’Reilly agreedwith Mr Felix McEnroy SC,defending, that his client hadbeen a “serious drug addict”at the time of the offencewhich was consistent withhow he had appeared on ar-rest.

The detective sergeantfurther agreed that Quinn isthe only person to have beenprosecuted in the case to dateand that gardai are investi-gating threats made to hisfamily.

Mr McEnroy had submit-ted to Judge Nolan that hisclient should be treated as afirst time offender because ofhis previous clean record.

He said his client hasbeen trying to get off drugsand rehabilitate himself.

Mr McEnroy further sub-mitted that Quinn had agood work history andstrong family support.

by Aoibhinn TwomeyThe trio, pals from child-

hood, are determined to makeit to Mongolia and back intheir 27-year-old Landroverwithout the support of a trans-lator or support crew for thetrip, which is likely to take al-most three months to com-plete.

Daniel Lambert (25) and

Northside pals set for Mongolia adventureTHREE Northside friends set off last week to travel12,500 miles across three continents, 22 countries andthree deserts to raise money for sick children.

● ADVENTURERS: Pictured are Daniel Lambert, Shay Cloherty and Shane Maguire who are heading toMongolia. PHOTO BY DARREN KINSELLA

Shay Cloherty (24), both fromGlasnevin, and Santry localShane McGuire (24) set offfrom Rosslare on May 10.

They are bracing them-selves for run-ins with themafia and bandits but are un-fazed by the dangers and risks

they could encounter despitethe fact that Shane was almostkilled during their last adven-ture.

Four years ago the friendstravelled across Americawhere Shane was the victimof a frenzied knife attack thatleft him fighting for his life.

It’s all water under thebridge now though, accordingto the mechanic who wasstabbed nine times in the backby a group of Neo Nazis.

“It was a close one alrightbut it’s like it never hap-pened,” Shane told NorthsidePeople.

“It was a great trip and ex-perience apart from the knifeattack which happened twodays before we were due to flyhome.

“When I recovered and re-turned home my family said:‘right, you’re not going on anymore trips’ but they knowwhat I’m like. I love travellingand adventures so I have theirfull support now.

“I’m really looking for-ward to the Mongolia trip andI’d prefer not to think of thedangers.”

Shane and his friends arefinancing the trip themselvesat a cost of between e20,000and e25,000.

However, they are hopingto raise e10,000 for theChristina Noble Children’sFoundation in Mongolia andOur Lady’s Hospital for SickChildren in Crumlin from do-nations and the publicity gen-erated through regular videoblogs that will be posted onthe internet.

Daniel explained thatMongolia was chosen as thedestination as it is the furthestcountry you can drive to fromIreland with your own vehicle.

“We know that this is amassive undertaking and chal-lenge especially when we’redriving a Landrover that’solder than all of us and onethat I bought with my phone

on eBay,” he said. “We’ve spent about

e14,000 on travel so far andwe estimate that we’ll spendup to e6,000 on fuel but wealso have to factor in thatthere’ll be a lot of bribes in-volved in getting across somecountries.

“From what we know theguards at the border crossingpresume because we’re west-erners that we’ve loads ofmoney so they won’t let us

across unless we pay a bribe.“None of us have any

other languages so we’ll becompletely out of our com-fort zone.”

Their choice of vehicle, aLandrover, which has beenmodified into a camper van,is also bound to throw up itsown challenges, no doubtputting Shane’s mechanicalexpertise to the test.

Another major difficultythe friends face will be on

their return trip where theywill travel 8,000 miles acrossRussia.

“Ideally, we’d like toavoid Russia and travelthrough the same countriesas we did on our outwardtrip,” Daniel added.

“But visas are a problemwithin a short space of time.

“We know that on ourdrive through Russia someparts are well-known forbeing ruled by the mafia and

bandits so we’ll try our bestto stop and hide our carsomewhere safe in night-timehours.”

Daniel, Shay and Shanehope to return to Irish soil byJuly 31.

Mr Dunne handed overmoney from his cashbox, fledthe car and reported the inci-dent to gardai. Gda Conwaytold Mr Cooney that McKe-own later claimed he couldn’tremember the incident.

The next day McKeownchased Mr Farrell from his taxiwith a screwdriver at BerryfieldAvenue after getting the cabfrom the Ardmore Hotel.

The driver flagged down apassing Garda car after he hadescaped McKeown and re-ported the attempted robbery.

The taxi man, who was vis-ibly shaken and had a cut onhis hand, could still see McKe-own rummaging through hiscar when he stopped the Gardacar.

Gda Conway said col-

leagues drove towards McK-eown and chased him on footover back garden walls as hefled the scene.

The Garda said McKe-own made some admissionsto this offence when he wasarrested a short time later.

He agreed with Mr Gar-rett McCormack BL, defend-ing, that his client had noprevious convictions for vio-lence at the time and had a se-rious drug addiction.

Garda Graham Dillontold Mr Cooney that he saw acar with no headlights ondriving towards him at Glen-hill Court, Finglas, after hehad received a call about aman damaging vehicles in thearea.

He said colleagues caughtMcKeown after he had aban-doned the car and tried to es-cape.

The Garda said McKe-own smelled of alcohol on ar-rest.

He agreed with Mr Mc-Cormack that his client hadled a “chaotic lifestyle” at thetime.

Mr McCormack submit-ted to Judge Martin Nolanthat his client’s early pleas inthe robbery cases had sparedthe victims going throughcross-examination in court.

He said McKeown’s life“went off the rails” after hisfather was killed in a gang-land shooting in 2006.

by Jessica MageeThe budding broadcasters can

be heard live on 107.8 GenerateFM every weekend in May pro-viding a range of news and cur-rent affairs programmes alongsidemusic and magazine shows. Thetemporary station, which ran forthe last few years as Liber8 FMand Digital Hub FM, is also beingstreamed live online.

The station is being run by acore group of community pro-gramme makers aged from 14 upto 84, in partnership with Regen-erate Media, Dublin City Counciland the Digital Skills Academy.

Eighty of the participants arestudents at the Digital Skills Acad-emy, which provides Government-funded media training courses forpeople looking to upskill or retrainwhile out of work.

Director of the Digital SkillsAcademy, Paul Dunne, fromMarino, says involvement in theradio station has given hands-ontraining to a total of 250 studentsover the last five years.

“Their course is in digitalaudio production, so this is achance for the students to get realbroadcast work experience andperform their skills so that friends, family and the general public canget to hear what they produce onGenerate FM,” states Mr Dunne.

Students generate careerprospects in radio

A GROUP of unemployed Northsiders are presenting and pro-ducing their own radio shows on a new temporary station thismonth.

● READY FOR THE AIRWAVES: Pictured (from l-r) are William Aggor, Daragh Brophy and Kate Garry who are in-volved in the Generate FM programmes.

A UNIQUE programme that puts pro-fessional unemployed people back intothe workplace is starting again thissummer.

Over 400 professional unemployed peoplejoined ‘Begin Again’ before last December and260 have returned to work.

Now, the Department of Enterprise andSkills has announced details of the next BeginAgain for the summer period.

The Begin Again programme matcheseach person’s skills to a host company.

A job placement is for three months, doinga work based assignment and a mentor is ap-pointed to support each person placed.

A short eight-day training programme inleadership and management is also part of thecourse.

It works by getting participants back intothe workplace where they can maintain moti-vation and confidence.

They can actively participate in securingtheir own future by meeting new contacts andnetworks and developing skills.

The programme is designed for unem-ployed people who have transferable skills andexperience.

Participants have included engineers, ac-countants, sales, administration, managementand operations people.

It is open to applications from those on So-cial Welfare for three months or more.

A new start for professionals

“Quite a number of our stu-dents have been previously em-ployed in construction, retail ormanufacturing.

“They’re using this course todevelop new skills for occupationsthat will be in increasing demandover the current years includingdigital audio production, webvideo, gaming, animation, filmand music technology.”

One of those students is KateGarry, from Phibsboro, who usedto work in a technical role at New-stalk radio station before she was avictim of job cuts in 2008.

“I managed to work my wayup in Newstalk without qualifica-tions, but when I lost my job I de-cided to broaden my scope foremployment and upskill in differ-ent digital media,” says Ms Garry.

“I looked into a lot of differentcourses and many of them werevery-theory based, but this courseis great in that it’s really practical.

“We’re using cameras andmixing desks, sound equipment, animation programmes, writingmovie reviews and getting to pro-duce radio programmes.”

Five groups of students areeach presenting an hour-longmagazine show, which includes a

five-minute documentary, switch-ing roles between producer, pre-senter, desk-operator andcontributor.

Raheny native Daragh Brophyis one of the tutors helping the stu-dents on live radio.

A newsreader, reporter andmusic presenter with nine years’experience at Q102, Phantom andINN, Daragh told Northside Peoplethat he’s really impressed withhow the students are respondingto the opportunities for live broad-casting.

“I suppose what marks thiscourse out is that participants ac-tually have access to a genuinecommunity-based station,” hesays.

“They get their hands dirtymaking real radio within weeks ofstarting.

“We take them through thebasics of recording and pro-gramme making, then they’ve thechance to start producing content.

“We’ve already got some greatdocumentaries and interviews ‘inthe can’ with local celebrities andraconteurs. Listeners are really en-joying it so far and are giving usgood feedback.”

William Aggor, originallyfrom Ghana and now living onCapel Street, says he is enjoyingthe hands-on experience of work-ing on live radio.

“My favourite aspect is newsreading, but I’ve learnt lots of

skills including video-editing andproducing,” states William.

The 24-year-old previouslytrained in computers in Ghanaand has done voluntary work inDublin, training people from im-migrant communities in IT.

“I’m really enjoying thecourse, and I’d love to get a job inradio presenting or working in themedia when it’s finished,” headds.

Wall TilingClearly some people have

a natural talent for tiling. Butto achieve a high standard intiling under all circumstancesrequires many years’ experi-ence. Indeed most of our tilershave spent their whole careeronly working in bathrooms.

It always fascinates me tosee the many and varied waysthat a wall is tiled and tiling issomething that many peoplewould feel they would like tohave a go at. No doubt youwill have your own method. Here we shall describe howwe proceed.

● My basic rule when tiling isto plan the layout well andrecheck it before you start. Ifyou can avoid falling into traps

its half the battle● You will certainly need aquality tile cutters● Walls are tiled by means ofa batten. Normally 2x1”straight and of good qualityand that’s levelled perfectly● The wall is tiled from thebatten up. When dry the bat-ten is removed. We always tilethe floor before laying the bot-tom wall tile● Step out the tiles from floorto ceiling allowing for cuts topand bottom.● Check the ceiling is leveland not running at a slope● Step out the tiles from wallto wall allowing for cuts eachside● The other key thing I try tomaintain when tiling is tokeep the grid structure intact

Preparing for the perfect bathroom - TilingBathroom specialists, O’Connor Carroll, are experts at creating perfect bathrooms

and over the coming weeks will be sharing their secrets with us. Here, they detail how they deal with tiling.

rather than religiously follow-ing the batton or allow spac-ing between tiles to becomebigger. We often use maskingtape if necessary● As always don’t compro-mise on adhesives or groutsyou’re only deluding yourselfby using cheap materials.● Ensure the adhesives andgrouts are fit for purpose. Toenable us to grout same daywe use a flexible fast setting

adhesive that dries rapidly andhas higher adhesion qualities.

This is a bagged adhesivethat needs to be mixed. Invari-ably we use rapid set flexiblein shower areas, around win-dows and where radiators willbe hung. Also for heavier typetiles. Otherwise for less impor-tant areas good quality stan-dard premixed adhesive is fine● Ensure tile cuts are reason-able around windows and

doors● We tend to use 2mm spac-ers between tiles for wall tiles● Window tiling is difficult tomaster even for so called ex-perienced tilers. Again my ad-vice is to first try to get thegrid completed around thewindow before the cuts. Sometilers use a batten for thiswhen tiling over the window.

I tend to use a fast settingadhesive which will hold thetiles better and masking tape. But be warned this takes timeto master. The process is; laysome tiles. Tape them to previ-ous tiles. Allow to dry for ashort time. Repeat. Once youhave the grid in place thenproceed with the window cutsand end wall cuts● Small mosaic borders arealso best tiled using a rapidsetting adhesive.

OsteopathyOSTEOPATHY AND THE GOLFER

The trend among golfers who only attend an Osteopath totreat injuries is changing. Golfers are becoming more andmore aware of how regular Osteopathic treatment canbetter prepare them, by improving poor body mechanicswhich are causative factors in the injuries.

Muscles, tendons and ligaments that are in a state ofirregular tension are more prone to damage than those thatare relaxed and not under constant strain. By addressing theseweaknesses Osteopathic treatment helps to reduce the injurypotential and increase fitness and strength. Osteopaths arealso frequent members of the medical teams on major golftours.

The golf swing is the most important component of thegame and involves rotation through the whole body togenerate the energy to strike the ball. The maximum potentialfor the swing depends on the bony mechanical structure of thebody to be balanced and mobile. Compromised bodymechanics reduces the efficiency of the body and so theswing. Poor mechanics also increase the potential for injury.

As the swing begins strain is put on the wrists, to elbowsthrough the shoulders. The whole spine then goes into severerotation down through the pelvis and hips, through the legs, knees, ankles and the feet.

A strong balanced pelvis and mobile joints are essential tomaximise the potential of the golf swing. If they are not, thenthe muscles, ligaments and tendons take the strain. These softtissues are not designed to take strain, they are designed formobility. This is why injuries like golfers elbow, wrist strain andknee injuries are common. Low back and shoulder strain areamong the most common of golf related injuries and are by farthe most debilitating.

The human body was designed to be balanced and inharmony. Falls, knocks, accidents etc…. cause this balanceand harmony to be disrupted. Bony components and jointscan be damaged which causes the muscles and soft tissuesattached to them to become tense and strained. This sets upcompensation through the body causing anything from poorposture to chronic mechanical breakdown, depending on theseverity of the injuries received.

Any injury sustained from as early as childhood has thepotential to remain in the body if left unchecked.Sometimes we don’t take minor injuries seriously, butenough minor injuries on top of each other can beproblematic. We tend to accept the fact that “my low backhas always been a bit achey” or “ I have always had adodgy shoulder”. When we are young these remain minor, but as the years creep up on us these little niggles becomethe big problem. This need not be.

One of the Osteopathic principles is “Structure GovernsFunction” so a body that was designed to be mobile andversatile will be severely hindered by structural restrictions. It is our aim to minimise or correct any of these restrictionsallowing the body to return to its natural balance.

Visiting your Osteopath early after an injury can minimizethe impact upon the body. Regular visits will greatly reduce thepossibility of further injuries.

Even if you have poor posture, imbalanced body mechanicsand are carrying injuries for years Osteopathic treatment canhelp you get the most from your system.

Therefore it is obvious that treatment which addresses theimbalance and immobility in the bony skeletal system is crucialto the long term performance of the golfer, any sportspersonand anybody wanting to get more from their body.

So, regular Osteopathic treatment can, Treat acute andchronic injuries, Improve the general body mechanics,Promote flexibility and strength, allowing the maximumpotential to be achieved, which includes better health. Not tomention better golf.
