NISD employees open hearts & wallets during campaign

NISD employees opened their hearts and their wallets and gave generously during the United Way annual campaign. More than 3,000 employees donated about $157,000 to United Way and its partner agencies in Bexar County. This year’s campaign was moved from its usual fall schedule after Hurricane Harvey hit the Gulf Coast and Northside students and employees donated both their time and their treasure to the relief effort. Congratulations to all the campus United Way representatives and their administrators who worked hand and hand for a successful campaign.

Campuses who raised the most within their grade level are Braun Station ES, Vale MS, Taft and Communications Arts high schools, Reddix Center, and Student Services. Last year, the United Way provided services to about half a million residents in Bexar County. Of that number, 796 Northside employees received direct services. Since 2003, Northside employees have raised $2.5 million for the more than 100 agencies across the county.

Brandeis HS The Brandeis Bronc Botz team (pictured) is headed to the FIRST World Championship in Houston after winning the Alamo Regional and prestigious Chairman’s Award. Nearly 50 robotics teams competed at the regional competition from Central and South Texas. Northside Alternative HS Northside Alternative HS recently hosted its 2nd Annual Tech Expo to highlight how their teachers are engaging students in learning across all subject areas. Pictured is Social Studies teacher Deborah Varela who showcased how students are using Nearpod and Padlet in Economics and Government lessons.

Ross MS April 2-6 was Bus Driver and Assistant Appreciation Week in NISD. Schools across the District made signs, gave gifts, and stopped to let their bus drivers know how much they are appreciated. Pictured are members of the Kindness Club at Ross MS letting their bus drivers know that they are “Wheelie” appreciated.

Cody ES Students and staff at Cody ES held a Magical Fun Family Art Night where all the art activities were Disney-inspired. Families enjoyed crafting and creating together. There was also a dance performance by 4th grade Art Club members, and a pantomime by members of the Theater Arts Club. Pictured are (from l-r) Sally Salazar, art teacher; Rachel Lantz, 5th grade teacher; Jacklyn Galvan, counselor; and Tiffany Cormier, Special Education teacher.
