Woods’ Kudos PTA highlights outstanding volunteers During the recent PTA Founders Day celebration at O’Connor HS, several individuals and schools were recognized by the PTA for outstanding service. Alexis Stilwell, a student at Stevenson MS, was recognized for her artwork which was chosen to be featured on the evening’s program. Valerie Arce, vice principal at Cole ES, received the Vice Principal of the Year award; and Dr. Jerry Woods, principal at Clark HS, received the Principal of the Year award. In addition, PTA Council President Michelle Montemayor was presented the Texas PTA Extended Service Award; the M.A.R.S. award for male membership went to Beard ES; the Student Membership award went to Clark HS; the Community Membership award was presented to Carson ES; and both the Grandparent Membership award and Golden Apple for 100 percent teacher membership went to Ellison ES. NISD educator receives state honor Brandon Masters, an 8th grade teacher at Jones MS, is the recipient of the 2017 Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members (TCBSBM) Outstanding Teacher Award. He will be recognized at the association’s annual Education Summit held in Austin later this month. This is the second year in a row that an educator from Jones MS has received this honor. Masters has been a teacher at the campus for the past eight years. In its 20th year, the festival moved to the Marshall HS campus last year, allowing for an even bigger event. The family-oriented event, which is free to the public, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes an art show and sale with more than 2,500 pieces of high-quality artwork by NISD students. In addition, there will be musical entertainment, food booths, a Chalkfest, glass blowing demonstrations, face painting, and much more. This year’s grand prize winner in the publicity contest is Rebecca Ruiz, a 9th grader from Clark HS. Her winning art, titled “El Leon De Los Artes,” will be featured on the publicity poster and event t-shirt. Miles of smiles at Allen ES There were “miles of smiles” at Allen ES as students received free dental screenings and learned about dental hygiene. To kickoff National Children’s Dental Health Month the City of San Antonio Metro Health district brought dentists and hygienists to the campus through the “Miles of Smiles” program. Another special guest, with a little less dental experience, was the Spurs Coyote. For additional pictures click here. Students celebrate 100 days of learningLangley ESLangley ES held a Career Day to promote the importance of higher education. Students were exposed to many different careers with professionals around the community visiting the school to talk to the students. Those participating included engineers, doctors, military, wildlife conservationists, and even a local comedian from the show “Where’s Cleto?” Pictured are (from l-r) Principal Leticia Ramirez, Cleto Rodriguez, Counselor Jessica Martinez, and Vice Principal Aydee Ruiz-Ufland.

McDermott ESCollaborative teachers Melanija Long and Rebecca Sorola have been working with their 5th grade students to build fluency. Recently, both classes worked together to perform the play, “The Three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig” by Euene Trivizas. Students rehearsed for two weeks and performed the drama in the campus library as a

“Reader’s Theater.” Students designed their own costumes and created the scenery. According to Sorola, the Reader’s Theater was a great way to boost confidence, accelerate fluency, and incorporate team building skills for the students.

Warren HSAs part of Career and Technical Education (CTE) month, seniors enrolled in the Practicum in Education and Training class at Warren HS explored the world of education and what makes an effective teacher. Students learned to plan and direct individualized instruction. Northside ISD celebrated the 100th day of school with many fun and educational lessons throughout the District. At Franklin ES, students dressed up as if they were a century old, made crafts with 100 items, and enjoyed many other activities focused on the number 100.
