INSIDE YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD. YOUR NEWSPAPER. ALSO north shore Since the dawn of time, animals have lived alongside mankind and have played an important part in our wellbeing and growth. They provide companionship, work for us by hunt- ing, herding and acting as seeing-eye and helper dogs and perform many much needed duties. They sniff for bombs, detect drugs crossing interna- tional borders, have the ability to find people caught in avalanches and find missing children. As pets, animals can provide unconditional love and companionship. In our families animals are indis- pensable. They are friends, protectors and pets to our children. They give us the utmost respect yet we as humans do not return the favour when it comes to over population and unwanted ani- mals. This is where the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) comes in. They provide adop- tion services, spay and neutering and investigate cases of neglect and cru- elty among other things. Working on a shoestring budget, much of the work the SPCA does is reliant on caring people in the community who find value in their services and fundraise to help them continue their work. One of these people is Yoga Bootcamp instructor Katrina Ariel. Katrina is used to spreading joy and positivity in her yoga classes and is now reaching out even farther to host a special one- time by donation yoga class in Riverside Park with all proceeds going to the Kamloops SPCA. “I’m putting on what will be a fun and unique event in Riverside Park to raise money for the SPCA,” she explains. “I teach the Kamloops Yoga Fitness Boot Camp for women which is a hugely suc- cessful and popular program because it makes women feel empowered and teaches them how to get strong in a way that is self honouring, rather than feeling like punishment. I have a long history of caring for animals as well as volunteering at shelters, and have adopted two kitties from the Kamloops SPCA. I donate to the SPCA monthly as well, but hope to raise $2000 or more with this fundraiser, which would be a significant contribution to help the animals that are still looking for fami- lies of their own. The fundraiser event on Wednesday, June 22 at the Band Shell in Riverside Park will be open to everyone (not just women), and will be a similar mix of fun fitness and align- ment-based yoga as my regular camp. There will also be lots of prizes given out, including three months of the yoga boot camp for free!” Katrina hopes to get more than 150 people down to Riverside Park to enjoy her inspirational class as well as raise some much needed funds for the SPCA. that this class is for everyone; men, women and children and is a good chance for all the boy-friends and husbands of women who take her bootcamp to come down and see what it is all about.

“i have a huge space in my heart for animals,” Katrina fin-ishes. “My whole life i have felt connected to nature. animals are so giving, loving and simple compared to humans. as humans

we really need to be responsible stewards. i have two cats from the spCa and this is my way of donating to their ‘pre-school’. i am so grateful to be able to offer

this. The response so far has been wonderful and i am looking for-ward to it. Come down to the park and please bring a yoga mat (or a blanket or towel if you don’t have a mat), as well as a water bottle.”

head down to riverside park on wednesday, June 22 to nurture your mind, body, and spirit as well as support the homeless and unwanted animals of Kamloops. yoga starts at 6:00 p.m. and goes until 7:30 p.m., and please come early to register and donate.

City keeping a close eye on river levelsThe City of Kamloops watches

the levels of the north and south Thompson rivers very closely ev-ery year at this time. The City pre-pares for the rise in river levels by monitoring the snow pillows and the melt in the region as well as current temperatures and precipi-tation levels. The City analyses the river levels by measurements taken throughout the Thomp-son watershed and posts the river levels taken from the overlander bridge on its website at www.ka-mloops.ca/riverlevels.

The City has a three-stage re-sponse to flooding which include a number of activities:

green stage (river level up to 342.7m): City staff inspect riv-er banks, dykes and emergency berms, lower elevation storm sewer outfalls are sealed and re-quired resources (i.e.: sand and bags) are made available. The walkway from riverside park to pioneer park under the Cn bridge is blocked as a safety precaution;

yellow stage (river level

342.7m to 343.8m): More fre-quent inspections, emergency road berms are installed (as re-quired) and additional storm sewer outfalls are sealed;

red stage (river level 343.8m and over): inspections are in-creased as required (includ-ing weekends), and public boat launches are closed.

The City has sand and bag stock-piles for residents to use free of charge and can be picked up at the public works Centre or any Fire hall station.

GENEROUS FOLLIES

The Silver Follies presented a cheque for $1000 to Canadian Mental Health Association’s Emerald House and $473 to the Phoenix Centre’s Out of the Ashes bursary program. Gathered to accept the generous donations are (L-R) Out of the Ashes recipient Brittney Fletcher, Phoenix Centre employee Leann Kopytko, Charlene Eden from Canadian Mental Health Association, Women of the Moose 915 member and bartender Tammy Kiesling, as well as Rickie Bossert, Jeanne Rodrigue and Beverley Lister of the Silver Follies.

Coach wrestled into retirementnorKam secondary school has recently

given special recognition at their year-end athletics banquet to brian dick. brian is one of the long-time teacher coaches who is retiring from norKam.

brian has been the head coach for norKam’s wrestling team for the past thirty plus years! although he is retiring from teaching this year, he still plans on coaching wrestling at both the school and club levels. he has also been consistently involved in coaching and sponsoring the boys and girls rugby teams. he is a coach who helps student-athletes identify their dreams and achieve goals.

brian consistently presents a positive image of coaching and shows respect for officials, opponents, athletes and parents. brian has always recognized that school sport is an extension of the classroom with resulting ethical and moral obliga-tions. he exemplifies everything that is positive about school coaches, school coaching and the spirit of coaching, and has made an outstanding contribution to student-athletes and sport development. brian not only imparts sports skills, assists students in the development and appreciation of fair play, but he also understands the concept of teamwork and works hard in instilling a vital sense of self-worth to his students. he also mixes

practice, skill development, integrity, fair play, respect, and striving for excellence as key ingredients for successful athletic experiences.

The norKam school community thanks brian for all his years of dedication. good luck and enjoy your retirement!

it has been an annual event on the youth soccer calendar for many years, but this year the annual Ka-mloops youth soccer association Mini-soccer Festival had a new name.

The Festival, which took place in early June at various parks around the city, and is now known as the errol wild Memorial Mini-soccer Festival. it involved a total of 145 boys and girls teams in the under-5 to under-10 divisions.

in september of last year, the Kysa board of directors decided to name the Festival after one of the pioneers of the sport in Kamloops, errol wild, who died of heart fail-ure at too young an age, 49, in au-gust of 2009.

wild was a man whose passion for the game and dedication to the welfare of soccer in Kamloops,

both at the youth and senior levels was extraordinary.

each team in the Festival played three or four games over the week-end in a “tournament-like” format, except scores were not recorded

and there was no silverware to be won at end. it’s all about playing for fun. There’s no pressure that comes from having to earn points toward standings and no bragging rights at stake.

Annual mini soccer festival goes wild

Apply to coach youth rep soccerprospective coaches who would

like to put their name forward to coach one of the Kamloops youth soccer association’s (Kysa) rep teams in the 2012 soccer season have until June 15 to submit their application.

The application deadline is earlier than usual this year, as the Kysa is moving its 2012 rep team try-outs to mid-July rather than the usual time of late august.

ideally, head coach candidates

will possess a minimum Commu-nity Coach-senior coaching cer-tification and will have a sound knowledge of teaching the rudi-ments of the game. however, a combination of lesser coaching qualifications combined with ex-perience as an elite level player and/or coach, will be considered.

application forms can be down-loaded from the Kysa web site at www.kysa.net.

The grade 11 & 12 art students (pictured below) from the Kamloops Christian School participated in the “Messages of Hope” art project for the New Life Mission.

Experts on sewing machines and vacuumsThere is something special about

the stores, shops and services on the north shore, and Findlay’s Vacuum and sewing is no excep-tion. The popular Mecca for all things vacuum and sewing relat-ed is owned and operated by patti Montpetit, with help from family and loyal, experienced employees, patti is able to give shoppers to her north shore store exceptional cus-tomer service, quality advice and help them with everything from picking a vacuum to suit their needs to showing them the latest techniques on their line of serger sewing machines.

Joining the family business is pat-ti’s daughter Kaitlyn, who not only is a encyclopaedia on the different kind of sewing machines and their strengths and sewing machines, but is also apprenticing under their very talented sewing machine tech-nician stan rimmer. This august Kaitlyn will start teaching her first class on quilting in a hoop, aptly named ‘hoop sisters’.

“Quilting in a hoop is a beautiful technique that involves embroider-ing separate blocks and then quilt-ing them all together,” explains patti. “all the embroidery is done on a machine and the result is spec-tacular. in addition to this class we also teach sewing education on the first Tuesday and Saturday of each month, embroidery on the second Tuesday and saturday, and serger classes on the third Thursday. stop in to see our course and get more information.”

They will soon be starting their annual inventory sale on sew-ing machines and vacuums and right now they have some great sales on some new, out of the box machines that they used in class. They also have a awesome re-conditioned vacuum sale on right

now. as their new technician has a passion and talent for repairing vacuums. he is also very talent-ed at small appliance repair and welcomes you to bring in yours. “people have started bringing in a lot of different small applianc-es,” says Kaitlyn. “we also see a lot of vacuums, sewing machines, blenders, toasters and microwaves that need repairs.”

“We are so happy,” finishes Patti.

“business is great and we are in the best neighbourhood. everyone is so friendly, the people around here are so amazing, they really are. we love the north shore and will not be going anywhere!”

Kamloops has one of the largest health and wellness communities not only in the province but the whole country. Every year mem-bers of this community, including yogis, massage therapists, danc-ers, reflexologists, dreamworkers and a variety of other practitioners and providers of health and well-ness products join forces and host a series of free workshops, ses-sions and set up information and product booths the giant Interior Wellness Fair.

“We have people coming from all over the city and region,” ex-plains Elizabeth Beeds, Wellness Fair organizer, publisher of popu-lar Interior Wellness Magazine (which was previously known as the Yoga Tree) and owner of Let’s Move Studios where the fair is being held. “Just from the North Shore alone we will have the Breath Integration Counselling & Training Centre who are one of our sponsors and Mystic Dreams will be at the marketplace.”

The annual Interior Wellness Fair is three days of connection, learn-ing and transformation for body, mind and spirit. Admission is free and visitors are welcome to come, look around, learn and talk to all the wonderful vendor and hosts. Not only will you walk away with some of your questions answered but you will learn a lot too!

“If you attended the event last year you’ll know that this is an

amazing weekend of community healing and fun,” continues Eliza-beth. “There will be many great workshops and classes including Breath Integration, Tesla Meta-morphis, Zumba, Auriculotherapy, Reiki, Pilates, Body Management & Live Blood Analysis, Neck & Shoulder Self/Partner Acupressure and more. Come join us and take a workshop or three! There will also be a Friday Night Full Moon Dance and fire dance performance as well as live entertainment, mu-sicians, and belly dancers.

Everything starts Friday, June 17 at 3 pm and stretches through the entire weekend. Friday’s fun includes workshops, opening cer-emonies, performances, classes, a panel on women’s health and an open marketplace where you will be able to find a wide array of wellness products and clothing.

there are worse things a father passing by his son's bed-

room was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then he saw an envelope propped up prominently on the center of the bed. it was addressed, "dad". with the worst premonition, he opened the envelope and read the letter with trem-bling hands:

Dear Dad,it is with great regret and

sorrow that i'm writing you. i had to elope with my new girlfriend because i wanted to avoid a scene with mom and you. i've been find-ing real passion with Joan and she is so nice even with all her piercing, tattoos and her tight motorcycle clothes. but it's not only the passion dad, she's pregnant and Joan said that we will be very happy. even though you don't care for her as she is so much older than

i, she already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter.

she wants to have many more children with me and that's now

one of my dreams too. Joan taught me that

marijuana doesn't really hurt any-one and we'll be growing it for us

and trading it with her friends.don't worry dad.

someday i'm sure we'll be back to visit so you can get to know your grandchildren.Your son, BenjaminP.S. Dad, none of the

above is true. I'm over at the neighbor's house. I just

wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than my report card that's in my desk cen-ter drawer. I love you! Call when it is safe for me to come home.

A baseball hero (sort of...)Coming home from his Little

League championship game, Chuck was all smiles when he was greeted by his dad who asked, “how did you do in your championship game, son?”

“great, dad!” exclaimed

Chuck. “i was responsible for the winning run!”

“really? That’s great news!” remarked his dad. “how did you do it, son?”

“i dropped the ball.”
