IS MISSISSIPPI BURNING? WE KNOW ALABAMA’S SABAN IS FUMING

by Tony OnellionJust when we thought we had the SEC figured out, along comes not one but two extremely unlikely scenarios involving the teams from the Magnolia State. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are the two best teams in the nation. Think about that. THE NATION. Just like Alabama and LSU were three years ago. Forget Florida State. They’re underperforming especially with the

emotional baggage toted by their Heisman winning quarterback, Jameis Winston. Ole Miss might be the better team; Mississippi State has the better quarterback. Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M are out of luck and the SEC East is not even in the discussion.

A former Florida coordinator and Southern Miss head coach have put both Oxford and Starkville (Stark Vegas?) on the map. Towns that previously were known for corn dog comments, drunks, The Grove, 18 miles per hour and the Governor standing in the school house door (Oxford) and for cowbells, bad access roads and lack of pizazz (Starkville) are now the sites for back-to-back College Gameday appearances. Kirk Herbstreit must be beside himself, that denizen of urbane Columbus, Ohio, home of Woody Hayes and Urban Meyers. Starkville might have been aptly named at one time, but their new stadium look and improvements (where else do men’s restrooms have picture windows?) have the football world’s attention.

The Egg Bowl has been the embarrassingly accurate description of the annual football game between these two schools. Both programs have been laying eggs for years, decades even. But this year’s Egg Bowl will involve a golden egg…a ticket to the Football Championship Series four-team round-robin. Maybe both teams will be involved, like LSU and Alabama in 2011.

Both Alabama and LSU have seen the wrath of these programs as have Auburn and Texas A&M. Change is good once in a while and even the most diehard Yellow Hammer or War Eagle fan will acknowledge that fact. LSU fans still must live with the Hat for several more years and continue to wonder how a man who can’t speak adult English can communicate with a bunch of 18 to 22-year olds. We’re used to being usurped by another West team or our own coaches’ stubbornness. Enjoy what you can this year and don’t concern yourself with any major loss of LSU players to the NFL. What might be a concern is possible loss of skill set players to other college teams where their pass-catching abilities might be used for something more than a decoy. The Tigers’ top four receivers are probably the best in the nation but if they can’t get free on patterns, it probably means they don’t get enough reps in practice to be able to to it in a game. Meanwhile, look for a new offensive coordinator in 2015 as Miles lets good buddy Cam Cameron go and Coach Kragthorpe will be leaving once his son’s eligibility is done. Why waste any money on a OC when Miles doesn’t want one? Pounding the rock and defense wins games, but the stadium seats more than 102,000 souls and you won’t see that many there this year, even for the Alabama game. LSU fans are notoriously bad about leaving the stadium early, so why show up at all? This isn’t the collapse of the LSU program by any means but for many thousands of supporters through the years, the mess is in the message. Good luck to the Tigers for the rest of the year and pick up your box lunch at the end of the season.

Deadly Advice

A DEADLY TURN - One fisherman we see on a regular basis here in Slidell is Captain

Dudley Vandenborre, the designer of the “Deadly Dudley” lure series and fisherman

emeritus. Dudley sends much of his product to his customers from my wife’s shipping

and mailing center in the south area of the city and through the years we have come to

know him and his family. Dudley recently had open heart surgery and missed most of

the earlier spring speck runs in the area. We’ve been actively working with Dudley to

grace our reports with his fishing knowledge since last year but pending media projects

and other matters had delayed things.

Until now. Dudley Vandenborre will begin a fishing feature this issue entitled “DEADLY

ADVICE”. Dudley will take your questions about fishing techniques, tackle and fishing

Words to GROW by!CUTTING FIREWOOD NOW MEANS

WARMER RESULTS IN WINTERFirewood cut now will be dry by the time cold weather rolls around. It can take as much as a year for split and stacked firewood interiors to reach an `air dry’ condition, so it’s never to early to cut for the coming winter.

Three to six months of storage under cover should leave wood dry enough for satisfactory use. Most species are suitable for burning, but the heavier, denser-grain hardwoods such as the oaks are best. Caution should be taken against burning pressure-treated wood.

It is best to stack the wood off the ground in an open area to allow air circulation. Covering the wood pile to keep the rain off will speed the drying process. This can be done cheaply by using tin roofing or plastic covering.

When your cutting firewood, safety should be a primary consideration. A chainsaw is a dangerous piece of equipment. Chainsaws cause more than 30,000 accidental injuries each year, mostly because of operator carelessness. Be sure to study saw manuals and wear safety equipment, such as eye protection, gloves and ear protection to safeguard your hearing.

Be sure you know what you’re getting when buying firewood. First, ask if the wood is green or dry. Then check on the amount and price. Wood often can be purchased more cheaply this time of year.

Firewood is frequently advertised for sale by the cord, but the seller usually means a “face” cord, which is not a true cord.

A true cord of wood is a stack 4 feet wide by 4 feet high and 8 feet long, explains the specialist. A face cord is a stack 4 feet high and 8 feet long, but the pieces are only 18 to 24 inches long. From the front, or face, it looks like a cord, but is only one-third of a cord. A pickup-load of wood is sometimes equal to face cord.

Cutting firewood early means that the wood will be drier and lighter, will have fewer insects, will provide maximum Btu, and will produce less dangerous creosote.

Be sure to check all parts of your wood appliance. To reduce the chance of fire hazard, have the chimney cleaned before using it this winter. Chimney fires can be extremely dangerous. They burn many houses each year.

ORNAMENTAL TREES, SHRUBS PROVIDE FALL LANDSCAPE COLOR

Fall is here, and this season reminds us about the wonderful colors that tree and shrub foliage can provide to our landscapes.

Many native trees of Louisiana give good fall color. These include sweet gum, red maple, sassafras, baldcypress, nuttall oak, dogwood, hickory and black gum.

Some introduced or non-native tree species, such as Chinese pistachio, crape myrtle and Bradford pear, also can be used to complement our native selections chosen for colorful foliage.

Two excellent native shrubs for fall foliage color are oakleaf hydrangea and Virginia willow.

A named variety of Virginia willow, also called Virginia sweetspire, is Henry’s Garnet. This Virginia willow has outstanding foliage characteristics and was a Louisiana Select plant this past spring.

Other native shrubs for fall color include blueberries, huckleberries and sumac, the horticulturist says, adding that you could try nandina and Chinese witch hazel (Loropetalum) if you want some introduced species in your landscapes.

Leaf pigmentation in plants is a result of several physiological reactions that occur in response to seasonal temperature and day length changes.

Basically, the formation of a separation occurs within the leaf petiole, resulting in blocking of sugar movement into the leaf. This in turn results in the breakdown of green pigments (chlorophyll) in the leaf, making other pigments, such as yellow, red and orange, more dominant.

Creative landscaping can be done with native and introduced tree and shrub species that provide fall foliage color.

Using native plants, which have beneficial characteristics other than foliage color, is an added bonus. When considering landscape plantings and renovations, remember to consider fall foliage color as a design element.
