NORTHERN WILDERNESS
• From the background fabric, cut a strip
6-1/2” wide.
• If you don’t have a long enough and
wide enough, you can abut a longer
ruler with a shorter to get the width.
• Or line up the cut edge of fabric
with a line on the mat, line up the
½” mark of the ruler with the line
six inches away both at the
bottom of the mat …
• … and at the top of the mat.
• Cut two 6-1/2” squares from the
background strip. (While only
two squares are needed for the
block, the rest of the strip may as
well be cut as they will be used
for the border).
• From the purple fabric cut two 6-1/2”
squares.
• On the wrong side of the
background squares, mark
• a diagonal line.
• Alternate method of making the
half square triangles would be to
cut 6” strips and cut half square
triangles with the Easy Angle
ruler.
• Match the background squares
with the purple squares, right
sides together.
• Stitch ¼” away from the line on
both sides.
• Cut the squares apart on the
drawn line.
• Press the seam toward the
purple triangle.
• The square should measure 6”.
If it doesn’t trim it to 6”.
• The four squares need to be laid
out in mirror image pairs.
• Cut the squares into 1-1/2” strips. I
like to cut down from larger
segments. From each 6” square cut
at 4-1/2”, 3” and 1-1/2”.
• Switch each mirror image slice
working from the outside.
• Then the next strip…
• …and the next
• and the center strip.
• Stitch the strips together.
• Finger press the seams in one
mountain unit to the right and the
other to the left
• Stitch the two mountain
units together. Press
toward the top block.
• Back view of the block.
• Remember to check the
directions for the cutting size for
the block borders. The side
borders are longer on this block
than on any of the others.
• Follow the directions for the
applique.
