What is the Northern Coniferous Forest?

Coniferous forests are made up of conifer trees, that closely grow together and can withstand immense cold

Page 4: Northern Coniferous forest

Temperature The average monthly temperature is -

40°F to 68°F, average summer temperature is 50°F

Yearly and monthly rain and snow fall

300 to 900 ml per year of rain In the winter there is always snow on the

ground

Vegetation Coniferous-evergreen trees (trees that

produce cones and needles; some needles remain on the trees all year long)

Uniqueness Although life is not as rich in coniferous forests as

it is in temperate forests or rainforests, there are a number of species that thrive within them. Coniferous forests are made up of conifer trees which have needle shaped leaves and grow very close to one another. Although conifers are excellent at withstanding the cold, the pine needles are acidic and this is passed into the soil when the pine needles fall to the ground. This means that only plants that can grow in acidic conditions will survive in coniferous forests. Also they are the least affected by humans.
