NORTHERN CITY LIFE
The Industrial Revolution completely changed the way people lived.
Families before the Industrial Revolution:
• Lived further apart• Were self sufficient
Because of the Industrial Revolution. . .
. . .people moved to cities to be near factories.
CITY LIFE
IMMIGRANTS
Immigrants from other countries increased in number. Why?• They did not have to have $ to pay
for land• The jobs required little training.
FIRE! SEWAGE
THESE GROWING CITIES HAD NEW DANGERS:
Poor Roads
Disease spread quickly
Factory LifeFactory shifts were usually 12 hour shifts
A BARGAIN FOR FACTORIES
Women and children earned ½ the wage (pay) that the men did for the same job.
Small children were useful because they could climb on the machinery.
Their little hands could reach parts that an adult’s could not.
There was no workmen’s compensation or health insurance, so if you were hurt on the job, you would probably be fired.
All members of the family worked in factories.
