Letter from the VPs: 2019 Year in Review; 2020 Preview 2019 was a year of growth and change for our neighborhood association. Last January, NEWCNA was on the cusp of throwing in the towel. Seeing value in continuing this organization, we agreed to take the reins. Little did we know what was in store! Several new neighborhood signs, a park renovation, four quarterly meetings, two neighborhood picnics, a neighborhood garage sale, and one deep-dive into bylaws later, things are looking good for NEWCNA!
2020 will be another big year for us. We are moving our quarterly meetings to Saturday mornings to improve attendance. In April and October, the neighborhood picnics will serve as the quarterly meeting. For July we are planning a neighborhood party at a local event center.
To help make these plans a realty, the board hopes that you will participate in the association and consider a leadership role. We will hold our 2020 officer election on Jan. 18. We need to fill the following positions:

What is it? You may have wondered about the dividers installed at the intersection of Berrywood and Oak Haven Cove. According to the City’s Active Transportation Department, they are a solution to a nearby resident’s garage flooding.
The geometry of the road was causing the flooding. These “delineators” are placed on rubber mounts which block water, diverting runoff to prevent flooding.
Fun fact! This is the City’s first deployment of this new tool!

Have you filed for your Homestead Exemption? If you bought your home in 2019, the filing deadline for requesting a 2020 Homestead Exemption is April 30. If you bought your home after Jan. 1, you will have to wait until 2021 to file your exemption. There is no fee to file and you do not have to hire anyone to file for you.
You may need to refile your homestead exemption if you had a name change to your deed recorded. Also, you can apply for an over 65 exemption at any time during the year (even if only one owner is over 65!).
You can search other exemptions and forms by visiting traviscad.org.

NEWCNA is the Northeast Walnut Creek Neighborhood Association, a 501(c) 7 organization supported by the residents of three neighborhoods: North Oaks, Four Seasons, and Hillside. Anyone can join! Annual dues are $20. That’s only $1.60 a month! The fee is used to pay for newsletters, meeting rentals, signs, picnics, beautification projects, membership stickers, and more. We hold spring and fall picnics, an annual garage sale, and yard of the month awards. We would love to have you join us!

Zoning and Code Update By Vanessa Matocha
Trash Along Wedgewood
I am continuing to work with the City of Austin Code Department on the amount of trash being discarded along Wedgewood. Many of you let me know about the chair, car bumper, and shopping carts recently dumped along the Peterson property. I got a response from the Austin Code Department that stated cases are opened within five days of a report and closed as soon as possible. (The bumper had been there for 20 days before removal.) Austin Code is also reviewing the camera footage along Wedgewood to help prevent future illegal dumping. The Code Department received additional help from the Community Court to remove bags of trash from the area in October.
Peterson Property Update
In speaking with the broker for the Peterson property, there was a closing scheduled for the sale of the property on Dec. 20. However, there is concern this closing will not go through. If it does, the property is still zoned for single-family dwellings with the top 5-acres reserved for commercial. Stay tuned for updates via email.
APD Officer Adam Soliz stated the criminal trespass notice was signed by the Peterson representative to allow the Austin Police Department to remove those who are illegally trespassing and camping. He again encouraged residents to report any sighting of individuals entering or leaving the Peterson property to 3-1-1.

We no longer need to venture far from home for entertainment! On Dec. 12, the new AMC theater opened at Parmer Lane and I-35 where the Sears was. This AMC theater has heated, power recliners, online ticketing with reserved seats, Dolby Cinema sound, food delivery to your seat during the show, and MacGuffins Bar.
P. Terrys is building a new facility in the same shopping center near the Floor & Décor.
In 2020, PINSTACK will be opening their newest location at 500 W. Canyon Ridge Dr. near HEB and JC Penney’s. PINSTACK offers bowling, a rock-climbing wall, laser tag, bumper cars, and video and virtual reality games, as well as arcade classics and pinball machines. (There is also a 16-person foosball table!)
PINSTACK will have a restaurant, a bar, a patio, and lane-side dining. There are also entertainment areas with AV capabilities for private parties.

Neighborhood Entry Sign Repair In the last edition, we showcased the new neighborhood entry signs. Unfortunately, the sign and Berrywood and I-35 didn’t last long! Thankfully we had some reserve funds. The folks at Hightech Signs were able to replace and relocate the new sign.
