HishamWattar is worried.For the past month,

the Syrian-born NorthVancouver man has beentrying to convince hisyoungest niece not to risk adeadly journey with humansmugglers.

So far, hes talked her intostaying in Egypt, where vemembers ofWattars familyhave been waiting to come toCanada since they ed Syriaand were granted refugeestatus three years ago.

But faced with repeatedbureaucratic delays, theyoung woman is losing hopethat she will ever get here.Lately, shes been temptedto try a more dangerousjourney to Europe onenow being taken by waveafter wave of Syrian refugees,from a country wheremillions have been displaced.

Its a journey similar tothe one attempted by thefamily of Alan Kurdi, thethree-year-old boy whoselifeless body was captured ina photograph that shockedthe world after the boat hewas in capsized, drowningmany on board.

Kurdis aunt inCoquitlam had planned tohelp the boy and his familyto come to Canada asrefugees.

Wattar understands thefrustration that propelsfamilies to take desperatechances.

VisitingWestVancouveronThursday, Liberal leaderJustinTrudeau said aLiberal government wouldbring over 25,000 Syrianrefugees in the next fewmonths, whichTrudeauestimated would cost about$100 million.The planwould involve hiring morecase workers to staff ofcesset up in Europe.

As Canadians our

hearts have gone out to themillions and millions ofpeople who are struggling,he said. Theres a lot weshould do and we shoulddo now.

Wattar, who runs BestFalafel inVancouver,emigrated to Canadahimself in the 1980s undera business immigrantprogram.Three other familymembers joined him laterunder a family reunicationprogram.

Other family memberswho stayed in Syria livednormal lives until thatcountry was torn apart bywar.When student protestsstarted on the streets ofDamascus during the ArabSpring,Wattars 22-year-oldnephew was among them.Authorities reacted swiftly,arresting the young man.The secret service raided thefamily home several times.They came in with machineguns and searched theentire house.They smashedeverything and threw iteverywhere, saidWattar.

They knew it was time toget out.

WithWattars help, hissister, two nieces and two ofhis nieces children ed toEgypt.

Because private citizenscant sponsor refugeeson their own,WattarapproachedMoore in 2012,asking if the church in hisneighbourhood would be

able to help.Wattar said itmade no difference thathe was a Muslim askinga Christian church forassistance.

In October 2013,Wattar and Moore startedthe process of lling outpaperwork.When they gotclearance to le a formalapplication, in July 2014,they were quickly approvedand told the forms werebeing sent to Cairo forfurther processing.Thatswhen the wait began.

In March,Wattarcontacted his MPAndrewSaxton and asked forhelp. Saxton promisedhed take up the case withImmigration Minister ChrisAlexander.

But little has apparentlycome of that.

Last month,Moore andWattar received a letter from

the federal governmentsaying they should expectto wait another 42 months.Thats when his 27-year-oldniece started to lose hopethat the family would everget to Canada.

His niece began talkingabout paying smugglers totake a boat to Italy, he said.

Thats the one they callthe death boat, saidWattar.Its the longest (journey)and the most dangerous.

Moore said heunderstands the niecesfrustration as the family sitsstateless, unable to work, goto school or go on with theirlives. Weve already beenat this 18 months, he said.Shes watching her life passher by.

The problems facedbyWattar and Moore willing sponsors whohave been prevented from

bringing refugees to Canadathrough bureaucraticdelays are ones thefederal government hasfaced increasing criticismfor since the photo of littleAlan Kurdi went around theworld.

Seeing the picture ofthe boy drowned and facedown in the sand washeartbreaking, saidWattar.

How did we get to that?How did we let these thingshappen? he asked.

For Moore, it was thephoto of the rescue workercarrying the lifeless childthat struck him hard.

Im the rescue worker,he said. And that boycould not be rescued.Thats what hit me.Thatskind of us. I dont want to

be at that point.Moore said its important

to him to complete thesponsorship forWattarsfamily. The journey theybegan is a journey that waspromised to them, he said.

Ive had people callme and say they want tosponsor a refugee.

His advice: Be ready fora big task.

Flanked by localLiberal candidates, andaccompanied by a phalanxof national campaignstaff and media,Trudeaustopped at the dock ofWestVancouvers John LawsonPark pledging to increasethe amount of Canadasmarine and coastalprotected areas by 10 percent by 2020.

Trudeau also promisedto reinstate $40 million hesaid has been cut from thefederal governments oceanscience and monitoringprogram. The war onscience ends, he said.

The Liberal leader

also said he supports amoratorium on oil-tankertrafc along B.C.s northerncoast, repeating his positionopposing the NorthernGateway pipeline project.

The Great BearRainforest is not a placefor a crude oil pipeline, hesaid.

ButTrudeau duckedquestions of whether hesupports other projects thathave been environmentallycontroversial, like theKinder Morgan pipelineexpansion project and theWoodbre LNG projectproposed for nearby HoweSound.

As a scientist, I am veryconcerned about climatechange, said Quarmby in apress statement. Quarmbyadded the NEB review ofthe project has becomethoroughly discredited.

The whole reviewprocess has become anapproval process, shestated.

Dear Editor:In 2012, when our landlord decided to let his

daughter and her family move into the Dundaravehouse that my family and I had been renting forthe ve previous years, we decided to rent a nice1948 cottage in Horseshoe Bay as our new home.Horseshoe Bay is a lovely place with a lucky name,and it was very quiet, seemingly untouched by theonslaught of apparently unregulated developmentinfecting MetroVancouver, including much of theNorth Shore. Fast forward three years and theluck is starting to run out for Horseshoe. Duringthe past year, For Sale signs have popped up andvanished with increasing frequency in Upperand Lower Horseshoe. Quaint houses/cottageshave rapidly been vanishing, replaced by the kindof modern monsters one can now nd in everyLower Mainland neighborhood.

But the worst result of all this development isthe noise. I used to do my Ph.D-style work fromhome once in a while (UBC is a long haul), butnow I no longer can, unless I permanently pinheadphones to my ears and crank up the classicalmusic volume.A rare ultra-modern metal framehouse has been under construction next door forover a year now, with no seeming end in sight.(Drilling into metal frames makes a lovely sound,

especially at 7:30 a.m.) And another house iscoming very soon directly next to the metal-framemonster, and then surely there will be another.

At least Horseshoe Bay residents no longerneed to worry about bears coming to town.

Soon my family and I will be on the runagain, looking for a pleasant but affordable placeto live that is at least marginally within reachof my workplace. Something tells me that thecombination of pleasant plus affordable plus nearwork is going the way of the dodo bird for mostMetroVancouver residents, even for professionals

such as myself who would not be facing thissituation in most other places (except in London,Hong Kong and such).

The good folks running the North Shoreneighbourhoods should sit down and ponder thishighly troubling situation in earnest.They shouldlook well beyond the dollar signs, and decidewhat they want to see at the foot of the CoastalMountains on the still lovely northern shores ofBurrard Inlet in ve, 10 and 15 years.Walter CichaWestVancouver

TappedoutThanks to recent rainstormsand a drop in our own waterconsumption,MetroVancouver hastaken us from Stage 3 watering restrictionsdown to Stage 2.But before we all go dashing for a

sprinkler, it would be good if we tooksome time to reect on the lessons theselast few parched months have taught us.MetroVancouver has pledged to review

the entire water conservation plan and welook forward to seeing the results.Metro utilities committee chairman

and City of NorthVancouver MayorDarrell Mussatto has said all optionsare on the table, including water meters.Municipalities that have them have beenrepeatedly shown to be more judiciouswith their water.Wed also like to get a better handle

on industrial and business water usage.Theres some question about whether wemoved to Stage 3 soon enough and weheard plenty of complaints arguing therestrictions on what was allowed and whatwasnt were totally arbitrary.Its only prudent that Metro should

review its policies after one of the worstlocal droughts on record comes to an end,but we should also be looking to our ownhabits.Our water system is AAA expensive

infrastructure and so we want to be dam-sure that were putting it to its best use.That might not include dumping ourdrinking water, which is the envy of muchof the world, onto our lawns.No doubt weve got some rainy months

ahead of us. Lets see if we can be betterprepared for the next hot, dry summer.

Dear Editor:Regarding SpiritTrail alterations to Marine

Drive at Gleneagles elementary, Im wonderingwhy a section of the alteration was made sonarrow. In a day and age when dedicated lanesor appropriately wide enough roads are builtto accommodate vehicles and cyclists, theyhave made the lane so narrow.The fact that itis where children are dropped off and pickedup for school makes it even more of a hazardfor cyclists.This is on one of the most used

The apparent closenessof the federal electionmay deal a major setbackto those advocatingthat people votestrategically on Oct.19 in order to defeat theHarper government.

With polls (for whatthey are worth, whichadmittedly may not bemuch) suggesting there isa genuine three-way racebetween the major politicalparties, neither the NDPnor the federal Liberalscan make the case that theother should get out of theway in order not to split thenon-Conservative vote.

And consideringthe polls are oftencontradictory, its hardto see how the NDP orthe Liberals can use themas evidence that oneof them should be thenatural alternative to theConservatives.

A great example ofwhy the argument tovote strategically may fallat can be seen in thenew riding ofVancouverGranville. If the ridinghad existed in the 2011

election, the Conservativeswould have won with just35.4 per cent of the vote, orabout 2,300 votes ahead ofthe second-place Liberalsand more than 5,100 votesahead of the NDP.

A left-leaning activistgroup called Leadnow istargeting theVancouverGranville riding as onewhere people should votestrategically to defeat theConservatives. But both theNDP and the Liberals arerunning credible candidates either of whom wouldbe worthy additions tothe House of Commons and its impossible for

anyone to make a credibleargument that one of themshould be shunned over theother.

The Liberals can makethe case that they have, onpaper at least and usingactual past voting results,the best chance to defeatthe Conservatives.TheNDP counters that recentpolls (those unreliablethings) show that partyis more popular in thisprovince than the Liberals.

In other words, bothparties could be rightand both could be wrong.Whats a voter to think?There simply is no provenevidence that one party isbetter positioned to defeatthe Conservatives.

Another B.C. ridingwhere the idea of strategicvoting becomes a veryconfusing one is the ridingofVictoria, currently heldby the NDP.

But the Green Partycame oh-so-close towinning this riding in abyelection in 2012, losingby just 1,100 votes.

In this campaign, itshard to say which candidate

the NDPs MurrayRankin or the GreensJoanne Roberts has themost residential campaignsigns in sight (I disregardsigns on public propertysuch as boulevards; a signon someones lawn is anindication of a committedvoter), which suggests it isa competitive race betweenthe two of them.

So how is someoneable to gure out how tovote strategically in thissituation?There is a decentchance the Conservatives(who nished third herein 2011) could win with avery low vote count, butwhy should anyone expect(or demand) that votersfor either the NDP or theGreens, given both partiesapparent strength, abandontheir party to embraceanother in order to beatHarpers candidate?

This is another problemwith strategic voting. It askspeople to vote againstsomething rather than forsomething. Other thanpolitical activists, I cant seemany people particularlyolder voters, who may

have been voting for aparticular party for decades putting aside one setof principles in favour ofmaking sure a party theyvenever supported scores avictory on election day.

Most voters are notclosely attuned to thepolitical scene, and paylittle attention to electioncampaigns until near theend of them. Parties canget excited if 1,000 peopleshow up at a campaignrally in a particular riding,but that convenientlyignores the fact that means44,000 voters (in a 45,000voter strong riding) stayedaway.

And unless somethinghappens in this campaignthat suggests that eitherthe NDP or the Liberalsare demonstrably andunquestioningly betterpositioned to beat theConservatives, both partiessupporters will likely stayaway from strategic votingas well.

Court told IvanHenry battles PTSD, anxiety

Ivan Henrysincarceration resultedin him suffering froma paranoid delusiondisorder and, since hisrelease from prison,Henry has had symptomsof post-traumatic stressdisorder and high levels ofanxiety, a judge was toldTuesday.

Henry, a NorthVancouver resident whospent 27 years behind barsafter being wrongfullyconvicted of a series of sexoffences againstVancouverwomen, rst startedmanifesting a psychoticillness when he was arrestedfor the sex crimes in 1982,said Dr. Adrian Grounds, aforensic psychiatrist.

Grounds, who wasdescribed by Henryslawyer as a leading experton wrongful convictions,said that from his arrestuntil his conviction in 1983,Henry was overwhelmedby the charges against himand developed complex

paranoid ideas while hewas in Oakalla prison.

He thought the oor(of his cell) was vibratingand some machinery underthe cell was causing this.He described thinking thecell was moving as if onrails. He said this happenedthroughout his time inOakalla.

Grounds said itwas the beginning of apsychotic illness and toldB.C. Supreme CourtChief Justice ChristopherHinkson that the psychosiscontinued after hed beenconvicted and sentenced.

Under questioningfrom Henrys lawyer JohnLaxton, Grounds said thatwhile he was in prison,Henry experienced a veryconsiderable fear for hissafety and on one occasionwas assaulted.

That chronic fear wasone problem.The secondwas the separation from histwo daughters, the manyyears of lack of contactbetween them.That was asource of stress.

A third problem

arose when his motherstopped visiting himin 2001. Grounds saidHenry believed shed beensubjected to a strip searchby prison authorities.

Since his release fromprison in 2010, Henry hashad symptoms of post-

traumatic stress disorder,said the psychiatrist, whointerviewed Henry for 14hours in March and alsointerviewed a close friendof Henry and Henrys onesurviving daughter,TanyaOlivares, a NorthVancouverresident.

Henry has hadnightmares of his time inprison and very high levelsof anxiety, believing thathe might be set up bypolice and re-arrested, saidGrounds.

Despite his problems,Henry has shownremarkable resilience butwill require ongoing therapythat may need to continuefor a long period of time,he said.

Grounds also describedHenrys early troubledlife, noting that Henryhad had a deprived andunstable upbringing, hadexperienced victimization asa child and had very poorrelationships with others.

Henry was rstconvicted of an offence atthe age of 16 and until hisarrest in connection withthe sex offences, had spenthalf his life in prison.

Prior to the 1982 arrest,there were some indicationsof stability and maturation,as he was employed inconstruction and was seeinghis two daughters, saidGrounds.

How his life would haveprogressed had he not beenarrested is speculative,but the work and familycommitments would haveserved to protect himagainst further offending,

said Grounds.In 1983 Henry was

convicted of 10 sex offencesagainst eight women.He was designated adangerous offender andjailed indenitely. Hemaintained his innocencebut his attempts to get anappeal went nowhere until2006, when the criminaljustice branch appointed aspecial prosecutor to lookat whether a miscarriage ofjustice had occurred.

The B.C. Court ofAppeal released him on bailand in 2010 found that hedbeen wrongfully convicted.

Henry is in court nowseeking compensationfrom the provincial, federalandVancouver municipalgovernments, allegingpolice were negligent andthe prosecutors failed todisclose material to him attrial.

It wasnt long afterMikeDarbyshire started teachingkayaking in Deep Cove that hetook up the sport of stand uppaddleboarding.

Also a passionate surfer, hequickly realized the opportunitythe activity afforded in terms ofoffering him a chance to enjoy a tasteof surng at home in Deep Cove,obviously lacking in wave action, andviewed it as a means of combininghis two passions.

As I started doing it, I startedto really like all the different aspectsof it: the fact that you can race, youcan go surng inTono, you cango down the Capilano River or theSeymour River, you can do yoga,you can do distance paddling, youcan do overnight trips.Thats whatsbeen cool about it for me.No matterwhat kind of person you are, whatkind of goal you have, through thepaddleboard you can get out thereand do it, the 28-year-old NorthVancouver resident says.

Today Darbyshire is a Starboard-sponsored stand up paddleboarderand serves as operations managerfor Deep Cove Kayak. Hes alsothe brainchild behind Board theFjord, a Stand Up PaddleboardRace presented by Deep CoveKayak in its fth year, open to bothelite and recreational racers. Last

years event saw more than 100people participate and according toorganizers, its the biggest stand uppaddleboarding event in GreaterVancouver.This years edition is setfor Sunday, Sept. 20 in Deep Cove.

The event was founded inresponse to the growing popularityof stand up paddleboard racing.Deep Cove Kayak has a long historyof involvement in kayak racing, forinstance for the last 17 years hasbeen presenting weeklyTuesdaynight races in Deep Cove, saysDarbyshire.When paddleboardingstarted to come along they hada few people who were gettinginto racing and wanted to offersomething similar for the burgeoningcommunity. I think its veryunique in that way. I dont know anyother race that is quite as scenic andthat has the beauty in the race coursethe way ours does, he says.

In addition to the 14-km course(the course record of which isaround 90 minutes), those lookingfor something more recreationalin nature can choose from shortercourse options seven and fourkm in length.A four-person coedsprint relay (surfboard class onlywith boards provided), will also beoffered, along with a one-km kidsrace. as our server put it: Itbecomes a bit of a lottery

who gets served rst.We obviously didnt

do too well in that lotterybecause almost an hourlater we were still waitingfor our breakfast whilefolks at neighbouringtables had already come,eaten and gone.

We were reassured, withan apologetic explanation,that our meal would beserved soon and it arrivedshortly thereafter.

In due course, I askedfor the bill. But whenI turned over the pieceof paper, I saw this

hand-written message:Breakfast is on the housetoday.We apologize forthe wait! Hope you have awonderful day! Thank youfor your patience!

My dining companionand I were truly surprised;we hadnt suggested orexpected anything like this.

When I asked to see themenu so I could calculatewhat the tip would havebeen, the server suggestedthat really wasntnecessary. However, I feltshe shouldnt lose outjust because the meal had

become complimentary;she had done her job well.

And obviously ourpatient and understandingmanner had also yielded apositive result.

So the next time apurchase of goods and/orservices falls short, ndout why.

And my hunch is thatmore than a few peopleare breathing a whole loteasier than they were a fewweeks ago.Yes, were aboutto celebrate what may turnout to be one of the bestvintages to date in B.C.syoung history, but thedrought just experiencedcould have had seriousimplications for the industry.

When res raged oneither side of Oliver, allit would have taken wasa slight shift in the windto consume some of thelongest-established vines inthe south Okanagan.

The good news is, with(hopefully) the worst of there season behind us thedamage in the OkanaganValley was light, with little if

any risk of smoke taint for2015.

Wine growing can bea tenuous affair on manylevels. If you were luckyenough to take in the MainEvent atTop Drop this weekyou might have (shouldhave) tasted the wines fromChateau Musar. In spite ofall odds (including 15 yearsof Lebanons civil war), theBekaaValley winery hasmanaged to make everyvintage except one (1976)since its founding in 1939.

The late owner-winemaker Serge Hochar,who put Chateau Musaron the world wine map,brought grapes by truckthrough the war zone tohis Beirut winery. (I waslucky enough to meet himin 1998).You can ndChateau Musars agshipblend of old vines CabernetSauvignon, Carignan andCinsault at BCLS andsome private stores, whileKitsilanos Supermarinepours Chateau Musar Rosby the glass.

A year ago this week, Iwas in Languedoc, tastingsome excellent wines atDomaine Le Clos du Serres,on the wild and rocky newlydeclared AOCTerrassesde Larzac, not far fromMontpellier.

When our group arrivedthere was a real buzz at thewinery with a palpable senseof busyness and expectationin the air as the harvestwas just getting underway.As we tasted through thewonderfully structuredblends (including Clos duSerres Les Maros 2012, 92points), the balmy weatherstarted to change and thewinds picked up.

Suddenly, almost withoutwarning, the storm hit witha vengeance. Rain lashedsideways. Plastic bucketsawaiting the pickers by thevines were hurled across theyard.The storm turned outto be one of a series resultingin ooding throughout theregion with a devastatingimpact on agriculture.

After a turbulent year formany in the Okanagan andelsewhere,Thanksgivingmay just be a whole lot moremeaningful.

Peter Pratts solution forNorth Shore homeownerswanting to downsize wasfound in his own backyard.

It began with therestoration of his familyhome, originally designedand built inWestVancouverby his father, architect NedPratt, in 1951.

Ned Pratt was aprominent member of aninformal mix of artists,artisans and architects colleagues, friends and rivals who manifested theirvision of art and architectureinto the post and beamstyle known asWest Coastmodern.

In the early 1950s peoplewere making their way tothe North Shore, attractedby large lots at affordableprices. Post and beam designmade the most of the areasdramatic natural landscape.The simplicity andexibility of post and beamconstruction made economicsense. Built for $10,000, thehouse Ned designed for hisfamily was also intended todemonstrate an affordableconstruction option for thesenew families.

Muriel May, sales agentfor British Properties Ltd.,considered a $10,000price tag too cheap for theneighbourhood.As Peterrecalls, she tried to put thekibosh on Neds plan tobuild, but he managed towin the day.

Raised in the companyof creative professionalswho were dening themodernist style, Peterchose architecture as hisprofession. He continuedhis studies in Japan and inGreece and developed aninternational practice.

Peter was working on a

project in Kuala Lumpurwhen he took on thechallenge of restoring hisfamily home, 60 years afterit was built. It was a leap offaith.

I was away so much,working, he recalls, thatI had to make decisions ata distance without beingsure of the consequences ofthose decisions. Like everycreative project this one hadits moments. In the end, itworked out nicely becausethe design fundamentals posts, beams and four-by-eight inll panels easilyaccommodates bothexpansion and contraction ofthe structure.

The house, which hadexpanded over time toapproximately 3,000 squarefeet, was scaled back bymore than half, to about1,200 square feet, yet theintegrity of the originaldesign was preserved.

As the restorationprogressed, Peter designedand built a second house onthe property. He set himselfthe task of designing a housethat, while small in area, feelsspacious.

In the new house, witha footprint of 1,150 squarefeet, every aspect of thedesign has been thoughtfullyconsidered and executed. Ithought of a cabin on a boat,where everything must haveits place, he says.

In Peters home, thebedrooms, service andstorage area is standardstick-built construction.Thekitchen and living section,built on post and beamprinciples and modiedby modern technology,resonates with the design ofthe original house.The livingroom, anchored at both

ends by a replace, opensto the natural landscape.The generous use of glasserases the division betweeninside and outside. Thereare views wherever you arein the house.You feel youreoutside, says Peter.

Spacious, airy,comfortable and efcient,the new house links withthe restored original bya covered walkway andcourtyard.

In 1951,Ned designeda post and beam prototypethat would be livable andaffordable for growingfamilies. Sixty years later,with a smaller houseseamlessly integrated withthe original on the sameproperty, Peter has createdan option for people wantingto downsize.

Adding a smallerhouse to a property is analternative for empty-nesters.A separate dwelling mightbe for family or guests, fora caretaker or for rentalincome.Depending on thehouse design, the primaryhouse can be reduced insize.We must take ouremotional attachment tofamiliar surroundings intoconsideration.The additionof a small house would allowpeople to continue living athome, enjoying their gardensand their neighbourhood,he says.
