I am honored to represent our community as the North Mason Chamber ofCommerce 2014 Chairman of the Board. As the leader of this vibrantorganization, my intention is simple – to do my best at this chamber to helppeople come together, get business, and make it a very positive experience. That’smy whole agenda. That will be my legacy.
As a resident and small-business owner, I understand the challenges involved inmaintaining, growing and managing a successful business, especially in a ruralarea. My family has enjoyed our property on the North Shore of Hood Canalsince 1945, and I started my first painting company in 1982. Through the years,I have learned the value in building relationships throughout Mason County andbeyond, and organizations such as our chamber provide the avenue for me to dojust that.
Our monthly luncheons and business after hours events provide the stage for our280 members to meet and share ideas. In fact, our members often tell me howmuch they appreciate our low-key, informal style, which is driven by ourmembership itself as we represent such a wide range of business interests. At ourmonthly luncheons, you may be seated next to a government official on one sideand a personal trainer on the other – one in a suit and tie and one in workoutshorts. As a professional painter, I’m happy to report that I feel comfortablestopping in at a chamber event as part of my workday, sometimes in my workclothes. After all, I’m a member. That’s what I am first – a member.

Belfair License has been serving North Masonand the surrounding area since 2000. It is awholly owned subsidiary of the chamberproviding vehicle and vessel licensing services,fishing and hunting licenses, marriage licensesand notary public services on behalf of thecounty and the state. There is a nominal servicefee that is added to the state and county fees formost services, which assists in the promotion ofthe North Mason Chamber of Commerce.

The North Mason School District’s motto is “To Educate, Empower and Inspire All Students.”
The motto comes from our district’s strategic plan,developed with the participation of over 100community members and many staff members. Weexpect all students to meet or exceed high academicstandards by acquiring the knowledge and skills essentialfor success on state and national assessments, in post-secondary education, the world of work and citizenship.While the motto is simple to remember, it is anenormous task. Fortunately, the district has a highlyprofessional and dedicated staff and a community that isengaged in and supportive of the schools.
Parents, community members and local businesses offerstrong support for the district, which consistently passesschool levies including a $49 million capital projectsbond that is allowing us to build a NEW HIGHSCHOOL opening fall 2015, fully modernize thecurrent high school to become a quality middle school,and complete several other important safety andmechanical improvements across the district.
Kids who go to school here are lucky. It is a beautifulplace to live, work and go to school. The district servesthe families living in our semi-rural area including thetowns of Allyn, Belfair, Tahuya and Grapeview, as wellas Dewatto and the tri-lakes area of Mission, Tiger andPanther Lakes. The district has a comprehensive highschool, one middle school, two elementary schools andtwo alternative programs meeting the needs of 2,200students.
Parents and community members are actively involved in ourvolunteer programs and many community groups partner with thedistrict to support families beyond basic education. Through thegenerosity of the community, last year’s seniors received nearly $1 million in scholarships to higher education.
We are proud to have successfully improved student performance incore subjects while protecting our liberal arts values of educating “thewhole child” and providing a large number of clubs, activities andathletic programs that engage over 75 percent of our students. We arefinding ways to increase services to students and families while beingconservative stewards of taxpayer money. Staff members are helpingstudents master a much stronger set of basic skills as well as becomingindependent, complex thinkers able to keep up with a dynamic world.
With our community, we are working to make sure our schools aregood places to learn. We are succeeding.

For those who live and work in North Mason, world class healthcare is available right here. Whether you are looking for aprimary care physician, a no-wait doctor visit or urgent carewhen moments count, you can find it all conveniently located inBelfair. Harrison Belfair was created in partnership with NorthMason Public Hospital District No. 2. The campus beganserving patients in April 2009 with 12-hour urgent care sevendays a week; Harrison HealthPartners Belfair Primary Care onweekdays; and outpatient lab and imaging services.
To the north, Harrison Bremerton serves as the medical center'sacute-care center and home to cardiovascular services, includingopen-heart surgery, oncology, critical care, inpatient andoutpatient surgery, orthopedics, rehabilitation, a sleep center,and 24/7 emergency care.
At this campus, some of the region’s most experienced doctors,nurses and other health care professionals are all convenientlyavailable every day of the year. For emergencies big and small,the Mason County Fire District works with Harrison, as well asother area hospitals, such as St. Anthony in Gig Harbor andMason General Hospital in Shelton, to help stabilize andtransport patients when time and care really count. We arefortunate that our local community supports our fire districts byconsistently passing levies so that the districts can invest in thelatest triage and life-saving equipment.

Since 1854, 42 elected or appointed individuals have served asSheriff of Mason County. In November of 2006, Sheriff CaseySalisbury was elected as Mason County Sheriff.
Since then, Belfair, Allyn and the surrounding northern portionof the county have experienced tremendous population growthand new business development. Examples include theconstruction of the Harrison Hospital Primary and Urgent CareFacility, modifications to State Route 3 and sewer development inboth Allyn and Belfair. Combined, these and other commercialdevelopments have created an extraordinary policing challenge forthe Mason County Sheriff ’s Office.
Sheriff Salisbury was successful in opening a dedicated precinct inBelfair in 2007, but due to multiple challenges including severebudget cuts, was able to operate the facility for only one year.
Thanks to a partnership with a local family, the Sheriff ’s Officewas able to maintain a substation for patrol deputies andvolunteers to work from, but not as a north precinct office.
In 2013, the Sheriff ’s efforts proved successful, and today anequitable distribution of staff, based on population in thenorthern part of the county, operates out of this new facility inBelfair.
Chief Ryan Spurling has taken the reigns as the first ChiefDeputy for Belfair. He has completed a 25-year career with theWashington State Patrol and a 22-year career in the military,serving in the United States Marine Corps and the United StatesArmy Reserves. Chief Spurling also has a degree in BusinessManagement and Criminal Justice.

The Theler Community Center andWetland Trails grew out of a gift to thechildren and people of Belfair from long-timeresident Sam Theler. His will included abequest to provide local children and citizenswith a “gymnasium and/or [recreation]center… [to] be used as much as feasible forpublic gatherings and meetings.” Sam’soriginal gift now includes the communitycenter, a wildlife preserve and a recreationpark enjoyed by thousands of visitors eachyear.
Located at the head of Washington’s scenicHood Canal, the Theler Wetlands featuremore than three miles of interpretivewalking trails, a popular spot for runnersand joggers, or those who simply seek a
refreshing stroll in nature. Photographyenthusiasts enjoy a kaleidoscope ofopportunities to capture the wonder ofnature. The trails give access to plants, birdsand animals in their natural habitats –forests, wetlands, saltwater and freshwatermarshes, swamps and river estuaries. Fourseparate trails are open to the public free ofcharge during daylight hours, seven days aweek.
The Theler Community Center andWetland Trails offer recreational, educationaland social opportunities for everyone, and ahost of volunteer opportunities for localresidents. Visitors are asked to note that petsare not permitted on the wetlands trails.

ON CASE INLET … AllynNestled along the shores of Case Inlet’s North Bay onSouth Puget Sound, the charming town of Allyn is wellknown for its friendly, tranquil environment and strongcommunity spirit as evidenced by the dedicated volunteerswho power the Allyn Community Association (ACA), a501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves thecommunities of Allyn, Victor, Grapeview, South Shore,Mason, Benson and Trails End Lakes. The ACA is knownfor its ever-popular two-day event – its annual Allyn Daysand Geoduck Festival, occurring at the beautiful AllynWaterfront Park and gazebo, which is managed by the Portof Allyn. Public boat launching is available adjacent to thehistoric Allyn Pier, first built in 1922 and revamped with apump-out station and guest moorage.
On sunny days, residents enjoy an unobstructed view of14,410-foot Mt. Rainier as it looms on Allyn’s southeasthorizon. Allyn features a shopping center, post office, achainsaw carving school and wine-tasting shop, kayakrentals, two restaurants and specialty coffee houses.
The low-tide mud run is just one of the unique activities offered up during theAllyn Community Association’s Allyn Days and Geoduck Festival held at AllynWaterfront Park every July.

AT HOOD CANAL … BelfairBelfair is recognized as one of the county’s largestdesignated urban growth areas, serving as itsmain commercial center. The Boys of Summer. A familiar sight on Mason Lake, 50-year-old Jeff Purcell remains loyal to theart of slalom skiing as he has done for decades.
